Guess This Point in History

@Car
You got it right and I didn't know that was you who posted your desktop with this event.
  • #101

Yup. An altered picture taken at the time, colored to be creepier.

That is the volcano that suddenly rose out of the ground in the middle of some Chilean's farm. Pancutin, it is named.

Also, this happened, I believe, in the forties.
  • #103

ILB is correct :D

Funny thing, this particular picture was taken while it was forming. It's really not that far away. However, there was nothing there less than two weeks before this picture was taken.

That is quite amusing. Except for for the poor farmer. ^_^

Also, I am going to be evil now. The bottom of the picture provides a hint, though.

No, that is not it. That happened already in 1941.
  • #107

Nazi scorched earth plan?

God, I should know this. ;_;

This happened on the same day as Hitler's birthday party in the Fuhrerbunker...

Siege of the Fortress Breslau?

Got it. Death of Elmer Gedeon.

Actually, no. This happened somewhere else entirely. And it was quite the blast.

I could add that a ship under German control was involved.
  • #109

I'm takking a shot in the dark, Voorbode Explosion, or an explosion that happened on Voorbode (I don't think Voorbode Explosion is the right name for the event)
  • #110

Siege of stalingrad?

Didn't see the date

I was gonna say Krystallnacht, but then I saw the date...

Uh...bombing of Dresden?

D. is actually correct; it is the ship ST Voorboode, which exploded in the middle of the harbour of Bergen, Norway, on the 20th of July, 1944. It was carrying ammunition, and copious amounts of it, and suddenly ignited - causing a very great explosion that flattened or ravaged large amounts of the city.

I'm giving my turn to wacko, but if he doesn't reply for a while anyone can take it.

That looks like a civil war picture. It's kinda fuzzy, but is it Gettysburg? (I live near there, and I've been there, it looks vaguely familiar, maybe from a museum)

I'll just give it to you anyway Rey, the answer I was looking for was the Harvest of Death though.

That has to be a pole expedition... Could it be Roald Amundsen, at the South Pole (1910-1912)?

Actually, looking at the flag again, that seems highly unlikely. Still, my guess stands, just for the purposes of being there.

We need suggestions, folks ^_^

Since you pointed out the flag... I would guess the Peary Arctic expedition of 1909.
  • #140

It's actually a Polar expedition, the North Pole to be exact.
