Hard Drive Consistency? Weird computer trouble

Sorry Suitcase if this doesn't exactly go under social studies, I just don't know what else to put it under...

So I shut down my computer just now like I do every week or so and when I booted back up it came to a screen that said something like:

Your disk drive C: name Vista 64, is being checked for consistency
you may stop this at anytime, but it is strongly recommended
that you not.

after about 5 minutes and several new, "stages" it finally said that it was all done and proceeded to restart my computer
and everything was fine.

now I know that disk drive C: means my Hard drive but I don't understand what it means by checking hard drive consistency? can anyone help?
and if it matters I'm running Windows 7 home premium

thanks guys

The windows file system noticed something irregular with the disk, and was running a "CHKDISK" or checkdisk before booting into windows to ensure that the hard drive was functioning properly.

How exactly do you boot down your system normally. It can possibly be a factor, although there are a variety of things that can cause windows to want to do a checkdisk.

Long and short of it, it's something that's not going to harm the disk and it will repair inconsistancies.

And pants it's probably because my comp crashed 2 times this week though now everything seems to be in order again!

Again thanx, and sorry this isn't that fun of a topic, I was just curious
