so, working down a list of requests carch gave me, here is a pairing knife.

  • #103

Paring knife looks great! Did you use a reference?
  • #104

Space globe!

Your 3D work is nice though it's very simplistic. Are you doing this as a hobby or are you serious about 3D? What program do you use, if you don't mind my asking? You should probably do some more research on shaders and rendering, it would really help your work stand out some more. c:

thanks charch, I used one from my kitchen as a reference.

rakshiv, I intend to peruse it seriously, but school eat's up such fantastic amounts of time that it's hard to get things done. I wish I had the time for more complicated things though. I am in the early stages of learning still, and I hope to improve the complexity over the summer when I have experience and the time to devote to it. The program I use is a free student version of 3DS max, and while new shaders and the like would be awesome, most companies assume you have loads of cash because the full non student license is 5000$. thus, Vray, one of the best shaders out there and something used in almost all projects costs around 1200$ and I just don't have that kind of cash. I would love to get some experience with it though.
  • #106

Well that's good. It's a really fun thing to get into, but by god is schooling for it ever expensive. Be absolutely sure beforehand. I still have two student loans I won't be able to pay off for a long while yet. :<

Yeah, that's what I hate the most about 3D modeling programs; They are expensive as all hell and then some. Companies assume you're a professional with money to spare and them some. Either way, though, it really is good to see you have something you want to strive towards. I don't know much about 3DS Max; I use Maya and ZBrush; but it's probably not too different.

If you ever have any problems though I'd love to help. I've been a professional 3D modeler for a while now and I'm always ready to lend a hand if you need it. c:

yeah, I love doing it, but I'm not sure If I would be able to pay for the schooling, but for now I'm having a fantastic time doing it and learning a lot, so I'm going to stick with it. I believe Maya is a Autodesk program, and 3DS is also an Autodesk program, so they are probably not very different. I've actually considered trying Maya, but I wan't to get good before I start trying to learn other modeling programs.

also, thank you! I'll be sure to drop you a quick PM if I'm ever totally confounded by something. It's really great of you to offer, and kinda nice to know I'm not the only 3D guy around here. I don't think I've ever seen your 3D, but if it's anything like the rest of the stuff in your thread, I'm sure it's fantastic. but yeah, thank you for the offer, that's really awesome!

Well I'm more a character modeler than anything. I'm not all that great with hard surfaces; I much prefer organic. Which is why I like ZBrush so much, because it lets you sculpt in 3D like if you were sculpting in clay or something. But I could help either way. My 3D stuff is here if you want to check it out: http://insanity-engi...allery/31858425

Guess you're not streaming today. :x If you stream sometime later, I'm sorry in advance for missing it. Make sure to post the results though! Because I love the pairing knife. :3
  • #110

I have to agree that the pairing knife rocks...

You've got some really nice 3d work here. Keep at it. You can learn a lot by just trying things, like you are doing.

If you are looking for software on a budget, there's always Blender. I hear it takes a lot of getting used to, but it's free. Personally, I use Carrara and Hexagon by DAZ3D for 3d animation and modeling. They're powerful tools, yet relatively inexpensive.

Can you create a model of the portal gun?

@Rakshiv, oh man, those are awesome! it looks really smooth and organic, I love them!

@Minty, I'm sorry I was unable to stream, my bio teacher gave us a massive project and I had to work on that. I'm sorry.

@Aken, Blender is probably what I would have started with, but my 3D art class introduced me to max, and I just never switched. I'll look into the ones you recommended though, they sound really cool. I do love the autodesk program for students, as I can download all of their software for free with a student account, I'm just not allowed to sell it or make a profit off of them.

@Baskey, I've actually wanted to work on a portal gun for a long time, just never got around to it. I know it would be a big project though, so I'm probably going to wait until a break or the summer before I start taking such requests, because for someone as slow as me such a project could take weeks of effort. It's on my list though, so when I have more time I will certainly give it a shot.

so, I have my second carch request rendering now. I'll post when it finishes.

alright so carch request #2!
He wanted a soda can, with some specific texturing. unfortunately I failed pretty hard on the custom texture he wanted, so I gave it a pretty simple look.

