Star Captain Rick (Back from unofficial hiatus?)(Nope It's rebooted elsewhere)

OOOOOkaaay. Hi there everybody! I go by the name of ThatGuy, I guess you can call me TG for short. I made this comic during my junior year in high school (going on to senior year). Most of it is notebook paper sorry D: but everyone who's seen my comic in other forums likes them. Please feel free to give me any art tips you have (Especially Taeshi if she ever sees this). Fair warning since I am a high school senior my comic is a mix of jokes that are highly inappropriate. I hope you still enjoy it. Anyways without further ado, Star Captain Rick:

o__ o

I see I have some views but no comments D: Oh well. I'm sure someone will get around to it.
  • #2

Don't expect comments to come so quickly. These are quite amusing and the progress in your drawing style is rather clear. Nothing else I can think of to say besides keep improving and try to add some coloring to your art as well.
  • #3

Oh thanks, I didn't have any good editing tools at the time and all the ones in notebook paper were in class. But yeah I think I've made good progress. And my friend is getting my Paint tool SAI. I hear it's a pretty good tool.

@ the first comic

Why did you draw Riker?

Wait, elaborate on that because I can't see how Riker is in the first comic at all  Rick isn't Riker if that's what you meant since Rick is different in many ways, he doesn't even have a beard.
  • #6

Holy Crud I hit a 100 views 8-D Sorry but to me that's sort of an achievement.

I was making the joke that Riker has "relations" with tons of aliens on the show.

Thaaat's what I missed. Sorry things blow over my head sometimes XD

Oh, and I'm starting to use the Paint Tool Sai. So future comics may be in color this time. Or at least inked.

Hey cool comics.
Did you write them all out at the same time, or just plan them as you drew them?

I must note, the way you draw pants make them all look like they have erections all the time.
Or maybe they do? :P

Honestly it's like a minute or two of planning out the starting joke and then I make it up as I go.
As for the erection thing that's supposed to be the little cover over their zipper XD but I honestly thought it looked like that too sometimes. Hey thank God I didn't have the girl wear pants right?

*checks strips again*
Oh, right. I thought you meant underpants, because they're a type of pants too, and well... yeah.

But really, I've got like 25-30 strips I haven't drawn yet, just written out. Parodies are the easiest thing ever to write, or situational humour.

There's some truth in that XD but still I always try to put some effort in what I do with this comic

Maybe you should call it "Battle-Star Wars Gate : Revenge of the Atlantis Firefly, The New Generation".

  • Borg Lord

You forgot Andromeda. And Farscape comes to mind too, though I've never actually watched it.
  • #15

Well I haven't seen those shows, and didn't even know they existed. If you'll excuse me, I must foray into Wikipedia's archives.
  • #16

I think Star Captain Rick is an okay title for now XD because come on guys. It's all about Rick.

And we are back. 8-D
  • #18

Quick fyi, I'll post the image of each new comic from here on out but I'll also put the direct link in the first post....Until the first post gets way too long D: but either way, now ya know.
  • #19

Mind if I redrew some of these? I bet it'd be fun :D
  • #20

Well, can't say I see the problem in that Bourbon. You're free to go ahead and take your pick of them. I'd like to see what other artists can remake of my work. I know my traditional art can bother most people. I'm trying to improve when I ink it in Paint Tool Sai but I don't have a tablet D: so feel free to show me any renditions. Besides the fact alone that you would want to must mean that the comic is earning some merit XD
  • #21

It's got its genuinely funny moments, and I like the simple but still pretty expressive drawing. It's obviously not professional, but hey, look at Cyanide and Happiness, Just try to avoid more cliches and keep the dialogue loose and you have a good comic going XD

I'm gonna try a couple different styles, you can tell me what you think.
  • #22

8-D Your words, it's like they created a wellspring of glee in my chest. Hearing a compliment like that from such a great artist is really cool. And yeah, I would hardly call myself professional XD I still have my senior year to clear before I'm a college man. Maybe when I get a tablet and more free time to draw I could think about a webcomic. But other than that I really can't wait to see what you turn out 8-D

And I've already heard all the wisecracks about my underdressed villainess from my friends so save it.

Hey, like the art direction, and everyone likes some gratuitous titties every now and again. Thought that, since you're getting better in strides, you might want a little lesson.

I'm tired, so I'm only gonna look at the one last action from, with Rick and Bobba Fett there. The action is flat and stale, you want it to be like "POW YOU GOT KNOCKED THE FUCK OUT" instead of 'I boop u now...boop'. So onto dynamic posing!

Start with action lines. How do you want the characters moving, what's the force, what's the direction, stuff like that. Here I've done a very small thumbnail sketch of the punch and block actions from a more interesting angle. I kept the action lines as 'arrows' in pencil, see how they all follow something? The arc of the punch, of the bodies, of the forces acting on each figure. The figures are built around these action lines, I outlined them in pen for easier viewing.

Posted Image

Now that we have a decent pose going, copy the skeletons into a bigger area and start fleshing out your figure with 3-D shapes in mind. I don't usually do the boxes and spheres thing so forgive me if it looks like reheated turd, but they really help. Imagine your character is a robot made of weird boxes and wedge shapes, so you can better see it as a form with depth.

