If you have the cash or low Morality get Photoshop CS4. Best thing ever made but it's very difficult to learn and master. You might need courses for that.

GIMP is the next best alternative. It has most of Photoshop's functions and takes less space both on hard drive and RAM. It's also much easier to learn and master but some things that would take a minute in Photoshop would require up to five minutes in GIMP.

PAINT NET is something a lot of people like but in my opinion it's just a trial version of GIMP.

Everything else is either trash or a cheap knock off of these three.

Edit : Hmm I wonder what Taeshi uses for BCB.

I used Paint Shop Pro when I was like, 10 years old and it was 1997, but since then I've come to rely on a combination of Photoshop and Fireworks. I can't stand the GIMP and its shitty confused interface, all of the fancy Core Image powered Mac image editors are underpowered and unambitious, and um I don't know what else there is.

I would recommend getting started on Photoshop and perhaps Fireworks (if you are planning to do design work as well). However, these are image manipulation programs. You might find some interest in stuff like Painter, ArtRage, Manga Studio etc if you want something focused on artwork.

Veronica gets by with Oekaki and Photoshop these days.

Get corelDraw graphics suite.(photopaint is the picture editing sofeware, but there's more. Much more) I use 12 but I think their latest version is X3? I've tried both paint shop (X2) and PhotoPaint, and PhotoPaint is the clear winner. Not only is it better editing software, it comes with a drawing program, and other stuff. (but i'm too lazy to check what they are and what they do.) The trade-off? Price. last I checked it was 799$ to buy and register corelDraw Graphics suit 12. (I haven't gotten a price but I'm sure the newer one would be more expensive)

Other notes:
Gimp:Blows no two ways about it.
PhotoshopCS4: confused the hell out of me. (bear in mind i only fucked around with it for about 15 minutes once in gr.10)

I use MSPaint, myself. Then again, all I do with it is create puffy and ugly flowers. ^_^

I use photoshop mostly for computer drawing, though I will use GIMP sometimes. I'll use MS Paint for simple, doodly stuff.

I tried my hand at SAI once at a friend's house and fell in love with it. Unfortunately, I do not have the money to buy it. However, lucky for me, my friend said that he'll let me use his access code for it the next time I visit him~ :D

I go back and forth between Photoshop and MS Paint.
Have never used Gimp in my life.
Would like to check out SAI but I'm also content with not? Haha, plus I have no means of getting it.

This is the internet, there is always some way of getting what you want, albeit some methods are a bit unsavory.

ONTOPIC: Photoshop and paint.net. Gimps a bit of a pain to use, but can do the same things photoshop can.

Open Canvas and Sai are two free ones that I find pretty good. If you're into oekaki, you can always go with PaintBBS, Shipainter/Shipainter pro, and the most recent applet is Chibi Paint. I don't have much experience with Chibi Paint though but from what I hear it's pretty good, too.

I used to use Paintshop Pro, but I've moved on to Photoshop CS 4. Illustrator is great if you want to vector/design and things like that. Photoshop isn't too difficult, depending on what you want to do.. if drawing/coloring is what you want, be sure to at least be familiar with layering. For coloring/shading styles, refining your line work, etc, there are a bunch of tutorials out there that I'm sure you'll find if you search.

Paint Tool Sai: Paint tool SAI in English
Open Canvas: openCanvas 1.1 - English version
Oekaki: Join any oekaki board to draw, since the applets are within the browsers to use.
