Dwarf Fortress

I wouldn't mind doing that legacy Fort thing. When i originally started this topic i was hoping we could get something like this going.
Community fort sounds like fun too.

I downloaded Dwarf Fortress and tried a game today...
I had no goddamned clue what I was doing, kinda like when I started minecraft.
I like it =D

The Complete and Utter Newby Tutorial for Dwarf Fortress tutorial if you want some guidance. Or just watch your dwarfs get acquainted with the local wild life. :smirk:

Why would you use anything that's not DF Wiki?

I do think dwarf wiki is great and i use it myself a lot. I only pointed out that tutorial because it has a premade map and guides players through it. Which i found incredibly helpful.

And we can give the various dwarfs forum members names too. They just won't necessarily be in control of them when it isn't there turn. But yeah, legacy fort. I am learning the ropes now so hopefully I can take part. 8-D
  • #52

You don't have to be super pro to take part. its all about having fun.
as long as the fort doesn't get too fucked.

The most hilarious parts of a fort is when the newb gets a hold of a long-running fort and things start imploding. Hilarious. We need you, Nik!
  • #54

Newb gets fort in year 8, sooooooo many dwarves...

And then megabeast.
  • #55

That sounds equal parts fun and sobbing in a corner.

Sounds awesome!
  • #56

Hey do any of you guys use Dwarf Therapist or Dwarf Manager?

This post has been edited by Supah: 19 October 2011 - 01:20 AM

  • #57

Yes.
  • #58

I got Dwarf Manager when I downloaded the pack
  • #59

I intended to get Dwarf Therapist when I started playing again yesterday, but I got caught up in tweaking the display, relearning controls, and telling my friend what all the colored letters mean.

My new fortress is called Rekedagakstukos Memrut, run that through your dwarf translators.

Shall we get a list of all those interested in taking part of the Legacy Fort? Perhaps also a start date, give everyone some time to make sure they won't be totally lost once they get there turn.

We could also use a name pool for what to name all the dwarfs, or should we only name a handful after those taking part in this? Anyone else like the idea of naming the various dwarfs after people from the forum?
  • #61

When the game gets to your turn, pick a dwarf and name them after yourself, and that will represent you. That's how I've done it in the past.
  • #62

Yep. As Rey said. I dont have anything against naming more dwarves if you really want to. I mean, when its your turn, you can do whatever the hell you want ;)

I would recommend making the fort on a pocket world. Very small download size, in case your internet is borked. Huge worlds can hit 75-100megs ;P
  • #63

Sounds good. also naming all the dwarves after people on the forum would be funny. :D
How are we going to decide on turns? idc when i go i was just wondering.
One other thing to am doing my HSC exams for school until the 10th of November so i might not have a lot of time to play at the moment.

I guess we will swap every in-game year :)

Two ways to decide turns:

1. We get a list of everyone participating and randomize it.

2. Whoever has it hands it off to someone who hasn't had it yet when their turn is over.

Also, how different is DF2010 from 40d? Because if most of the changes are just adding new stuff and the general mechanics and menus are the same, can we please use 40d? I don't have much time to relearn the general controls as it is, let alone find out how all the new labours and workshops and so on works. I mean, if I have to, I will, but it would be nice if we can use the simpler version.

I guess we could, but there's really not much more to learn if you already knew 40d. I dont know how the new workshops work myself because there hasn't really been a reason to screw around with them.

40d is extremely outdated. The only thing I prefer about it is the military interface.
  • #67

Am playing with version 0.31.16
  • #68

Thats the latest DF2010 version, Supah :)
  • #69

So i am assuming we all have to use the same version for this to work?
  • #70

Yes.
  • #71

Also, for the list of people. I think we should go with the randomized list idea as the more ordered we are the less confusing it will get. I also think we should wait a little while, like a week at most, before we dive in.

