The bob-omb is cute. C:

How long have you been drawing for? I could give some critique for sure but I don't know what kind of style you're trying to go for. As a realistic artist myself I can help with that, but I'm not so good where cartoony things are concerned.

That said, it would help a lot if you worked more on the underlying shape instead of jumping straight into the final lines.

I've wanted to draw since I was a little kid, but I was no good... a few months ago I realized it was probably because I had never actually put any effort into practicing. So I set to improving my art. As far as style goes, there's nothing specific I'm aiming for, my main goal is learning to take what's in my head an putting it down on paper. Hopefully, I'll soon realize exactly what kind of style that entails, but I'm not sure yet. Also, you're right, it would probably help to sketch it out in pencil first... although it seems a bit unnecessary for quick, simple doodles like these. When drawing more complex and serious things I usually do take the time to get an outline done in pencil before starting on the pen lines. In summary, thanks for commenting. I'll keep your advice in mind next time I draw. :)

An admirable goal, then. Improvement for improvement's sake. Indeed, mayhap all you need is to just start drawing and see where it goes. I know as you go it may not seem like you're improving, but when you finally stop and look back you'll see that you've come a lot further than you thought. C:

Also apparently I don't know how to properly quote things. D :

I just click "Reply" under the post. If you need to quote multiple things, click reply then copy/paste it into a normal post along with any others you want to quote. That's neither here nor there, however. Thank you for the encouragement. :D

Here's 2 pages full of doodles I drew during class today. Hopefully tommorow I'll have something to post that I've invested slightly more time into. (PNG this time)

Also, if anyone knows a way to keep my scanner from leaving those huge shadows in the middle of the sketchbook, that would be helpful. :O

aHA! Quote success!
As for fixing that line there, while I don't think there's a way to do it via the scanner itself, you can always edit the image in photochop or something. That way you can crop it and resize it and get rid of that line down the center, all in one fell swoop! :D

Also that nope engineer. XD

Today I practiced drawing human body parts. Most of them were better looking in the pencil sketches, and ended up worse because I have a shaky hand and a bad pen. Still, that's no excuse. I also have some sort of weird phobia towards drawing shadows or something, and every time I try I can never quite figure out where they should go. That probably accounts for a good chunk of the crappy-ness these drawings contain. Anyways, here's some of my better experiments:

I'm assuming you're saying that they're crappy, because they are. :/
I'm not very good at drawing realistic things, but getting good at that is my goal, so I have to try.

Also: quick sketch of Mike's face. I'm going to attempt to color it, but I'm still getting the hang of using GIMP and it probably won't turn out well.

Don't think that's too bad a Karkat you have there. The problem mostly is that you don't draw continuous lines but instead just wiggle the pencil back and forth which results in... That. Take some drawing of yours and try re-doing it with continuous strokes?
  • #17

I don't have a steady grip at all, so I get more accurate lines that way. What I could try is drawing them like that, then half-erasing them and making more solid lines on top of them. Come to think of it, that's actually not a bad idea! Thanks for the feedback. :)
  • #18

Colored. It's shitty, as expected. :nope: Actually, cleaner sketch lines would have made this infinitely easier. I feel smart. :x
On a completely related note, I promise I will never again put this much time into something that's most definitely not worth it.

  • #20

Hey look guys, it's Mike again! This one is more similar to the actual style of the comic, but that's probably because I sketched it based on Mike's face in panel 2 of today's comic. Lines are a bit shaky, but otherwise I kinda like it. :D

Apologies, Gabu, I didn't mean it that way. I was trying to say that next time I'll put just as much time into it and I'll make it worth it.
  • #21

Dat face. It's wiiiide.

I'd suggest making his face a bit skinnier.
  • #22

These were some quick doodles that turned out particularly well. Not saying that much though.
Actually, that second one looks to similar to the winged serpent in the first post. I'll have to be more careful to put interesting variations on otherwise similar things.
Plus, both sets of wings look terrible. I really should have given these a better look over before deciding to post.
Spoiler

I'm planning to post here a bit more often then I have been, so that's something.
I'll probably repost these two later after inking them, I had no idea pencil would look so cruddy after going through my scanner.

I can't for the life of me come up with any ideas for what to draw. If anyone cares, of is just bored, I encourage you to give me ideas.
I would ask you to request things but I don't think I can draw at a high enough level to use that word, since it implies some desire on the requester's part. :/

Even without additional ideas, I'll try to get a couple of things done today that I can post here. :)
But seriously, help me. D:

Real Life is a huge bitch... this thread is almost becoming my excuse for visiting the forum when I should be working. :nope:
I have very little time to draw as well, so I'm posting something else from my graphic design class. The goal was to take a photo and use the paint bucket and polygon select tools in photoshop to trace over the photo into something like this. I took some liberties with the facial features and the shirt's shading and design, but...

Tl;Dr: Here's a picture.

I could probably track down the original photograph if you want.

I have recently come to the revelation that just because that art meme isn't going to be done anytime soon is no reason to stop posting art. So here, have some samurai armor. I'll try to scrounge up some more post-able material as soon as possible. :O
Posted Image
It's admittedly very rough, and I'm pretty sure I fucked up the perspective in a few places, but overall it is not exactly my worst work.
That's just my opinion though, I encourage you to share yours. :)
It looks like the art meme isn't going to happen just yet, by the way. I'd need to learn all sorts of things from digital coloring to cleaning to not fucking up my art at the inking phase. I'll try to learn to do all that stuff, but in the meantime, all it's doing is discouraging me from working on other large projects. Therefore, I'm postponing it until I feel confident that I can get it done properly.

Headphones! :O
Spoiler

The stuff I draw, especially the armor above, always look better on paper than they do after coming through the scanner.
Gotta say though, prisma-color pencils are awesome.
In other news, GOD DAMN, I did a shitty shading job on this. ;_;
I had an idea what I wanted the shading to look like, but I had a spot of trouble learning to shade with those pencils. I'm gonna need more practice with that.

Looking back now, other than some errant pen lines, I rather like how this turned out. It could stand to be a whole lot better, though. I might experiment some more with this style in the future.

umm... I can't tell how far one is supposed to be from the other, looks kinda 2 dimensional 8-D . Then again I'm retarded.

The coloring is pretty good. Albeit kind of not smooth.
  • #44

Any art always looks better in person than when it's scanned. It's because the harsh white of the scanning light tends to wash out light colours and lightly drawn lines, leaving things looking washed out and under-saturated. Depending on what programs you have installed, you can easily run a levels check and make your images look better. What programs do you use? c:

It'd probably look more 3-dimensional if I hadn't fucked up the perspective a bit on the one with the cord, but I didn't notice that until it was inked.
Alas, something to keep in mind for next time: Double check the lines before inking. :/

I don't have money to spend on programs, so I use some GIMP and some Paint.net, since those are the only decent free ones I know of. I'm familiar with running levels checks to sharpen black and white drawings, but I was not aware it could be used for colored art. Then again, I know next to nothing about computer art, so any advice you could offer is appreciated. 8-D

Levels checks are awesome for coloured images, as well as brightness/contrast, hue/saturation and exposure checks. I don't know anything about GIMP seeing as I use Photoshop, but it probably has the same features hidden away in some obscure file menu... Somewhere.