Posted Image

Okay, now Cross looks like he's a people! Notice how the torso is deformed and not a straight rigid shape. This makes it look like his torso is shorter than it is, and his legs are higher up. Don't worry about stuff like this, body's contort all the time, it's natural. Also notice how I'm not worrying at all about the right leg and left fist. Most of that area will be covered by our old pal Rick, and not detailing distant parts like the leg add an illusion of depth while also allowing you to be lazy as hell.

Posted Image

It's getting easier now, because you're starting on a solid base. Add whatever details necessary to show who the character is, like armor or clothing or dome helmets straight out of Space Ghost...

Posted Image

Then ink that shit! if you're feeling fancy (I wasn't) you can add thicker, darker lines on shadowed areas and leave the outline thin in highlight areas. It's really up to you, just take your time and try to map out where you'll put lines. I did a really shoddy job with the clothes, I've never been good at them, but you can see again how the folds follow certain mini action lines. Now you could stop here, but why not go one step further and shade a little?

Posted Image

This is where that whole 3-D shapes thing comes in handy. After deciding on a light source, it's much easier to imagine where the shadows would fall on a box compared to a whole arm. By mapping out the forms, you get a better sense of where to go when it comes time to add shadow and highlight. By the way, DO NOT SHADE LIKE I DID. It looks terrible, I just wanted to show you where to shade, not how.

Hope this helps a bit!

First of all, I LOVE how you drew Cross, who's even a brand new character to top it off. And thank you for the lesson on dynamic fights, I never had much to go off from when fighting so this should be very helpful. The next comic should turn out a lot better thanks to you.

You do realize "A people" is actually a real thing.

Quote

people (ˈpiːpəl)

—n , peoples
1. persons collectively or in general
2. a group of persons considered together: blind people
3. the persons living in a country and sharing the same nationality: the French people
4. one's family: he took her home to meet his people
5. persons loyal to someone powerful: the king's people accompanied him in exile
6. the people
a. the mass of persons without special distinction, privileges, etc
b. the body of persons in a country, esp those entitled to vote

Felt like pointing out

Because you're essentially saying he looks like a nation

It's not as if spelling isn't important, but I think you went a little overboard on just one word. :O

But it's helpful I suppose.

It's not a matter of spelling, it's just amusing

... If you say so 8-D
  • #30

I always love when my jokes are analyzed.
  • #31

Yep, and aargh, I'm trying to get Cross in a drawing with his gun pointed forwards (facing the viewer) but I'm not too good at it. Any tips bourbon?
  • #32

Describe the shot, maybe I can help.
  • #33

It's a full body sketch of Cross aiming his pistol just above the waist. I'm having trouble drawing the pistol into his hand since it's facing forwards in that 3D sort of way, not sideways like all the other times I drew a laser pistol.

What if you do it at an angle. Small angles help a lot with stuff like this, you almost never want a full straight on view. Birds eye/Worms eye views can be fun too.
  • #35

I'll try something like that then thanks XD
  • #36

Here, I just got out of the shower and figured I'd try some poses out. Sorry they're so small, but it's good to plan scenes out small at first to make sure it looks okay.

Bourbon's a wonderful teacher, I'm learning too.

Uh, the little guy on the right with the pistol. It feels off, like he's sitting instead of standing or putting his left foot out.
  • #38

yeah, sorry, I took the picture, fixed it, and forgot to take another picture. My bad XD
  • #39

I can't believe I just created this character and you made all of those ;_; so beautiful
  • #40

Holy crap thats awesome.

@ThatGuy seeing is believing, my friend. ;)
  • #41

I know D: I can see it and it's amazing, I'm doing my best to step it up so people who have been reading so far stay with me even though I don't have the best art in the forums.
  • #42

Alrighty then, I hope to keep people interested in my thread so I'll let everyone know I'll have another page of star captain rick up tomorrow 8-D and if all goes well, it will look better.

Hint Hint.
  • #43

Okay, WOW, apparently doing better makes it longer to get done, but I should have it done tonight. I mainly have to say it's hard to get good art done on a school night. Either way I'll have the new comic up tonight
  • #44

YES! Finally done! This is what I have been working on XD
Anyways, looks like Rick just upped his game. With crazy bitchin purple eyes and a super punch :O
  • #45

"OH GOD WHY IS YOUR HELMET SO HARD MY HAND JUST TURNED TO FUCKING VAPOR WHY GOD"
  • #46

That's one way to interpret it D:

I do like working on it in digital art though, despite having to trace what was a traditional drawing with my mouse XD

My only issue is that I have no real talent in drawing backrounds yet, and it really shows in this page :nope:

Annnd we're back to traditional comic page, for now. Sorry I really let this topic fall out of sight. But here we go now, the fight's heating up!

Oh and that line in the first panel, yeah that's supposed to be the divide between the wall and the floor. Like I said, fail at backgrounds and perspective and such.

I still can't help thinking they all got erections in their pants.
But maybe that's just me.
  • #49

If that's the case it's probably because of how I draw the girls in the comic :-D how could they not pop a boner with them tig ol' bitties bouncing around? Haha, but no seriously they don't have erections.

----oh crap I forgot Callie's antennas
