Harry Potter

So I just saw the final Harry Potter film (it was great by the way) and I cannot believe that the media sensation has finally come to a close, I first picked up a copy of the original book in 1998 at a school book fair, and since then I have been completely with the series. This was the major media franchise of our generation. What are your thoughts on the series as a whole, good bad, how do you feel now that it's over...discuss

(yeah we all knew this topic was comming)

I watched it, and some of the stuff in the last movie was terrible (RonXHermione in the chamber or when harry falls off the castle with voldemort). Overall it was a great expirience though. They should have done more effects with 3D.
  • #2

Harry Potter is Satanic bullshit and you shouldn't be reading/watching it.
  • #3

my family has been obsessed with it but its always just been another book to me (^ lol what?)

In all seriousness though, I never quite got into the series. I mean, I really liked the first movie because it introduced the audience to Harry's universe, but after that I just sorta didn't care. Maybe I'll give the movies another chance sometime in the future when I have the time.

And I don't care what kind of hero they are, they're an enemy of God.

I never thought the religious right would so directly admit to why they're so terribly flawed. I suppose recognizing their mistakes is the first step to fixing them, so that's good.

Also, I hardly ever use the dark magic I learned from Harry Potter. Everybody knows that only the weakest magics can be written down in books. The good stuff you need to be taught directly, generally by playing D&D.

Not gonna lie, I lol'd. Hurreh pottuh is da devil.

And yeah, so what if he's protecting all the people of the world from the worlds darkest wizard? He's evil! These 4000 year old books that have possibly been tampered with over all this time says so!

Anyone else find it hilarious that their sins are being washed away with bottled water?

On topic:
I feel like three things:
1) The series has been overwith for a while now, because there are books. You acknowledge this, but others don't, so I decided to mention it.
2) I feel that there was a distinct lack of erotic scenes.
3) I feel like a human being (how else am I supposed to feel?).

I for one am glad that they didn't fuck up the films. I expected them to throw them together as yet another WB cash cow, but in reality they were very enjoyable.

Man I remember seeing a poster of it in 7th grade and my teacher recommending it as a new thing that is very good.

It just totally exploded in fame, I was never into it but I totally appreciate it and feel happy for the writer getting so far.
  • #18

I care little for this series but still I read so meh what're you gonna do
  • #19

Read every book at least twice, seen every movie.

Is a good series, the books will always outstrip the movies by far in my mind though.
  • #20

It's weird how I was in about 2nd grade when the first or second book came out... I just got the last one last week (granted it's been out for over a year); I'm a 19 year old college sophomore...

Also have no urge to read the damn thing, I'm on page 3. I need gas money anyways, time to return it.

Harry Potter is a Gary Stu on a never ending search for The Next MacGuffin. Yawn.

I just saw the last film myself. It was very well carried out, though left out some things in the book I'd have preferred to see. Overall it's nice to see this come to an end, and a fine ending at that. I couldn't stand Harry Potter when I first heard of it, but once I saw the first movie I was intrigued. I read the books, and quite enjoyed the middle ones, though never did enjoy the final. The ending killed it for me personally, I think a much better and emotionally stirring ending would have been found in a bittersweet, Harry saves the world but actually dies for it. That's my personal belief though.

Like I said, overall a fantastically well-down film. It was the last loose-end of many a childhood of a generation, I know many of my friends have enjoyed this series since we were starting to learn more then 1+1. They could have tried to pull the emotion in some of the moments a little better, really pulled at the heartstrings of viewers when surveying the dead. They did well in trying however when delving into the memories of Snape, that I found to be one of my more favourite moments of the film.

That's how the Matrix Trilogy ended, Rook.

Are you saying the moviemakers should've completely ignored the books?

Well, to be frank that could've been a good idea. A remake / alternate version instead of adaptation of the books. Sort of like HHGTTG (Every version from several radio versions, the book series, tv series, movie... are different) or Evangelion (Manga version has loads of amusing stuff not found in the anime and then there's the whole deal of Rebuild)
  • #27

Saw the midnight screening, it was the best! I thought the movie followed the book reasonably well, without going overboard. Some were complaining that the timing of the scenes was messed up, but personally, I am just happy to see a fantastic series come to a good end.
  • #28

Just seen the film... Aaaaaaaa 8-D

Overall, it was a good film. Obviously they couldn't fit all of it in, it was running at 130 minutes anyway. I feel it was certaintly the best way to end the series after its long and successful run. J.K Rowling must be set for life if she wasn't already.

TL;DR SNAPE X LILY MOMENTS WERE AWESOME. PAGE 552 OF THE LAST BOOK. (In my copy anyhow)

Watched the movies till movie 4 then I started reading the books all the way to boook 7 and have now watched every single movie 8-O

GARRR! I wanted to start this thread right after the midnight showing but I zonked. Ah well.

