Mechanical Abstraction

Well... I've wanted to make an art thread of my own here for a while now but I'm very shy.
But I was cruising through and I saw Marshmallow's art and and it gave me juuuust that little bit of a courage boost to get out of my comfort zone and make a thread of my own.

I tend to draw things of a more science fiction nature and little to no fanart, so there will probably be little BCB art posted here. I do, however, really enjoy reading the tips and pointers you guys give to other artists, so here's to hoping I'll slowly improve over time. c:

Here's a camera man. He likes long walks through space and time and enjoys tea by the galactic center. C:
Posted Image

And this is an alien called a slyfthys. AKA weird alien dude with the backwards legs.
Posted Image

And this was a gift for a friend. It was my first time doing a digital piece from start to finish, and at that my first time really using Corel Painter. This one especially I'd love some tips on in regards to, well, everything.
Posted Image

That's all for now. I'm hoping to post some new sketches soon. I've gotten back into drawing again after a bout of depression so it feels good to do what I love once more and I've been drawing a lot lately. Thank you all for taking the time to look. Peace. C:

Damn. I think you may be one of the better artists on this forum. I'd give critique but you outclass me. BADLY. D:

You don't have to be awesome to know when something looks wrong. If ever you notice something awkward don't hesitate to point it out. #^_^#

And you were self-conscious about your work

I DEMAND EXCLUSIVE THREAD TO BE MADE MARSHMALLOW + BOURBON + RAKSHIV ART
  • #5

To be fair, the first drawing looks rather unfinished, but these are exceptional, so that's about the best advice I could give.

Have you considered working in video game or movie design? Even though almost all the final work is done on computers, pretty much anything visual is planned out by pencil first. And let's face it--these drawings are more creative than half the stuff I see in movies or games.
  • #6

I'm a shy individual. D:
Also I wasn't sure if I should post my work on a forum for a webcomic about things that aren't monstrous. It was because I was cruising through and found Marhmallow's awesome sci fi work that I realized 'HEY! I can post here too!' :P

Actually, I do work in the entertainment industry. I'm currently working on the miniatures for a tabletop RPG. I do 3D work as well. I'll post some of it later along with some new creature concepts I've been working on. :D

Have you seen my thread? It consists almost entirely of original creations completely unrelated to BCB. Really, posting any original work is fine here, the taboo is simply limited to "fan characters." I've posted some of my more monstrous drawings on here too--so don't be shy. Really, you've got talent, you should flaunt it. :D
  • #8

I have indeed. I was unsure, but I'm glad I finally slapped myself upside the head and forced myself to make a thread.
Also, is the taboo only related to fan characters of BCB, or fan characters in general? I've got one or two fan characters from video games and I don't know if I can post them or not.

Also here's some examples of my 3D work if anyone's curious. C:

A toe man.

And one of the main characters from that pesky novel that I need to finish sometime soon.

I'm pretty sure it's just fan characters of BCB. I don't think anyone's really posted fan characters of other works though, so don't quote me on it.

Hero, stop being such a suck-up. It's pretty annoying.

anyhoo humina humina humina I really like the second sketch, I think it looks really nice with the sribbly underneath. I am always fascinated by the process of the artist and how they go about making the sketch before making the polished linework. The sketch lines seem more geometric to me, and I've always found that pretty cool. Not like a noodly mess :P

Also all fancharacters are allowed, you can post any from any fandom including BCB, however with the latter there's a brigade around that like to bandwagon the "i h8 fancharacters" shtick just because of me. But you shouldn't pay much mind to them!

though i do ignore fancharacter artists :( besides why would you wanna draw cats when you draw such cool-looking monsters? I'm really digging the toe-man.

And yeah, you're allowed to post whatever the heck you want, I think it's really cool we're getting artists that are posting pretty alternate works, it's refreshing! There's honestly quite a lot of styles in forum topics recently so I hope that kind of gets rid of the belief that you can only draw fanart in topics.
  • #11

Actually that was supposed to be sarcastic. The last sentence at least, but I admit I am at fault. Sorry.

Being serious now, I like your "creepy" style, Rakshiv.

I know I say it often in real life, but you have amazing skills :D.

Everyone who's commented so far has agreed that you have awesome art, and I'm pretty sure that everyone here has better drawing skills than me :P.

For now, I think I'll stick to writing, and coming up with plot twists for your fan fiction :P.
  • #13

@Taeshi: Thanking ye very kindly. Aye, I tend to keep the sketchiness in because I like the way it looks too. You'll see a lot of sketchiness! Interestingly enough, when I first started drawing my construction lines were a lot more organic and scribbly than they are now.