That's nice. Makes me wish I was able to do that kind of work.

As far as the texture goes, the brand ended up being changed anyway, and these are just test models.

so, attempting to make a simple logo for a friend, they wanted a simple animation of a spiral forming. this is what I came up with in about five minutes. it's pretty bad, but I'm going to post it here because what the hell.

THAT is actually kinda cool. How the focus of the image can only be seen in a reflection.

But that means in the physical plane of the image (i.e. not the reflection), the words are backwards XD

ok, update. I needed to make some car paint textures for class, so I tossed them on an untextured car I got off the internet

Those are pretty interesting. did you make the car model yourself?

I like those car textures :) shiny~!

this unit we are doing on texturing is a big one, so I refined and increased the realism of my gold/chrome textures. a small update, so I created a steel texture to add to it.

Back working on carch's requests, and his next request was a first aid kit! It's not finished, so I'll upload finished pics later when it's done. but the shape and feel of it is pretty much there!

thank you! I use a program called 3ds max to create this stuff. it's a very nice program, but expensive, if you want to try this stuff out for free you can check out blender, a free 3D modeling engine. It's really fun!

Ok, so This next dump is purely for Carcharocles, as I've gone and created a few alternate versions of what he wanted. I'll drop them in a spoiler so you guys don't take forever to load the page, but be warned before opening, there are eight or so images in here.

I actually like them all. But the red one with First Aid written around the crosses is fantastic to look at.

I can combine different components of them if you like, for example,

Quote

A red one with a straight cross and white text, text on the back but no nubs.

if you like I can make different combinations, or would you just like the one with the text-as is, without anything on the back at all?
  • #130

Try it with a straight cross. But I like the text on the back. Really, the reversed colors and First Aid text are enough to grab my attention; they seem different and stand out very well.

@charch: I've completed that kit for you with the things you wanted.

So up until now, I've been doing simplistic designs for requests and ideas, but I've grown tired of simplicity. even If I fail miserably, I want to try something more complicated. I stayed up late last night drawing a concept, and I've started on a jet that I hope I can learn a lot of new things from. here is the first render of the early stages.

Posted Image

I hope I can learn a bit about this. this is from scratch, not a tutorial, so I might not finish it if it becomes a clusterfuck. but I will try!

EDIT: Just had time to throw on a tail-section before class started, enjoy!

If you can make an editable image file of the ones you have finished, contact me via PM and I'll give you my email address.

As for the finished first aid kit, post it, I'd love to see it.

editable image file? I thought you would want the models. you can save a model render as pretty much anything under the sun, so if did you have any specific data format in mind?
  • #136

Either .svg or .3ds will be fine, actually. These are more for reference than for reference than anything else. Keep in mind that although I said "editable image file," I pretty much just meant I want to open it in gimp and look at it from all angles. I don't actually plan on editing it. XD

so charch... this is a bit awkward, but 3DS did what 3DS does and corrupted the file. luckily, I had a backup from an earlier stage, it's just gonna be a day before I can bring it up to what you want

also, Day two progress on the plane!

I see no awkward in it. You've established once before (on one of my streams) that the student version tends to corrupt itself and delete files. You've got a backup though, so less work for you.

some more work, mostly smoothing and a little bit better paint, but still very far from the final job. thought I'd update because last night, I rendered an animation of it that gives a little better perspective overall

I have no Idea why it decided to render on a black background, it was supposed to render on white >:O

Oh well, you can still get a good view of it.

Yeah, it was dumb to put up that on such a shit background, however I cleaned it up even more and added a bunch of things and gave it a much better animation now that I had the time in this, my possibly last version, depending on if you guys think I should continue it.
