Cold and Heartless

Ok, get this. I was in Honors English 10 today, and my teacher brought up an idea to adopt a homeless shelter, and we could donate clothes, nessessities, toys, and food to the people. Personally, i thought it was a good idea. Well one girl raised her hand and said that she thought that it wasn’t a good idea, because it wasn’t her business, and those people brought it upon themselves. My teacher, you could tell, was upset, and said, that she hoped that she would never get into a predicament like that, because if she did, then no one would care for her. Then she asked, who else, besides the girl, thinks its a good idea. Every single person, including me and excluding her, raised their hand.

It isn’t, and I’m ready to kill her. My teacher is a nice woman, and she raised over $2,000 for Haiti last year, so she cares about people, and for someone to say that must of hit her hard.

Yeah, that’s just stupid. And what makes this even worse for me, I saw a girl who was homeless and pregnant the other day, and that was just not right.

I think that was just a poorly executed front to hide her fear of something involving helping out homeless people. I’ve worked at clothing banks and soup kitchens before and I can say that it can be uncomfortable, especially when you recognize someone, to work there.

I can also say it is sometimes pretty depressing. Although, I understand too why you would be mad at her. Just try to understand before you judge… she may have reasons above and beyond the usual circumstances for saying that.

@happehface-This is true, there could be a reason, but I mean…do you really have to be mean about it? Especially when there is a whole other group that thinks the ideas a wonderful thing.

@Concerned*Ninja-I guess there are just people in this world that don’t care.

There are, but only until they find themselves in need of the charity they refused to render.

Concerned*Ninja September 13, 2010, 11:42 PM EST.

Comment ID #90613

Exactly. When in need, they ask for help, and guess what? No one’s gonna give it to them.

Xexla-andra September 13, 2010, 11:44 PM EST.

Comment ID #90616

Or more likely, someone will help them, and it will touch their hearts and fill them with guilt for refusing to do the same. You need to build up quite a reputation to get people to refuse to aid you.

Here’s what I believe.

If something like a natural disaster happened, or if someone burned their house down, or anything like that… Yeah, do everything you can to help them! Money, build them a new house, anything!

If however the reason that you’re homeless is because you didn’t want to go to school, or you spend all of your money on drugs or booze, and you’re making NO ATTEMPT WHAT SO EVER in changing your life around… Don’t even bother with them. They can get a job and get their own money for their own drugs or drink.

@jake, I agree. at my job I am often forced to inconvenience the majority of foodstamp-holding customers with excessive returned-item restrictions, because the greedy few refund all their groceries for cash and then go and spend taxpayer’s money on lottery, booze, cigarettes, or worse. In addition, we’ve seen increases of people attempting to return baby formula given to them by Women.Infant and Children (WIC) checks… and the money usually goes to the aforementioned addictive substances.

Our country has first, second, and third generation welfare-families: people who have kids so they can get a bigger cut of tax money for free and live off it. It’s a sickening prospect to think we should condemn the unfortunate but some people simply cannot be arsed to work for themselves, and if no one will help them, they’ll just give up on life entirely.

If you give people stuff, that’s a slippery slope to socialism. You should make them do tricks for you or they’ll never learn how not to be homeless.

I totally agree; if you are only homeless, because you choose to not work, then fine, not really my problem, but if you are homeless, because you are trying to run from a abusive husband or something else, do everything in your power to help them get money, a job, and other things. Others shouldn’t suffer for another’s actions.

They never look preggers but then you give in to the temptation to shove ‘em down a staircase and *SQUIRT* out pops the little bastard.

Next thing you know, her dad’s paid your bail and you’re nursing tequila on the beach of some place you can’t pronounce.

Hmmm quite self centered…I’m sure (in her mind anyway) that she had a reason (justified or not) for that. I wonder what drove her to that particular conclusion and why she felt the need to voice such an opinion.

@john: You mean signature?
Anyway, I can totally relate. there was a homeless man near where I used to live. I couldn’t help but to give him rides to different places he was going. I even bought him a mountain bike for when I couldn’t be there. I like to think he found a job, and hope that he did, because anywhere I could take him, he would apply for a job. I don’t know what happened, alas, but I did feel good to help where I was able :)
