Chortle's Art Thread

Think you could benefit from some online learnin'? I'm nothing close to masterful, and mostly self taught, but you might pick up a few things.
  • #51

Bourbon: Very truw... I'll o some research :)

Here's a little practice on hatching/shading with a ballpoint pen.

Posted Image
  • #52

That's actually pretty ballin'. Looks like something you'd see in book illustrations. I'm impressed :D

Have you ever tried stippling? It's a really fun technique.
  • #53

I like it, your work is all so cheerful. In particular this one is great.
Spoiler

  • #54

Thanks, Bourbon and matty! No, I've never tried stippling... It's sorta like hatching or cross hatching but with dots?
  • #55

Haha, yeah, stippling is just tons and tons of dots in various sizes/spacing/layers to get volume. It's time consuming (unless you do what I do, rubber band 4 pens together and hope for the best), but you can get cool effects out of it.

Here, I pulled up an old drawing I did on the back of an astronomy test. It has a couple different pen and ink techniques on it, so you can see the various effects you get. Sometimes changing up the style is useful for keeping things from blending into each other too much

Posted Image

Ew, I can't draw mechanical stuff for shit.
  • #56

WOAH THAT LOOKS AWESOME! Thanks :D

And here are some more arts:

Some random grayscale stuff... I was bored in math :P

This is an image I colored for a Copic contest, but Facebook keeps rejecting my photo! D:

  • #57

Nice, your coloring is hardcore stuff. I wish I had copics...

Gotta ask, what is that fuzzy guy?
  • #58

Thanks! I bought all of the Copics myself, but now I feel sorta guilty cause I have a lot and 'm not even that good at art.

The fuzzy guy is just... a random fuzzy guy. I was just a doodle.
  • #59

This sis totally random, but here's a duct tape bag I made 8-D

Posted Image
  • #60

Hah, nice! I like when people try different things.
  • #61

Cool bag, though the three colors make it look kind of busy. Then again I'm a bit of a minimalist when it comes to fashion XD

Do you sew as well?
  • #62

Thanks! I do agree, Bourban, but it's sorta hard to find duck tape in subtle colors. :P No, I don't sew (well, I can sew by hand and I know a little bit of how to work a machine, but not anything complicated). I wish I could, though! Although I'm not that into fashion, it would be cool to be able to make my own clothes and stuff because I hate how all the clothes for teenagers have obnoxious logos on them (like they all say Aero or Abercrombie and Fitchhuge), so it's hard for me to find shirts that I like. :(

You know how to sew? Any tips for beginners?

Sorry I was rambling D:

You have such a fun style~! I really love your copic work, man I woulda killed to be as talented as you at your age!
  • #64

Yeah, her coloring is boss, and she's already pretty good at illustration too. Lucky talented kid is lucky >:I

I can't say I know how to use a machine, I only hand stitch, but I've made things before. A lot of pillows and plushies and the like, and some costumes. How about you give me an idea of something you'd wanna try, and I'll give you tips on doing it? XD

I totally agree about the logo thing, by the way. I'm a big guy, it's hard to find just regular shirts that I like (they're all either ghetto-fab or some kind of wolves or skulls or other tacky things like that)

I don't mean to be a weird fangirl or anything, but Taeshi, when I saw that you commented I nearly had a heart attack I was so nervous about what you were gonna say. Thanks so much it means the world to me! Thanks to Bourbon, too!!!! 8-D

About the sewing thing, I know this sounds obscure, but I want to make little animal golf club covers... My dad is turning 50 and he just bought some clubs and got into golfing.

Oh, and here's a [really badly] colored comic starring [demented] BCB characters! :D

  • #66

It's wonderful! They look awesome in that style! Especially Lucy and Flower Girl ~
Just one thing: you spelled "Mike" wrong; It's written "Make" in the first panel XD

That's such a great comic hahahahaha <3
  • #69

Thanks! Oh wow I just realized that I spelled it wrong... FAIL. Lol I will fix that later today.
  • #70

HAHA that comic is super adorable and true~ I am so jealous of your freaking awesome Copic and drawing abilities XD
P.S DRAW MORE BCB STUFF IT LOOKS SO COOL :D And don't you ever stop drawing, or I'll have to slap/talk some sense into you at school! :P

Yay I fixed my fail typo (or would you call it a write-o if you wrote it?), did a little more shading, and got the comic scanned! :)

Posted Image

Thanks, Lauren! I'm looking forward to when you get Copics this Christmas! I'm really excited to see what you do with them XD. I do not look forward to being slapped anytime in the near future. :/

Lol you are very obsessed with BCB fan art... I'll draw more whenever I get a good idea :P

I'm back with some more art! :D Mostly just quick sketches, though.

Here's the finished version.

Lucy... She looks like a deranged mouse. Sigh.... :(

Posted Image

Some other random doodles.

