Characters you hate.

We've all seen them. One character. Maybe they're whiny, or obnoxious. Maybe they're stupid, or a sociopath. Maybe they're a cannon Sue, and nobody's calling him out on his horrendous and cruel actions. Whatever the case, you utterly detest them. Well, this is the topic where we share the characters we hate, Bittersweet Candy Bowl or otherwise.

There are only two that come to mind for me, right now.

Firstly, Romeo Montague. Romeo freaking Montague. A whiny brat who does nothing but angst about how boo-hoo he's so tragic."Smash, you're a hypocrite!" You say. "You liked Tidus and Shinji Ikari, and they are two of the whiniest leads out there!" Given, they are whiny, but these people have genuine reason to whine. Let's examine these three character's reasons for whining, eh?

Tidus: He was verbally abused by his father, neglected by his mother, who may or may not have committed suicide to join said abusive father, had his home attacked by a giant magic whale, apparently betrayed by his mentor whom he trusted, sent to another world where the magic whale is pretty much in charge of everything, and for all he knows, he's a thousand years away from home. Even with all the whining, he at least TRIES to be positive.

Shinji: Saw his mother seemingly die right in front of his eyes, abandoned by his father at age three, who simply walked away, back turned, while his infant son was sobbing and begging for him not to go, right before his father leaves for good he calls him worthless, he is sent to live with teacher after teacher, none of whom show him any affection of any kind, no one ever wanted to be his friend, after nearly eleven years of no contact, his father calls him up and says "Pilot this giant mech that can go berserk at any time and fight aliens trying to cause the apocalypse, oh and, you're going to feel everything the mech feels, just saying," and while he does finally makes friends, the first thing one does is punch him twice for unintentionally harming his sister in a mech fight when she SHOULD have been in a shelter, while the other one says "Don't worry about it, he just wants to feel better," has to deal with Asuka, nuff said, then he's forced to violently cripple his friend by none other than daddy dearest, tries to quit being a mech pilot - which I honestly think would have been the best thing for his health at that point - but then when he realizes he's the only one who's moderately competent at it, goes back, fights an alien, gets freaking absorbed inside his mech for over a month, he comes back, but then, all of a sudden, he's finally met someone who offers him unconditional and possibly genuine affection, but OH WAIT HE'S AN ALIEN, SON YOU GOTTA KILL HIM, even thought said alien could quite clearly resist his instinct to destroy humanity, and yeah, it's hard to forgive the whole cum on Asuka thing, BUT THEN he's freaking crucified, mentally tortured, and yes, he does cause the apocalypse, granted, BUT he also has the balls to admit he was wrong and makes so that EVERY SINGLE LIVING BEING CAN COME BACK TO LIFE, so if you CAN'T come back to life, it's your won damn fault. Whew. That's a lot psychological breaking, eh?

Romeo: He's upset cause he can't bone this chick he likes.

Seriously. He knew Juliet for less two days before he decides he has to marry her, THEN he freaking kills her cousin Tybalt, who already would have been punished for killing Mercutio. THEN commits suicide because he thinks he won't be able to do his obsession. Freaking. Impulsive. Bastard.

The second example Snow Villiers, from Final Fantasy XIII. I absolutely detest his insistence that he's a "hero" when he's lead possibly hundreds to their death - even said it was pointless for them to fight because they died IN FRONT of the son of one of his deceased soldiers - quite thoroughly believes it's okay not to have a battle strategy, because you know, HE'S A HERO so he's gonna win, no questions asked. The worst part? Even AFTER he realizes what he's done is wrong, he still insists he's a fucking hero. Er, no. No. No no no no no no NO. You're not a hero until you do something HEROIC. What heroic deeds did you do pre-game? Well... you killed bothersome wildlife. Bout it, really. Heck, even HOPE is better than he is. Yeah, Hope's a whiny bitch at the start of the game, but not only does he realize what he's doing is wrong, but he STOPS DOING IT and GROWS THE FUCK UP. In the immortal (paraphrased) words of Doug Walker "You know, just because you know what you're doing is wrong, doesn't mean it's okay to go do it anyway." Heck, he even manages to become sort of pillar of strength for his friends.

So yeah. You guys?

Technically he's also in a completely different world altogether.
That said, I can't remember him being whiny much. Apart from the beginning.

Well, not die as much as have her body turn into LCL and her soul join into a huge-ass human being.

There is only one character that I have found myself completely unable to love. She goes by the fitting name of Cruella De Vil. Honestly, she has to be the most horrid creation ever, and I am including people like Voldemort, Sauron, Draco Malfoy, The Cunning Man, Mustrum Ridcully, Jaws, anything played by Johnny Depp, Bill Nighy and Alan Rickman, Michael Kelso, Dr. Cox, Frollo, Ursula, Sid Phillips, Donkey and so on.
  • #14

Yeah, but she made an awesome villain! You just love to hate her.

That is exactly it, Smash. She is the most perfect villain ever, and she comes from a Disney film from the seventies.

With any other character, you have some sort of explanation as to how they became what they became, or they have redeeming qualities. Voldemort was raised in a horrible way and with genes that had probably been taken directly from a very self-conscious pig. Davy Jones (in the Pirates of the Caribbean iteration) was stolen away from the girl he loved, and most of his evilness is just strict and somewhat malicious adherence to rules. Michael Kelso is a complete blockhead, but he manages to accept responsibility when needed. Sid Phillips has conditions to explain his maltreatment of dolls; furthermore, he is a little boy. Frollo actually does the right thing at first - he tries to keep Quasimodo from being bullied by the crowd, and is a relatively caring person. But Cruella? She is a horrible, childish, egoistic high-class woman with cheekbones she could stab people with, who decides to kill puppies because she fancies a spotted fur coat. She badgers, complains, tries to bribe, blows putrid acrid green smoke everywhere, seems to think that she is the only person worth a penny in the world, drives a car like an absolute maniac, and generally acts like the most terrible being to ever walk the Earth. Her character is perfect for her role, of course she is, but I cannot enjoy her person in any conceivable way.

That said, I should probably try to actually inform myself about more villains before I say she is the only person I dislike. See, most of these I only know peripherally - never watched any of the Toy Story films, for instance.

I have to wonder at your list there, ILB. How in the world did Mustrum Ridcully make it? He has on many occasions been seen to be a fair and even loveable Archchancellor. And what about Willy Wonka? Johnny Depp took the role and made the character into something great. Or how about Edward Scissorhands? How can you hate him? Aside from the obvious, of course.

I hate every Left4Dead A.I player. When I'm in danger, they go stare at rocks.

I hate every AI in any shooter that has ever existed, at least the AI in Left4Dead shoot people, unlike CoD (excluding 4) AI

I exaggerated for effect, of course. ^_^

Mustrum Ridcully is more based on his early appearances; he was a bumbling, idiotic, brash and thoughtless imbecile who seemed to have no reason to be there other than be annoying. But later on, he has become a much better character, I completely agree. So no, he would not actually make the list. Perhaps the Dean would be better? ^_^

Johnny Depp's mention was more given his less personable characters, such as Captain Jack Sparrow and, oh, Sweeney Todd. Obviously, not all of his characters are intolerable - no actor ever plays only horrible people.
  • #21

Shinji Ikari. There's no way you can't hate him... I was desperate when other characters were suffering and he was unable to do anything.
  • #22

Hekatah SaDiablo, from the Black Jewels Trilogy by Anne Bishop.

Selfish, cruel and manipulative. She does not even have the power behind her to be called effective so she comes off as more as a nusiance to the story than a proper villain.

Majority of the characters in this series annoy me to an extent but not to the level she did

The women that betray Isaac Clarke in the Dead Space series. The dude is already mentally fucked up and also gets physically beaten by necromorphs, the man doesn't need some random bitch screwing him over... >:(
Luckily they get what they deserve, so alls well that ends well ;)
And I don't remember if this is the name, but there was a series called "Darker than Black". Tanya made me ill... :/
Of course theres many other characters that make me pissed, but I don't feel like recalling them all :P (I'll always love Sandvich though  )

Every Brock replacement in Pokemon. Dawn was alright, but the show sucked by the time Max and May showed up so who cares.