And come on. I like to draw cute things too every once in a while. C:

@Hero: Heh, creepy. I get that a lot in real life like you wouldn't believe. I blame all the sci fi I've read and watched and played over the course of my existence. XD

@BetaWolf: Oh pshaw, Gin. ;P

HOKAI so here's a few semi respectable sketches I gleaned from my falling apart sketch book. Yes, that is my take on Spyro there. The second one is some sort of rock gremlin thing. And the third one is a very angry looking portrait of Bael, the main big bad guy in my novel. I think he's angry because I drew him on a bus.
Posted Image

And over here is some concepts for a grim reaper type character, followed by a Dead Space fan character at the bottom left and another novel character at the bottom right.
Posted Image

Last but not least some digital doodles. Beal again, a demon dude named Alistor who just wants his hat, and Tejed, a fan character for Metroid. There's some swearing in this one so head's up.

That's a painting? I thought it was like, digital stuff with textures...

That's pretty badass and impressive, though!! I mostly like the coloring mix and the texture, although that right eye (our POV) seems like it should be darker to me. Besides that, wow. Very nice break form the cutesy stuff around here.

Am I the only one who would like to see a widescreen clipping of this? I would gladly use this as my background if I could get it in 1080p.

On a side note, that face reminds of the Disturbed's mascot. Not really identical, but similar enough to invoke it. Which, in itself, is a symptom of awesome.
  • #20

Your creatures have a really great sense of shape. Their silhouette is easy to read and it instantly gives them that cool creepy mood. I especially like the dude with the wolverine claws. These would look great in a horror game imo, I would love to see someone animate that camera head thing. :)

One thing I could critique when it comes to your painting is that your shading seems overworked, especially on that black-and-white pic. I still struggle with this to some extent, but I find that the best way to resolve this usually comes down to finding a way to work loose and efficiently. Try to find ways to paint quickly, because that initial motivation at the beginning of a drawing is where most of the good bits show at the end of a drawing session.

Hope to see more! These are great! Speaking of creatures, I think you'll love looking at Feng Zhu's work. :) He's very inspiring when it comes to shape design. Check out his approach:

Omigawd Marshmallow those videos are love. Thank you very much, both for posting them and the tips. I've really only just started digital painting. I've done traditional pen drawings my whole life so I want to try something different. I've been playing around trying to find a technique that works. No real luck yet, but I'll only find it by playing around!

As for the traditional painting there, it's mainly watercolour with some acrylic over top to help with the details that the watercolour couldn't handle. And you're very observant, Carcharocles. I originally made the painting in the hopes that I could get it signed by Disturbed at a concert a while back. Sadly, they didn't have an autograph session, but hey! I got to see David Draiman in the flesh! I'm such a huge Disturbed fan it's not even funny. :D

If you guys really want you can hop over here: Insanity-Engine's deviantART Gallery and hit download. There's a bigger version of the image there. C:
  • #22

Oh, my comment about your painting was directed at your digital painting one, not your watercolors. I think that one looks absolutely perfect. Sorry for the confusion!

Digital painting techniques will come in time. It mostly just comes down to experimenting with techniques til you find something that works for you.
  • #23

Oh! I know!
The traditional painting comment was aimed at the people who asked about the traditional painting. XD
  • #24

You are amazing, my good sir.
Can I borrow your art skills? I need a new house.
Seriously, keep them coming, I love your creations!
  • #25

Wow. I really like your work, Rakshiv. I love the detail you are putting into them, and horror theme you have going on. That moon is absolutely epic. If that was high resolution... oh god... forget my abstract background, that moon is MUST HAVE.

So, Rakshiv.
I have your moon as my background.

Your art is gorgeous :)

Honest to god I misread that as "I have your mom as my background" and it scared the shit out of me! D :
Shock aside, thank you. I'm glad you're enjoying it!

And you can borrow my art skills, ZorZhen, but I'll need them back by next friday. ;P

As for you, Rex, there's a link a few posts up to the painting on deviantArt. If you go and hit the download link on the right side you'll get a higher resolution image. C:

THAT SAID I did a quick BCB meme cause I thought it was fun. I can't really draw cartoony stuff very well, but I wanted to do the meme anyway so I did. :P

Absolutley love AbbeyXDaisy is panel 2. So awesome!

I also love how you did panel 4 and 5. Awesome work :)

Also like the idea of Augustus in panel 10 being an alien. Would be an awesome plot twist XD.

Keep up the work :D

I wanna see this revised some time, in my opinion. :P

Yeah I'm totally digging that Roger!
  • #31

Roger scares me. There's something evil about that cat that just frightens me on a visceral sort of level. :C

So I'm slowly working on a picture of Vul'darin, a grim reaper type character for my novel. He's actually a pretty cool guy, who doesn't afraid of anything, but that's beside the point. I just finished the sketch and am currently blocking in the tones. Sort of experimenting with a new way to digitally paint. I like to do the black and white then go for colour. At this point I'm all over critiques! :D

SO screw all that above. I decided I won't colour this, at least not any time soon. I'm too enamoured by digital painting at this point in time.

You are really good with creepy stuff. Sadly, I'm not good with criticism, so I can't help you :)
  • #33

Holy Moses. Your creepy stuff. The detail. I love the little spine monster you did, as well as the stooped, clawed cearture you did.

The digital work that you've posted here... The paintings seems to just... blur. I know the affect you are going for but... Well, I can't really tell you how to fix it, I'm just pointing it out. The tree one seems the most guilty of this in my eyes (btw... Dew+web=win... If only it was crisper...).

The features are epic in the truest sense of the word. The detail you inclued invokes these thing into a near reality. If they were jump out of my closet they would look perfectly real. I love it.

However, the camera man's wings seem off. The position of the torso and legs in regard to the view point just makes them look flat, almost like a last minute addition. The same problem occurs with the further hoof/foot/mount and the lower leg.

Draw more mosters, haunt my dreams. I like them. Horror has a beauty about it. You have captured that.

But these are just my opinions, I could be wrong...

Ps: Moon painting. File and save.

Pss: "Doodles" is not a sufficient way for these to be described as. They are way too good. Please right this most grievous error.

This post has been edited by memyselfandi: 01 November 2011 - 10:10 AM

In all technicality, MeMyselfandI, that should be PPS. PS is latin for Post-Scriptum, so PSS would be Post-Scriptum-Scriptum which just doesn't make sense. It should be Post-Post-Scriptum. ;P
Sorry, it just... bothered me.

THAT SAID. Thank you for that bit of critique. I hadn't realized how undefined my digital paintings are. Now I have something more to work towards. Thank you!

Also, is there a way to change forum titles?
  • #35

Yes. Just edit the OP. Sorry about Pss... I should know that.

Doodles and stuff... Really?

Ah, no worries.
There I changed it. That better? :P
  • #37

Seriously, just make it "art" because that's what it is.
  • #38

But it's true! There's doodles in here, and there's also stuff! D :
Nah, I'll think of a better title and change it accordingly. I don't want to just call it ART. I'm too picky like that. : P
  • #39

You made Augustus the Doctor?

...I think I love you.

Make art, not war
  • #41

@Boltgunmetal: Your username is awesome. Also thank you. C:

The "playing with fire" looks awesome! I love the pose and the fire ball. The Dragonball Z hair looks really good. I can't wait to see it finished.

Your demon... *shudder*
It's fantastic. The split mouth and the red "gills"(?) under the face really stand out, same with the blue tinged hands. It would look like a mindless creature that would stalk intergalactic corridors were it not for the rings. These are not only a good decoration but they also confer some kind of intelligence. Good job, post more.
  • #47

Dath'illyan demons are highly intelligent entities. Their motives tend to be on the unknown side due to the vast differences between their thought processes and ours, but as a whole they tend to be more benevolent to humans than malicious. Sure, there's individuals who display violence towards other species, but then every society has its ups and downs. If anything, Dath'illyas are only classified as demons for exactly two reasons: 1) For their playful, erring only briefly on the side of malicious, behaviour. They have a 'Cheshire Cat' sort of mentality and like to play pranks. And 2) Their ability to possess and take over the bodies of mortal beings. The second point there usually only happens when a demon is in mortal danger and needs a host in order to survive, but it doesn't happen very often.

The malicious members of their society, on the other hand, glean great delight out of torturing what they view as 'lesser' species, humanity being one of them. It's been speculated that Dath'illyas are one of the primary suspects in demon possessions and other supernatural phenomena, though the universe is so vast that it could easily be caused by other, stranger beings.

That said, alien appearance aside, the demons in my novel are actually pretty nice. :P

I'll probably sketch up some more silly little demon pictures just for reference one of these days. Out of all the aliens I've created thus far, the Dath'illyas are one of my favourites. C:

Rakshiv is coming along swimmingly. : D
It's almost done tone wise, almost ready for colour. I'm not quite sure yet how to go about colouring it, but I'll probably sleep on it and colour it tomorrow.

Also does anyone by chance know how to draw and/or paint galaxies? I'm stumped! D:

ALSO ALSO I enjoy doing requests and I'd be happy to do one or two for who so ever wants them. Just say the word. : D