Posted Image

Posted Image

And you know those contests I entered before (like with the manga-y people)? Yeah I didn't win anything... not even honorable mention :( Ah well. Thanks for liking my entry on Facebook if you did! Like 500 people entered, so it wasn't very likely for me to win anyway. I'm trying to find more contests now :)
  • #73

Awwwww I'm so sad you didn't win! ;_;
Those doodles are super cute though! I like the sunflowers. They're pretty. :D
  • #74

Thanks! :D

I haven't put up any art here for a while. I've been busy... with life and stuff. Anyway, here's some more art XD

A random comic for my webcomic.

That meme with characters from my comic, Adam and Megan. It's sorta confusing if you haven't read the comic.
I hate digital... SO MUCH.

This is a bag I made for my friend's birthday. It's made out of plastic bags ironed together. 8-D

I'm working on a 10 page comic (that I started in a summer camp), and I finished inking, but then I realized that I had literally no solid blacks, so now I'm going back and filling in a lot of black spaces... But I'm not really sure how much should be black- like should it be 50/50 between black and white? Or should there be more white? Also, my filled in black areas look really splotchy and they take forever to fill in... Tips, anyone? Thanks so much :D
  • #76

What are you using for the blacks? NEVER USE SHARPIES UNLESS YOU DON'T PLAN ON ANYONE SEEING IT. Sharpies don't always fill well and bleed and over time turn all purply. You wanna use ink pens, or even bottled inks. Also, the amount of shadow depends on the feel of the comic and the lighting. Typically leave more white than black, but have the two contrast each other. Close up of a light face --> darker backdrop. Black silhouette --> surround with light areas. Basic stuff like that, you've probably figured it out for yourself already.

Got any example pages?
  • #77

Ugh, I couldn't stand the smell of that much Shapie! I'm using a Faber Castell brush pen. I've started on the first page, but Im only like 1/4 done. I'll try to finish it up soon, though. Thanks :)
  • #78

I love my Faber Castells, but for large areas you may wanna use a brush and ink, or at least find a black chisel tipped copic/prismacolor marker. No need to waste your brush pen ink.
  • #79

Ok, although I'm using one that I wasn't really using regularly anyway because the tip is all flattened and messed up. I have a black Prismacolor... but aren't prismacolors more expensive than Faber Castell pens?

Oh man I love your comic with the old woman, it's such a cute and silly idea, and I am absolutely digging the way you ink, like how you seem to just brush over some things and leave some areas uninked, but it doesn't detract from the drawing.

Also I'm gonna post your BCB comic onto Candybooru, hope you don't mind! I'm just a completist and I think the comic deserves a lot more attention.

ALSO BY THE WAY, you say you have a webcomic.. do you have the link? ;___; I'm sorry if you have already linked to it before, I just don't recall ever seeing it. Sorry.

^_^
  • #82

Thanks so much, Taeshi! :D For you compliments and putting my comic on Candybooru! I haven't used Candybooru before, so I wasn't really sure if I should put my comic on... But yeah thanks!

And thanks for posting the link akacatgirl! When you click on it, you will be entranced by a whole new realm of bad comics and crappy titles :P Just kidding, some of the recent stuff is pretty good, but the old work is REALLY BAD D: Also, you'll find that basically the only people who read and comment are my friends.

So now for more art!

This is the card I made for my friend's birthday! I was cheap and didn't color the entire disco ball light background, which I regret :(

Posted Image
And here's the first page (in progress) of my 10 page comic! I filled in some blacks, but I wanted to ask you guys' opinions on some stuff... Like should I make the background in the second panel black? Or color the table black so the last panel won't be so white? And also should I color black in the second to last panel straight to the character's face and not leave the white border? Any other comments... and stuff?
  • #83

That is truly amazing. I think, for contrast, you should colour the background in Panel 2; the frame around stage looks a bit artificial otherwise.
  • #84

Oh my god.
That is really impressive.
  • #85

This is real good art. This takes a lot of talent
  • #86

Thanks so much! I will definitely color in the background in panel 2, thanks Sammy! I think I'll also fill in the table (or at least do like a woody pattern on it) because the lack of contrast in the last panel annoys me...

And now to work on the other 9 pages! I'll post the whole thing once it's finished and maybe some more pages in progress- don't wanna give away too much of the story! :smirk:

I'm thinking of getting a live stream like akacatgirl... Would any of you guys watch it?

I'd say only get a LiveStream if you're willing to put time into it. Also, you would have to download "Procaster" along with it if you want to stream from your destop. Just a tip. ;)
P.S If you do get one, please post if you're streaming live. I wanna watch! :D

Thanks! Hm now I'm not sure. I was actually thinking that I could also do it with a webcam for traditional art..? The only problem is- I don't have a webcam (except the one on the top of my computer)

Thanks! Sorry there's such a large gap between posts... I'm a slow worker. Also, I was going to post pictures of some shoes that I painted, but then I wore them and some of the paint chipped off so I had to repaint them and spray them with some clear protective stuff. Anyway, here are some pictures now. :D

I also made this comic (Okay, more like an illustrated story)... which is pretty self-explanitory. I thought it was a good story.

Still working on that 10-page comic...

I'm back with another comic! I decided that I should do some more stuff with my markers, so this is how it turned out.

This is like the best line for Alice in Wonderland. Ever.

Although now that I think about it, it could kinda sound perverted... :nope:
