Yeah when i was doing my HSC i had a very strong compulsion to not study and just play dwarf fortress :P

Pretty sure I failed a few classes because of Dwarf Fortress. I mean, really, building a gigantic obsidian phallus 28 z-levels high is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more important than Intro to PoliSci.
  • #152

Oh wow, Dwarf Fortress sounds so melancholy on the piano.

Sirocco, Adams - Dwarf Fortress - Tindeck MP3 Download
  • #153

That's really cool on piano. Its the perfect music for adventure mode.
  • #154

That is pretty awesome, but what sounds like the stuff that should be in the foreground is really overshadowed by what I would guess is the background piano. Makes it a little difficult to listen to. The problem does go away around the middle mark however.
  • #155

There is one part at around 1:10 that I dislike; it doesn't translate well from guitar -> piano. Other then that I like it.

Mind hinting me to a part in the piece that sounds like what you are are talking about, Nik?
  • #156

Hrmm... giving it a couple more listens I am not too sure about what I was complaining about... Listening again it sounds overall pretty good.

Sorry Rex, haha
  • #157

So I suggest we start this weekend. Who here agrees? Remember that we can get someone who isn't busy to start it and that you will have one week to do your year in game.
  • #158

I am going to a friends 18th on Saturday so i can't start it. Should we figure out what kind of area we want to start in or just let whoever goes first decide?
  • #159

How about it has to be a little evil, nothing all good.

Edit:
So here the list that I made through a randomizer thing. If you have problems with when you are going please try to inform someone at least 2 days before you have to take it.
List is as follows:
  • Super Pow
  • Nik
  • Rex
  • Supah
  • Rey
  • Brocky

Sounds good everyone?

  • #161

Yeah that seems fine for me.
  • #162

Yeah, about that: I don't think I'll be able to participate in it. Sorry. :(

Yeah sure but I'm not sure how we are going to pass it on plus It's alot of pressure to pick the spot and stuff.
... maybe we could use drop box... or whatever works.

Don't worry too much about the location, just try not to make it too easy haha
  • #166

Am cool with the list order.
Hope i don't get put in charge right in the middle of something bad fun

Picking a starting area isn't too hard as long as we aren't in a area that's not too hard but still challenging we should be fine. like Untamed wilds or wilderness should probably be fine or we could go for haunted for a bit more of a challenge.

A river nearby might be helpful too because we could channel it into the fort and set up a safer fishing and water spot for Dwarves, or an underground one if someone is up for tunneling for underground caves

Super Pow, you are officially up! Do awesome as I know you will.
  • #168

Oh, and dont worry about any decisions you make. Like I said before, the more chaos the fort is when I get it, the more FUN I'll have :)
  • #169

Would people be ok with posting pictures of the fort between turnovers? That way we can see it evolve over time and possibly locate things when stuff gets too hectic.
  • #170

I wonder what our fortress will be named.

Also how long do we have to take our turn?

Ok guys I was wondering if you could test something for me, The link below is to a region and a fortress I just made. It would be awesome If you first off see If you can download it straight off the link and secondly see if It can be loaded Into dwarf fortress when it is in df_31_25_win > data > save after you unzip it.

Thank you :D

You will have a week to complete a year in game. It is awesome if you don't take that long and with an explanation you can take a little longer.

No not at all I finished my year I can upload it now if you want.
  • #177

you might as well hand it over to Nik if hes ready to start his turn
  • #178

Sure, but as a warning I might get swamped the christmas stuff. I will definitely finish before my week is up though. Also does anyone know a way to get an image of the fortress? So we can have a bit of a timeline thing going on?
  • #179

Man, i am noticing that list is severely lacking in me. What a terrible tragedy.
  • #180

Consider that lack rectified, welcome aboard. 8-)

If you have any questions about it feel free to ask.
  • #182

Ok i completely re-did the first post to include the list and various resources.
What do you guys think?
  • #183

I like it!

Echo! (Echo! [Echo!])
  • #184

Who is up next cause he it is: Linky

So not too much happened. Got a ton of migrants and I sent them to engrave stuff until I knew what to do with them. I also found a cavern for someone to explore way down low.
  • #185

My turn :D
  • #186

Little issue... you guys have your settings different then mine, and... well, I have no idea what I am looking at now:

Spoiler

  • #187

So here is the problem, I told the chaps to engrave everything so the walls now are engraved which makes them a bit annoying to make out, as the floor is also engraved. What you have there is this:
Spoiler

  • #188

Ah. I usually set engravings to Obscured in the d_init file, it makes engravings just change the tile to a shiny version of the wall/floor. Too bad it doesnt work Retroactively... I'll have to deal with it. Thanks for pointing it out, Nik!

  • #189

Do you guys mind if i change the tileset for my turn?
  • #190

No prob Supah
  • #191

You can easily just pull out the art files out of the save game folder before uploading it, so any of us can use any tiles we wish.

Today's going-ons:

1. I obscured all of the engravings. They can be unobscured if you wish, but I personally like to be able to see the floor and walls :P

2. One of the carpenter's died shortly after I started playing. She had no upper body; unfortunate! So, what I did was...

3. I created a burial chamber. This is located between the stone working level and the mass-smoothing area. Its a small area with walkways surrounded by pits, with statues against the walls. Coffins are on the extremities; top and bottom.

4. I noticed we have no water (at least none in the winter) due to all of it freezing up. I started working my way into the cavern and, tomorrow, I will try to create a secure area for water.

5. I made the farms produce year-round.

6. I finished the rooms for one of the wings; I'll probably make another wing too.

7. I moved our refuse stockpile indoors, but it is getting almost no use. Anyone know why? They are usually always full in my games. Maybe its the cold. I used a little trick with with floors in order to prevent miasma; don't worry about that.

8. Booze for everyone! I started production of more booze.

More to come tomorrow!

Our fortress has a disturbing lack of chickens.
  • #194

Awesome update Rex, sounds fun.

And screw chickens. Not literally though. Why would we need chickens again?
  • #195

can get lots of eggs, meat and bones from chickens since they breed quickly.
I always like to embark with some feathery friends

Remember to put new animals in the pasture. We had one starve to death already.

Honestly, I never had animal farms. Normal farms make soooo much food, and they make drink. Bones arent really necessary in mass quantities, and butchering puppies works well.

That sounds terrible :(
  • #197

Yo, I still operate under the thoughts of old Dwarf Fortress. What is this pastures you speak of!?!
  • #198

Its a Zone. Like the garbage dump/meeting area zones, you can make a Pasture. I think you can just hover over it with Zones selected ("I") and apply animals to it.
  • #199

It has to have grass though i think otherwise the animals can't eat and just starve to death. just make a walled in area outside and have it going into the fort would be easiest

One other thing. What are you guys using to upload your save files to the net so we can download it? i need something to use for my turn.
