I've been slacking off the AVG Free Edition for as long as I can remember, but I'm planning on acquiring a Kaspersky license some day. All that confident praise from so many people and companies makes it sound worth the money. Or does it?
Well, what nifty piece of software do you entrust with protecting your computer?

I use AVG, and for my purposes, it is perfect. I have not had a virus in... at least seven years? Since I started using it.
That is just the free version, though.

Malwarebytes. The free version allows a surprisingly thorough scan of your rig, and the full version lets you schedule automatic scans.

Malwarebytes isn't technically an antivirus. However, it can and does detect and remove viruses, and is probably one of the best software I have ever come across. I use it mostly for spyware/trojan/adware removal and as a backup to my main antivirus.
I used to use Avira but the pop-up never ceased to be annoying. Switched to Avast! which has slightly lower detection rates but is still an exceptional free antivirus.
My mom still uses Avira. We both use Comodo Internet Security as our firewalls.

Kaspersky at work, Panda at home.

Avast annoys the hell out of me because of it's little popups, and AVG is not nearly as good as it used to be in terms of defenitions.
(PS: Malware checkers are not antivirus programs. get a proper file sniffer foobs)

I use evidence and badgering to prove that the viruses are guilty.
On a serious note I use NOD 32.
