I don’t see a source on that forum post, so I don’t think I can say I’m ready to believe.

i think automail was a normal prosthetic with a motor. edward would make certain movements with his existing muscles, and the automail would respond accordingly.

however, modern cybernetics is very close. i am actually studying this myself at the moment.
a small electric charge causes the remaining nerves to act accordingly, it is almost as strong and dexrous as a normal arm. (they are also developing one using lasers instead of electricity)

For the uninitiated, that full metal arm is all he has because he fucking sawed off his original with a dull fucking blade blade while his eye was being crushed by a gigantic fucking demon. He is the most badass character you will ever come across anywhere. And if THAT weren’t enough, that arm also houses a repeater crossbow and a motherfucking cannon.

I won’t talk about his sword. I don’t need to.

why would he saw off his own arm while his eye is being crushed? doesnt it seem like he would be better off using it to try and save his eye?

He was pinned down by a colossal fucking demon as his girlfriend was being raped. It was holding him by his arm first, so he sawed off his arm, and when it pinned him to the ground its claws gouged his eye out. So I kind of got the timeline wrong.

No, but that’s really what makes him cool. He has the trick arm, yeah, but the one thing that really gets him through anything is sheer strength and force of will. Let’s see Ed get stabbed through both cheeks and then BITE DOWN ON IT as leverage to fucking chop it in half while he’s being dragged through the air by a fucking demon.

And that’s just off the top of my head. You do not fight a guy named Guts, a guy who wields a swords as tall as he is (and weighs just about as much), and not expect your ass to get handed to you six ways from Sunday. He makes the Elric brothers look like emo kids. Believe it.

Guts fights, on a regular basis, things that would make Elric’s enemies shit their pants. It’s not that Elric raised the bar, his enemies just lowered it.

But don’t take my word for it. I’ve had the best of both worlds and Berserk just rules everyone’s ass off.

but eliminating pain isnt exactly hard. if we get past the pain, they both kinda expected death and fought against it, so the pain aspects arent exactly relevant to badassery, although i must admit he does seem to be more badass the E. Elric.

I read his autobiography. He was kind of impractical sometimes. He urged the Allies to non-violently resist Hitler.

Which I guess is sort of what everybody but Britain was already doing anyway.

So, automail. FMA automail is better, but Guts is more badass than the Elric brothers combined. As far as steampunk prosthetics is concerned, I guess FMA has everyone beat.

Here’s a website on posthumanity. You’ll notice a woman with two prosthetic legs jogging? I can’t tell if that’s a real picture or not, but I’ve seen at least one of those legs on someone before so the design’s feasible.

i think its not real. the arms they have are almost as strong as human ones, but i dont think legs strong enough for jogging exist yet. unless its just a normal prosthetic with a motor.

It doesn’t have a motor, it’s just a special shock-absorbing foot prosthesis. Simple design, but they HAVE synchronized motored prosthesis with spinal impulses in one test. So, yeah, we’re getting there. We have the principles down but we have yet to streamline them. But, again, look at what twenty-five years has done for computers.
