Forum Rules

Welcome to the new Bittersweet Candy Bowl forums!

After half a year using the custom forum software that integrated with the comic comments, the Bittersweet Candy Bowl community grew so big that we needed to move to something more complicated, but ultimately better for our larger readership. We hope you enjoy it!

However, with a big community comes the need for some regulation. We're not nazis around here, and this set of rules should not be read as some kind of legally binding code. We will moderate and delete and ban at our own discretion, but will generally be laid back about things.

So let us set down the RUUUURRRES!
Posted Image

UNUSUAL RULES
  • Your avatar and profile picture must be cute. Nothing ugly, nothing stupid, nothing scary and furry. Make something attractive. (This includes keeping to the 200x80px size limit, or under. No stretched ugly pictures.)
  • Only use the rich text editing functions where necessary. Do not colour the text in all your posts just to stand out and look cool.
  • General "NSFW" content is fine, straight out porn isn't. Do not link to porn sites or embed porny images. The only exception here is for fiction - which may not be posted as text on the board, but linked to on sites like Fanfiction.net or Adultfanfiction. You may post threads about these stories, but all you can do is link people to read it!
  • Posting image macros and memes is permissible in Recess, but in other forums will be heavily regulated — unfunny meme posts will be deleted. (Most are unfunny.)
  • Don't worship mods and admins. And don't be afraid, either. Anything we say or do is open to challenge.
  • Please argue and have intelligent conversations. Flaming is allowed if it's funny and the other person deserves it.

USUAL RULES
  • Post useful topic titles.
  • Don't wreck other people's topics or be unnecessarily mean.
  • Don't post inane, unfunny chatter in any thread that doesn't invite it.
  • Respect the forum structure. All art\fanfic projects must go in Creative Arts. Anything that's inane babbling or forum games must go in Recess. Anything that's somewhat interesting must go in Social Studies.
  • Don't be scared of Social Studies! It's just a way for us to separate the moronic posts from the good ones. Any comic-related ideas or questions should go here, however slight, and you should discuss politics, real life quandries and anything else here. Just think of the question "Can this topic be regarded as smalltalk?" If it can't, it belongs in Social Studies.
  • Try not to duplicate topics. If you think the topic has been made before (for example, a pairing-related topic) do a search first.

These are all very subjective rules, but please try to follow them. Essentially, you can condense them down to "be interesting and good".

ENFORCEMENT
If you are acting up, we will either post in your thread, PM you a warning or whatever. If it turns out you're still being terrible, you might be banned. In 7 months, the old forum had two bans. We don't really do it often, so you're probably gonna be okay.

If you shitpost a lot in the intelligent forums, we will move you to a member category called "Special Ed", which limits you to posting in Recess only.

Edit: These are now old and irrelevant.

I think you should be stricter in enforcing your rules. Bans needn't be permanent but can be on a timetable of, say:

Infraction -> Warning (If disregarded) -> 1 week ban

Then 2 weeks, a month and finally permanent.

I think warez and piracy should also be banned to talk about as it is illegal. Linking or embedding pornographic images/sites should also be met with heavy consequences.

I mean, if everyone thinks this is "Happy Pony Sugar Fun Time" then they won't be afraid of rule infractions, strengthened by the fact you said "We won't ban you."

A tough but fair punishment and rule set is what is needed, not leniency and leeway up the arse.
  • #2

Fransizka, I think that's going too over the top. I don't want to have any rigid system of bans, that's what power tripping internet policeman idiots tend to do. I don't think we'll do temporary bans, because a warning should suffice. If a warning doesn't result in the person behaving better, they're gone. That's how it worked with Dirt and Chazfullmetal.

Warez isn't really worth a specific policy. Maybe if it becomes an issue.

Also, this place is essentially autocratic. It's not really true that the rules here define the way you'll be treated. I could decide you're really annoying and just ban you for that reason. But generally speaking, the goal is to keep these forums good and interesting and well-kempt, and if people go along with that, there's no reason to think they'd get in trouble.

Hey suitcase, can I still keep my profile picture?(I don't mean cacutar)
  • #4

Sure. You should probably crop it, but it's okay. BCB fanart of any kind should usually be okay, unless it's really bad or unless it's fancharacter-focused. Then it crosses into creepy furry territory and you should keep it to yourself.

I should also mention that I hate avatars that aren't properly scaled to the 200x80 size, or smaller. Such things will be deleted.

Suitcase I still maintain you need to be harsher with your rules.

There are a lot of Chazfullmetals and Dirt of Boxes or whatever out there and if you make it seem like you don't care and aren't rigid then they'll take that opportunity. People need to be taught lessons and put in their places and that is that. Don't give them a reason to get in trouble.

Sure I understand the warning system but sometimes good people mess up and the whole "one warning and you don't get better perma ban" is far more of a "retarded internet policeman power trip" than anything I suggested.

Secondly, I don't think modifying the rules if something comes up is an intelligent strategy. People need to learn that torrents and shit are illegal and aren't proper to discuss in a public forum in anything, even as a joking matter. There are people like Ubertoast who work hard to make games and in the future he may be gypped out of payment because of shit like that. It's a disgrace and illegal and I think a rule to be prepared is better than being caught with your pants down.
  • #6

but it auto sizes.....
Why would you even let it do that if you didn't like it.
  • #7

I think I get what Suit is trying to say. Don't rely on the auto-stretch. If it's taller than it is wide, use the maximum height as the bounds instead of the width.

