Why can't Sandy pronounce Mike's name?

Just because David thinks differently does not mean that it's freudian excused as a "mental illness"

That's exactly the problem with people assuming that just because they're weird they must have some sort of aspergers of autism. Stupid.

So David's not mentally deficient, just a total Muppet?

Good.

Just kidding, dammit.

By the way, there are various levels of autism, most people have some lighter ones without ever knowing it.

So she's either Japanese, it was a mis-pronunciation, or both? which is it?

I don't know why people assume that just because she can't pronounce things correctly (though she only mispronounced ONE thing, she doesn't have bad english) she's Japanese. That's painfully presumptuous.

It's cute. Also, it's probably a mispronunciation-turned-nickname.

Pronunciation is not the same as the ability to do well on assignments, though. ^_^

But that is a really interesting find.
  • #58

lol yah. That's why I didn't say anything. I just wanted to bring that to the table for people to interpret for themselves. ^_^

She sure is dumb. Hot body, Frozen mind. Michael is definietly shallow. Screw him.

This is not the first time someone has accused David of being autistic. :D

This is basically how Taeshi responded the last time.

Though I don't think being hung like a Mastodon counts as savant syndrome.

Because she is Japanese, honored sir.

She isn't stupid. look closer, both those grades are in english or reading, suggesting that she might be foreign, which supports the Japanese theory. She may or may not be good in other subjects.

Taeshi has flat-out said that she's Japanese. I think it's on the character page too. Even then, it wouldn't be out of the ordinary for someone at her age to have had a speech impediment, English being a second language aside.

But I'm fairly certain the good Doctor was just trying to elicit a reaction.

People in my elementary school class thought I was mentally unstable, but I was just different.

Some people I know still think I'm mentally unstable, But only because I prefer it that way. 8-)

It's not what Meowth said, it's Gary assuming it's the truth!

And the concept that David's "weirdness" is because of an illness which is such a peeve oh my god

I know people were joking but the kick in the pants is that people GENUINELY assume that.

Also yeah Sandy might do badly in her studies because she just struggles more, it's not some speech impediment and even if it was she's been in an English speaking courtry long enough to break from it

Because it's easier to say "autism" than "nah, he's just eccentric."

Also, I think it's a foregone conclusion that practically nothing I say regarding the comic should be taken seriously.

Of course we assume that any unusual behavior is the result of a serious mental condition. If we thought any other way the pharmaceutical business wouldn't have the US by the balls.

The highly-amusing unintentional double entendre you made. :D

You were referring to Sandy calling Mike "Maishul" / "my shul". However, in Yiddish, 'shul' means 'synagogue'. So that would mean Sandy considers Mike her temple, which is amusing in and of itself. XD

In Jewish tradition, it's forbidden to pronounce the Tetragrammaton (the name of YHWH), because it's considered too sacred for ordinary use, even in prayer. Jews get around this by referring to God by other names, such as Adonai (during prayer) and HaShem (at all other times). They may even change or add consonants to the names of God, e.g. 'Adonai' > 'Amonai', or 'Elohim' > 'Elokim'. Hence another possible interpretation is that Sandy is deliberately mispronouncing Mike's name because it's too sacred to use lightly.

Now you know. :D

Despite all this, David may still have some form of ADHD 8-D

Back into topic, I believe just about EVERYONE here is digging to deep. Wacko went way over the top his "my shul" theory, although funny lol.

The fact that Sandy DOESN'T pronounce "Michael", but "Maishul" does NOT mean that she CAN'T do so.

Since it starts HERE, in this age period she may have had pronunciation problems... then it stuck as a cute nickname.
  • #93

Yeah I was pretty sure we established it was a pet name quite a while ago.
  • #94

You know what, I'm startin' to like Wacko's explanation for Sandy's pet-name for Mike more and more :)

Well, there has been a jewish community in Japan ever since the Age of Discovery.
And China has had muslims ever since the 7th century. That would be an even more interesting theory. :D
