Why can't Sandy pronounce Mike's name?

Does she have an accent or something? She seems to pronounce everything else just fine, and i'm sure she's heard it pronounced before. Is "Maishul" maybe just a pet name? or does anyone have any other ideas?

Because she can pronounce it but she knows Mike thinks it's very cute so she does it just to please him.
  • #3

Hmmm... I hadn't thought of that, Meowth.

So wait Sandy have Autism O.O. Well me and Sandy have something in common then.
  • #6

So, it's a pet name? i guess that makes sense... if it was autism like Meowth said then there would be other things she couldn't pronounce as well.
  • #7

Why do you think she needed Maishul's help in English?

I'm older then him by one year. But he does help me at times and so do other people. I was born with Autsim and I used to be Very Quiet. But I don't remeber much when I was younger
  • #11

Huh. Sandy is almost a year older than Mike.....interesting.

I think I remember taeshi saying that sandy was Japanese or Asian of some denomination. she probably picked up some sort of accent off of her parents, started calling mike maishul, but has since lost the accent and just calls him it as a pet name. or I could be completely wrong.

Yes, and the end of one story is the beginning of another.

What would happen if Mike asked her say his name normally... I wonder I wonder

What point are you looking for? It's a pet name, she used to not be able to say his name, but he liked her pronunciation for it so she kept saying it that way even when she was able to say it properly, end of story as Credence said.

Actually no. Credence said it was a pet name. He failed to specify the origin, which given the topic at hand, is pretty key.

But where in the comic she first use "Maishul"?

The first time she said it she made the mistake, and then Mike asked her to keep calling him that, she is capable of pronouncing it right. Taeshi has said so in the past.

I'm Asian. I know my Asian quirks. She's Asian and saying it wrong because Asian.

Because the origin was already stated? If we're talking about the same origin I mean.

It's a pet name. It originated here. One could conceiveably mispronounce the "ch" in Michael, with a "sh" sound. Later, even though she does know how to pronounce it, it stuck. Which is why a name like Lucy can be pronounced "Loose."

The fact it's a pet name has been stated too. Yet he still felt the need to repeat it. There is also the fact he was unspecific. He attempted to dismiss the thread by saying "END OF STORY", without showing any proprietary details as to why the thread no longer served a purpose. This is an issue because there was discussion going on before he posted, and there is still discussion going on now (well DrKlaus pretty much hit the nail on the head so we'll see).

"If we're talking about the same origin I mean."

For the record, asking that implies that this topic is debatable. That alone defeats his statement.
  • #28

Well assuming people can put two and two together, what Dr Klaus said is supposed to be common knowledge. I mean they were in kindergarten where children are still learning how to pronounce words.
Also me saying "If we're talking about the same origin I mean" was more of me joking around, though I've never been good at emitting the right tone in what I type.

This however implies that to mispronounce "Michael," one would have to be able to read and have some grasp on phonics.

We're not assuming that, because we're in a thread filled with people who are debating the causes and reasoning's. And God forbid someone doesn't remember every last page.

It's not really about remembering pages really, it's a pretty memorable part of the story to be honest. Also I believe the main point of the thread was to figure out why Sandy still calls him Maishul, not why she used to call him Maishul, and we've already figured out it was a pet name so the main purpose of the thread has been fulfilled as far as I can tell.

When did Sandy ever get corrected by him though? He dismissed it immediately after in thought with himself as a "nevermind that." How could it be a pet name if it is what she initially called him when she met him?
  • #33

Are you asking how she ever learned that Micheal was the correct way to pronounce it?
  • #34

Probably learned it was the correct way when god near everyone called him the correct name.

Memorable part of the story or not, apparently, some people forgot. And here we are.

The main part has been fulfilled, it's true, but that doesn't mean this thread doesn't serve a purpose. For starters, who is to say the main topic hasn't shifted slightly? A slight shift in no way means we should just up and leave this thread and make another for each subtopic. It's like talking about aliens and making separate threads for different types (Martians, Aliens from Pluto, Aliens from Venus, Aliens from Mexico... ect.). Second of all, what about people providing some reasoning, just like DrKlaus did? Third, you say we already figured out it's a pet name. As you have seen by the other posts, there is more to it then that.

@Ace

Has Jasmine (God) ever talked to Sandy before?

Okay, I'm just saying it's not hard to figure out that sometimes young children screw up with pronunciations. And just like that boom that secondary topic is solved, also I haven't seen any other good reasons in other posts unless we want to turn this into the Japanese stereotype appreciation thread

WORD OF GOD:

There's a hubbub about this and I would like a definitive answer: In our theory, Sandy pronounces Michael's name Maishul because as a kid, she couldn't do it right, and the pet name stuck. This implies that she could read. She could also be Japanese. Hmm?

She just made the mistake a few times but Mike liked it enough to not correct her right away, but when she figured it out he thought it was so cute he told her to keep calling him that.

It's a mistake turned cute pet name yes.

I don't know why people assume that just because she can't pronounce things correctly (though she only mispronounced ONE thing, she doesn't have bad english) she's Japanese. That's painfully presumptuous.

Smiling this because too many people ask me this.

Off formspring.

Well, seeing as Sandy has been in Richter for years and Jasmine didn't know any of these people until recently, and not even Mike has seen her since years back, my answer would have to be a big fat maybe.

Nah, but seriously, why did you even have to ask, it's kind of obvious.
  • #41

I had a really bad speech impairment when I was growing up. It was horrible, for example my friend named Michele, I use to say her name like Me-sail. And you know Ash Ketchum, from Pokemon? I use call him "Ass Ketchum". Also in that realm there was a friend of mine named Ashley, well I use to call her Ass-ley.

They threw me in speech classes with similar kids with speech problems and forced me to do exercises and crap. I felt disgusted, like I had some mental disability. It was embarrassing all around.

Eventually I grew out of it, got better at pronouncing and also announcing(i tend to talk too fast) but it's still amusing to this day thinking back on it.

I always figured Sandy had something similar.
  • #42

Dr Klaus has got this, She couldn't say his name right when she was young, the name just stuck.

Just because David thinks differently does not mean that it's freudian excused as a "mental illness"

That's exactly the problem with people assuming that just because they're weird they must have some sort of aspergers of autism. Stupid.
  • #46

Agreeing with Taeshi, odd really, autism and Asperger syndrome seems to get mentioned a lot in these forums.
  • #47

Hahaha, wow, I thought the autistic thing was meant to be funny but do people seriously think Lucy has aspergers or something?
  • #48

It was meant to be funny. Obviously the characters don't have Autism.