EDIT: Nevermind. I tried that and it just stretches the damn thing anyway.

This rule here seems like it could cause problems. I know at least three people who can not stand to see "cute" all the time, one of whom uses the forums. I think avatars should represent the person in some way (A picture of them, a character from a series they enjoy, a representation of themself, a character from one of their stories, stuff like that.) Some people just aren't "cute." Not liking someone's style shouldn't be a reason to deny someone an avatar. I think it could be better if it were rewritten to say something more like "must not be disturbing/pornographic."

I think avatar limitations are perfectly acceptable. I don't want to have to be exposed to gorey or furry shit unwillingly.

Which is why I said "must not be disturbing/pornographic."
What do you mean by "furry shit?" How is BCB not, in this sense, "furry shit?"

Re: cuteness

I am echoing the policy of defunct music tracker OiNK, which had in its rules: "If you choose to use one, a cute avatar is a must (preferably a stuffed animal, pet, cartoon character, etc.). If you can't find one, ask in the forums. Things that are not acceptable: your favorite band, attractive women, band/sporting/product logos, pictures of you and/or your partner. It's far better to not have an avatar than one that breaks the above rule."

That is the gist of what I'm getting at, something cute or pleasant to look at. It should not be upsetting to look at and should match the cutesy design of the site. It is a very subjective rule. If you don't understand it, you are free to not upload an avatar.

Re: furriness

I don't want your hideous fursona making out with Lucy. I don't want your terrible wolf thing in my face. It's ugly and makes me feel strange about this forum.
  • #12

I just deleted all the not-cute personal photos and avatars, and added a policy description to the pages where you upload said images. Should make it pretty clear.

I think a lot of people don't understand that a personal photo does not act as your avatar, so I've clarified that on the upload page. I don't understand why there are both, except that this dumb software wants to be Facebook or something.

  • #13

So, "Parental Advisory Pudding" is neither stupid nor ugly? Or perhaps acceptably so?
Maybe we just need to start a thread to produce acceptable avatars to get a feel for what you're asking.
  • #14

It's acceptable, though I wish it was better made. It's borderline, because of the bad text aliasing
  • #15

We have rules? In a nutshell, don't be an idiot (unless its funny or in Recess)

I think the rule about being cute is retarded. As long as the avatar is of a proper size and not one of those avatars that's been resized horribly, I think we'll be fine. That's honestly my only beef. Just make it look good. Do no JPG ditheriness, no outstretched images, no gore/porn.

It shouldn't be enforced as much because at the end of the day the avatar is meant to be a representation of the person. If the person wants to have their dumb fursona as an avatar I don't see why not.

Just make it PROPER QUALITY.
  • #22

Maybe the rule could be that the avatar must be PG-13? Or something like that, I unno just a thought, DONT HURT ME!
  • #23

*Sigh* Fine...
  • #24

Tell Soup-gun that cuteness is gay because I want a steak for my avatar.
In all seriousness, I would like to start a thread in Arts to produce custom avatars or something, except I don't know how to go about it, I don't know how to do it myself and I have nothing to trade except handjobs.

Once again, Suitcase, I am forced to bring up the rule's rigidness.

Grass made over, what fifteen posts in five minutes and half if not all of them are off topic or just random comments that do not contribute to the discussion at all to increase his post count. When addressed about it, he simply posted a "fuck you" and the stupid 'Deal With It Dog' and I can only assume his behavior will continue.

Moreover, he finds the fact I was agitated with his behavior hilarious! This is insulting on several levels.

Oh, he posted the .gif a second time.

I find it funny how you blatantly act stupid and show total disregard towards the feelings of your fellow forum users. I don't appreciate the fact you decided to shitpost in my Creativity thread and I could say the same for everyone else's topics you have soiled. Learn how to act like a normal person and stop trying to upgrade your post count.

Keep the posts on topic. Stop spamming a forum rules thread with drama. You have a PM system, use it.

--

As for Taeshi's post, I think actually keeping the two rules suitcase posted onto the actual upload pages is fine. Cute is "very" subjective, and as long as the administrating is done with a grain of salt on these images, you shouldn't have too much of an issue. It's a fine line with creating rules for those, but as long as your not overly moderating the images (aka no furry random avatars, no artistic avatars, ect) they should resolve themselves .

Mr. Pants, if you had paid attention, you would have noticed my initial post was to request disciplinary action to be taken, but it was also a reason for Suitcase to strengthen the rules and is the reason I posted it here so I could reaffirm my argument. Grass is the one that came in and started the argument and I take responsibility for not conceding to PM usage to deal with the subhuman pest.

Navi has no idea what he's talking about so I can't speak for him.

On that note I formally request another subforum to contain all drama.

I don't like ugly things and I like the rule. Even if people will flout it in places and post things that barely qualify, I think it's a nice guideline that keeps people from uploading terrible, ugly things that make me feel worse about my life so I want to leave it there.

They were in random chat, though, right? I don't have much interest in policing that forum. It's a shit forum for idiots, and unless someone's actually ruining things, they should be allowed to post. Move over to Social Studies if you don't care for the nonsense.

He did some in the Creative Forum, too. Example: Cloud's topic where he simply posted TL;DR for a story. I, personally, find that incredibly rude and dismissive of one's work.