I am guessing no one wants to do the whole write up/screen shot method from the previously posted Boatmurdered link? It does look like a bit of work to do.
  • #72

We don't need to do a whole journal thing like Boatmurdered, but if anyone wants to actually do it no one is stopping you.

also am busy with finishing school so waiting a bit gives us time to organize and make sure we are all familiar with the version were using.

Mind if I ask how long till you finish school then? Also should we put a limit on how long you should keep a hold of the fort? An example would be someone who has stuff happen in real life that prevents them from telling us and from working on the fort. Should we wait a week for them or 5 days or what?
  • #74

well my last HSC test is on the 10th of November.
I suppose we could give people a week to finish their turn. you could finish a year in game in like a day if you played for a few hours, although you don't have to take en entire week for your turn.
  • #75

So, just us four?
  • #76

I think so. Unless someone else comes in and wants to join as well
  • #77

Sounds good. I shall be sure to try to learn how to use pumps and such during my turns. Also how to make towers, I mean building above ground? Crazy talk I say!
  • #78

how do you make it so dwarfs don't go outside? i can't seem to figure out how to make them gather in the fort.
  • #79

Hey, I started playing it today, and I'd like to join that legacy thing.
But I need to learn a lot more first hahaha

I can't exactly remember how to do it, but I know the wiki does. Search the wiki for how to set burrows. Burrows restrict a dwarf's movement to a certain area, you just need to assign the entire fort to one.

And we would be glad to have you Hero! Learn as much or as little as you need. I need muh heroine anyway <3
  • #81

Or you could forbid the area outside. I think it was in the d menu and you set traffic options. From there you can organize how much traffic a place gets, down to forbidding it out right.
  • #82

Forbidding only makes each forbidden space count as 50 spaces for purposes of pathfinding. Forbidding dwarves to go outside is under the "Orders" menu in 40d at least, not sure with DF2010.
  • #83

That order is gone from 2010. Gotta do it with burrows.
  • #84

That sounds stupid, how am I gonna glitch the game into making me a "Planepacked"?
  • #85

with burrows.

The wiki page to planepacked says how.

  • #86

oh burrows i was trying to use zones.

All my dwarfs kept running outside to be struck down in a hail of goblin arrows and bolts.
  • #87

Welcome to the fun Hero. Might I suggest the ultimate Newbies Guide to start you off?
  • #88

Thank you, Nik. I'm going to take a look at it.

If I may ask: when will it begin?

I'd also have to recommend Captnduck's youtube tutorials:

Dwarf Fortress Video Tutorials - YouTube
  • #90

Beginning looks to be around the 11th of November or a bit after that.

Edit:
So I am guessing the list is now:
  • Rey
  • Nik
  • Supah
  • Hero
  • Rex

And should we set the tentative start date of November 14th?

Edit2:
Perhaps we should add another throw on rule, when you are done your term set your dwarf to your dream fortress job and later rulers will try not to stop them from that.

Do people like this idea or not?

  • #91

That sounds about right.
Also on the rule, i just say people can do whatever they want on their turn.
  • #92

Midnight on a Sunday... as good a time as any.
I'm going to play Dwarf Fortress for the first time. Wish me luck. :smirk:

Luck haha
  • #94

Also, everyone should be able to play a minimum of two times each. If the fortress ends beforehand, we will make a new fortress.

Sounds fun! Hope you guys will like this. Around the eleventh we can see if everyone is ready yet :)
  • #95

we could revert back to a previous save if the fortress gets too screwed instead of remaking, but we could make a decision on that later if it does happen.
  • #96

Just everyone make sure to keep a copy of your save when you're finished. If you fuck up royally, ask the person before you for another copy.

Or, if you get the fortress completely destroyed, your turn is over, and the next person starts with the last save. But if there are still living, healthy, adult dwarves, you keep going, even if it's just one dwarf.
  • #97

Hey should we make like a shared mediafire or similar upload account (like megaupload or something idk) for us all to use for the purpose of passing the save file onto the next person?
  • #98

Yes, that is what we will do :)
  • #99

o man, I love dwarf fortress. :D
