Do you want in on the legacy fort?
Sure do!

I'm so happy with the fort that I'm currently playing. I have over 200 dwarfs, a countess and a big pit with a dragon in the bottom of it. yay!
  • #103

o, and what's the difference between sdl and legacy.
  • #104

We play the fort for an in game 1-2 years and then we pass the save file onto the next person.
  • #105

no, I mean on the front page of bay 12 games page you can download the sdl or legacy version of dwarf fortress.
  • #106

SDL is generally faster and is complete with more out-of-game features, like window resizing and cleartype fonts.

Legacy is for maximum compatibility.
  • #107

Ok guys are we actually going to do this because it's already past the date that it was meant to start on?
  • #108

Ugh, school is a pain right now so I would love to be last. How about I go and make up the list and stuff right now?
We can ask for a volunteer to start it and do the rest randomly, sounds good?

Rey
Nik
Supah
Hero
Rex
Super pow

(list of people so far I believe)
(Also not the order we are going in, that will be in a future post if we all agree)

Yeah, I'm a bit caught up with school also. Any way we could just start this in a couple weeks when the term is over?
  • #110

Unfortunately seconded
  • #111

Im fine with holding off a few weeks, but this is precisely how little ideas like this get left to rot. We just keep putting it off until its completely forgotten :smirk:

Anyone know a way to keep people's interest in this until we can actually do it? I could do a little community fort until you guys are ready to start our legacy fort.
  • #112

That does sound good, just school is blech right now. Give me a week or two and I am done.

If the community fort is being done, I call... miner I guess. :nope: <--- That is a hard hat, right?
  • #113

Alright. Unless someone has a better idea, I will start the fort tonight and try to do daily or semi-daily updates on it. Anyone interested in having a dwarven character in my fort just needs to speak up. Since I am the one playing, you don't even need to know how to play DF to be a part. Just throw out a name and gender for your dwarf and we are set.
  • #114

Nik, Male.

Thanks for keeping the thread alive Rex.
  • #115

Yeah sounds like A good idea, My school year ends in 3 days.... you know in Australia. :D
  • #116

How about Ice (however you say that in dwarf language)

Animal... Trainer?

O and Super pow the male fisher dwarf hehehe. probably the first dwarf to die in the fort. Death by carp.... I can see that happening.
  • #118

Hey, guys, get me in on that overseer list. I was dumb enough to sign up for the new Something Awful Dwarf Fortress LP and i want some experience before i have to go entertain a forum full of goons :C
  • #119

Ok, though a warning it will be in a couple weeks Brocky
  • #120

Yep. Although I still need more people for my community fort!
  • #121

I vote you start grabbing other forum names and such. Naming some of the dwarfs after people on the forum could quite possibly lead to some funny things.
  • #122

Yeah, don't even wait for them to volunteer. Honestly, if they don't like being named after a dwarf in a simulation fortress you can always change the name.
  • #123

I mean have an entire fortress populated by forum members. The mayor and various nobles will be the moderators and such.
  • #124

Alrighty; I'll start on the 25th. I'd like to have started tomorrow, but you know, thanksgiving and such. In two days time, look for a new thread!
  • #125

What good timing! I just got back from holidays with my friends to celebrate finishing school :D

So i have a lot of free time on my hands for now.

Sorry i kinda just left. I just got pretty busy all of a sudden.

Ah, supah, right now I am just doing a "lets play" type of fortress. Still waiting on the others to start our legacy fort so we can all play...

Speaking of the lets play, I'm a day late but will be starting it today! Just got my hands on all the tools I need to properly play XD
  • #127

So your recording the lets play and posting videos to YouTube? if so give us a link, i'll follow along :D i love watching "lets play" videos.

Also who is going first on our shared fort? anyone volunteering or do we just want to pick someone at random?

  • #128

Unfortunately the legacy fort has been postponed due to school related circumstances, sorry Supah.
  • #129

I'm doing a written lets play, the topic is on the first page of this forum, but I always did want to do a nice youtube let's play.
  • #130

A video let's play of Dwarf Fortress would be SO BORING!
  • #131

I like them. I've watched quite a few on youtube.
written ones are good too though.

I like the "Boatmurdered" stuff, and sooner or later I think I'm gonna try to do something similar solo just for kicks.
  • #133

Let's plays level of enjoyability depend completely on the commentator.

Anyone else here heard of the awesome tale of Battlefailed? Truly and awe-inspiring fortress.
Link for those who want it.
  • #135

Yea, sorry for not being on... much at all. Been very sick today.
  • #136

I found this illustration of a fortresses downfall and survival. Pretty funny
Spoiler

  • #137

That is brilliant
  • #138

So far any of my fortress involve boring monotony. Nothing too exciting ever happens and it makes me feel sad that my dorfs aren't being massacred.

Your fort isn't decent enough to be massacred yet. Build more. Dig deeper.

I found the monotony to be directly related to how easy of an area you picked. Challenge yourself. Embark on a haunted glacier and try surviving the first year.

Next version (Which is going to be out before chirstmas) will add a lot more challenge to the game, along with improving the game in general. You are going to be fending off werewolves and vampires... that live in your fortress.

Today I update Bittersweet Fortress! Wee procrastination!

Current thing to discuss: How scary the DF forums can be.

I am reading a thread on there about how to catch merpeople for their bones as they are worth a bunch. People are discussing catching adults to breed children, as children have just as many bones as adults.

Please tell me I am not the only one kind of scared of that. Though some of the ideas people are supplying are hilarious.

Heh, I've been a bay12 forumite for a looong time :)
  • #144

I am a horrible forum person. Horrible as in I almost entirely lurk (This is my attempt at not doing so for this forum) so joining bay12 would be a bad idea for me haha.

Still there is some weird and funny stuff there.

I did something similar with dogs. I brought a bunch with me because they're cheap as dirt at departure, they breed rather fast, and one of my dwarves liked to eat dog meat apparently. So yeah, half of my economy was based on puppies for the first 2 years. Ate the meat, made crafts from the bones, made leather from their pelts. But then the elves brought me a fucking breeding pair of jaguars.

I am now imagining an entire fortress that is dressed in jaguar fur everything. That fort must have been fabulous.
  • #147

Fabulous in the most homosexual way possible 8-)

I can only play it seriously when inspiration strikes, but much like a Strange Mood it always happens at the absolute worst time possible. Hence, Dwarf Fortress has RUINED finals week for me every semester since may of 2010. It never fails. Fortunately, its never caused me to fail either so I can't really complain.