Anyways!
Book Series: Awesome! J.K. can write like no other! I loved everything from the books: the adventures it took me on as a child, the hope and wonder of "What if it's real? I'm 12! WHERE'S HAGRID?!?!", the feeling that I was a close friend to everyone in the books, and all the extras it came with after it became a cultural trope like the tests of what house you would be in, dressing up while going and buying the newest books the days they came out, and then of course the movies!
Movie Series: I was blown away when the first movie came out after the 4th book came out. Granted I was still young and so didn't have a great taste in movies but still, as my memory serves, it was great! As the series progressed I was increasingly more satisfied with the series since it was generally keeping to the books well (again as my memory serves). Really the first time that I was slightly disappointed with any of the movies was during the last "book", both pt. 1 and 2. I'm won't go into detail because it's been a really really long time since I've read any of the books and so I'm not in much of a position to get cranky.
That being said the overall feeling of the whole trope is "FUCKING AWESOME!!" That's just my bit. If you haven't given the books a chance I would highly suggest it, especially if you're a younger person. If you don't like it just return it, just give it a try (as if my influence would really mean anything :P oh well.)

As a final note "GO RAVENCLAW!" XD

A couple of years back I was like a die hard Potter fan, I still remember how my friends and I would pretend to be witches and wizards, but it has cooled down a bit. I still really like the books and they were the reason I started reading fantasy.
My mom actually read the first and the second books out loud since I couldn't read at that time, and then my mom got book three and I read that one all by myself. So, Harry Potter has always been a great part of my childhood.
I was never really fanatic about the movies, I watched them, because that's what you do, and the the ten-year old me scolded people for not reading the books and only watch the movies ;)
Anyway, I really liked the seventh movie, even though it left out a bit and changed some things - it worked :)

I have not yet seen the last bit, but from what I have seen of part one, there are several disappointing aspects - such as very much important subplots being left out, and other edits being made that whisked away characterisation and the reasons for their actions. Although, of course, putting all of them in would likely have pulled the whole thing out into four parts. The additions (such as the Harry and Hermione dance, for instance) were quite well pulled off, though, so I cannot complain about that even though I am saddened that they may have taken away time from some things I felt were vital parts of the book.

Among the things that I wished were not so in the first part:
Spoiler

Still, it was a... Laudable effort. They left out many pieces that had great importance, but the main story holds its ground in the middle, which is - after all - the vital thing. I have to watch the last one, and see if anything happens there to change my mind.

I'm not saying that at all. I'm saying JK Rowling wrote a bad ending in my opinion. At least this was a book to movie adaptation that followed true to the book in most cases, yes. I was starting the end of the series itself, both book and movie could have had far more impact if written in this alternate manner.

Movies are so mainstream.

On a more serious note, I will have to watch the last movie someday. Hope it will be as accurate as the first 4 movies.
Also, books are awesome. (I guess I'm a bookworm. Give me a book I like -> I can give it back to you tommorow if it's under 1600 pages.)

I actually think the ending Harry Potter already has was the best there could possibly be. As in, I really do not mind him surviving because every single thing built up to that ending. His character, the events that occurred, the information that was gathered to create conclusions only in the very end, all of that said that it would work. While I am not against a bittersweet ending, the one that came about here worked out perfectly well - besides, there are already a whole lot of stories that end with a lot of loss, and have tragic heroes. ^_^

The thing is, many of the children who are the core fans of the Harry Potter series have since grown up. The books each became darker and darker as time went on, I don't believe the final is a novel for the same 8 year old child the first is. I see writing as a way to make people feel, and what better way to tug heart-strings then to make this figure we've seen and watched grow as many readers grew along with him make a sacrifice he was not immediately redeemed from? Watch this boy make a sacrifice and pay a legitimate toll for it. Yeah sure, others died but it doesn't hit home as much as it would if the person you've watched for over a decade lose it all and save the day? This is my personal belief though. An ending with an impact that leaves a mark emotionally with the reader is better then one they can say "Oh, that was good!" then pick up the next. You know this character died, and died for what they wanted and what they believed in. This makes their struggles seem to have so much more impact then they get the happy ending. You want to stop them, save them, and it will leave a lasting mark on you as a result which I believe an author should strive for, touching the emotions of the readers.

And besides, I know I'm not the only one that read (Not watched in the movie, but read in the book) that 19 years later crap and felt it was a badly written Fanfic.

No, Sil. You miss the point. In both book and film, Hedwig was pretty much tossed aside in the same vein as Moody was. However, Hedwig didn't get her eye stuck in a door to become a plot point. I'm just saying, we had to put up with that redundant fucking bird for six fucking stories. IF you're going to kill it, have her guts explode across Potty Wee Pothead's glasses.

I read all the books, and enjoyed them (especially the 7th). However, I have never been a fanatic about the series. I didn't go to any midnight releases, and the only movie I've seen end-to-end is Goblet of Fire.
One thing that just kept bugging me though: Why the hell didn't someone just shoot Voldemort? I mean, it's not as if magic is bulletproof, (unless it is, in which case, I stand corrected), so why doesn't someone just end him with a high-powered rifle? (Repeat as necessary until he runs out of horcruxes.)