Bobby and Peggy mother fucking Hill. Worst characters ever created. Especially Bobby, fuck that kid so hard.
  • #28

Um depends... if you're talking about from the comic, I have nothing against all the characters. But if you're talking about different shows, I'm gonna have to go with Peggy Hill, she is so conceited that I just wanna jump right into the show and punch her.

You know Tidus isn't actually a person, right? He's a manifestation of a REAL citizen of Zanarkand, which was destroyed a thousand years before Tidus was formed from the Fayt or whatever it's called. Nothing that ever happened to him ever actually happened, it happened to the guy he proxies. Jecht isn't actually related to either Tidus or his template, Auron just knows who Tidus actually is because he was in Zanarkand before himself and Jecht were catapulted through time to serve as Braska's Guardians.
  • #30

Er... what? No, Sushi, Jecth is from Dream Zanarkand as well, and Auron is from Spira. And yes, Tidus is a creation of the Fayth, but everything that happened to him happened to him. Shuyin did NOT go on a pilgramage with Yuna, Shuyin did play Blitzball for the Besaid Aurochs, Shuyin did not fight an Aeon inside a giant magic whale.

Furthermore, Jecht IS Tidus's father. He lived in Dream Zanarkand, married Tidus's mother, and had Tidus with her. The Fayth do fuel their existence, yes, but just so long as they dream, Tidus, Jecht, and ANY denizen of Dream Zanarkand are their own people.

Next point: Auron knows Tidus because he WENT to Dream Zanarkand himself, and watched over Tidus as he grew up. He even says he rode Sin to get there in the game itself.

Also, I hate Eragon. He's a jerkass Mary Sue who can do whatever he wants because He's So Cool.

Other characters I don't like:
Neo from The Matrix
Simba from The Lion King
Jesus as predicted in The Old Testament and shown in The New Testament
Superman from several comic books, movies, TV series and cartoons.
Anakin and Luke Skywalker from the Star Wars movies.

And a bunch of other foreign, messianic characters than lead us to hope and believe in an external cure for all of mankind's problems.

If Taeshi does one more "Another Something" arc, I hope Paulo goes back in time to punch repeatedly Abbey's pregnant mother in the uterus until she finally ejects the vagina destroying parasite fetus that would have grown to be the Abbey we know. Present Abbey can just scream as he fades away before his own eyes while Augustus slams Daisy, Molly and Abbey's mom all at once. He should probably be in the room when the latter happens for hilarity's sake.
  • #44

You're a jerk, jerk. ;-;
  • #45

Yeah, that was just a touch overkill.
I always try to avoid hating characters in stories, (unless they're meant to be hated) but does anyone else just hate Sandy sometimes?
Hear me out, hear me out. I realize that she's done nothing wrong. I realize that she has problems of her own. I realize that she's actually probably quite a nice person (who I'm fairly sure wants to make a name for herself through her own hard work). And yet I can't help wanting to just STRANGLE HER sometimes. I have no idea why.
  • #46

Do you think it might have to do with the fact that she's the only person that stands between Mike and Lucy having a relationship?

Johnny, I think the new folks are too unfamiliar with your idiom. ^_^
  • #48

To be honest I'd say that I hate Daisy more than I hate sandy.

Although sandy is just a bit too sickly sweet for me, but that just might be due to Mike's storytelling.
  • #49

That's the thing, though. I know that's probably why, but I don't consider that grounds to hate somebody at all. Sandy isn't even aware of the tension she's creating between Mike and Lucy. Now, if she were being bitchy about it and setting Mike against Lucy or something, that might be reason to hate her. But right now the only thing I have against her is the position life dropped her in, and that's no reason to throttle someone.
