What country name sounds the most made up to you? Ruritania, anybody?
What modern country name sounds the most fictional or even ridiculous to your ear?
Now, even though it's even less recognized then Kosovo, I'd personally have to go with Transnistria, 'cuz, ya know, Transylvania makes it sound like a parody and you don't hear about the river Dniestr all that often.
What about you peeps? What's your Thatsoundssofakeistan?

Oh? Well... I must say that Tajikistan sounds rather silly to my ears. That said, Belarus also brings to mind a jokester - we call it "White Russia" over here, which - admittedly - is just as silly.
There is also French Guyana, and... Quite a few small countries that I do not remember the names of, but that sound quite silly either way. Such as Christiania in Denmark.

I'd have to say Chad. Seriously, how unimaginative do you have to be to name your country Chad?

Chad? Seriously? Where is it located, South of the country Bill?
I think I'll have to go with Chad.

Oh? Oh yes, it sounds rather silly in English. Originally, though, it has quite a different meaning.
It is in Africa, by the way. Western Africa, unless I am mistaken.

That actually sounds real, because no person in their right mind would just make up a name like that. Truth is stranger than fiction. ^_^
Hee. Yes, that also has quite the potential for jokes.

Oh, come on. America has a state named Washington, a president named Washington and a capitol named Washington D.C. ^_^
Mexico - Mexico City (which is strangely less imaginative), Guatemala - Guatemala City, and so on.

Not to mention how many different places start with "new"
Back on topic I'd have to say Chad, but the name is immensily more amusing to me than most people for reasons I will not outline.

Arizona, Michigan, California, The Cayman Islands, and Norway all have towns named Hell.
These are all either fake or were all founded by the Antichrist and will be instrumental locations in The Rapture.

Well, Hell means something like "tilt" if you translate it from Norwegian. Calling the Norwegian Hell a "town" is a stretch, by the way - it is an extension of the airport next to it and a village at best. ^_^

@ ILB - Ahh, I knew you would be able to clarify that. All Norwegians apparently know everything about every place in Norway. Or do you live closeby?

No, I have just been to that airport nearby rather too many times. I live somewhere else, but there were a few summers when I went in and out of there. That said, the hotel they have (Rica Hell Hotel) must be booming with the tourists, so the place might be expanded. But no, still not town size. ^_^
