Go back through the thread and look at what I and other people have recommended. I try to give in my two cents for each manga someone mentions in here.

Also, I haven't gotten around to reading Psyren. It looks uninteresting to me./

When does It’s Not My Fault That I’m Not Popular! update monthly weekly bimonthly.

Psyren: even the first chapter's a spoiler.

My one friend introduced me to Akira, created by Katsuhiro Otomo. We saw the movie last night, which was sort of a mind fuck if you have no background information going into it. I'm just starting to read the manga, which of course is much more thorough and will probably make much more sense than a movie trying to cram 2000 pages into a 2 hour movie.

I remember reading that one, best manga I have ever read. Even to do this day, even better then Death Note in my mind. The way it takes you up and down with each character is crazy. The ending was prefect too. You make me want to reread it now.
  • #159

Never read much manga. All I can say is, Berserk. Holy hell. Berserk. If you haven't read it, I highly recommend it. With a great collection of characters, grade A story development, and a protagonist that defines the term badass, this manga is easily the best there is.
  • #160

If you're looking for something that's cartoony, bloody, and overall wtf, try out Getter Robo. Giant Robots that take 3 people to drive. Fighting off the dinosaur empire, demon empire, and giant alien insects. Also wierd deep meaning about evolution. Pretty awesome once you get into it.

It's actually four series in a row. It goes Getter Robo, Getter Robo G, Shin Getter Robo, and Getter Robo Go. It's actually not finished, the next one is Getter Robo Arc, but that's not translated yet.

Here's the first one (Getter Robo)
http://www.mangaread...etter-robo.html

You're welcome, America.

Here's a strange one myserious girlfriend X, sure it has fanservice but, only once per ark and there are no gazongas. And mushibugyo, samurai and fantasi stuff, but the art and story has a unique touch to it that hooks you up inmediatly, oh, but it has only 8 chapters butn they have quite a number of pages.
  • #162

Mysterious Girlfriend X is pretty weird, but I enjoy it from time to time. Moves too slow, in my opinion, though.
  • #163

I was at a thrift store today, and it just so happened that they had some manga. Got out with 8 volumes of Rurouni Kenshin and 1 volume of Yu Yu Hakusho for about 7 bucks. Not bad.
  • #164

Mushi-Shi. It's a pretty interesting, weird and laid back series, focused more on story telling than action. Well, let's be honest, there is no action, just a guy with white hair and one green eye (and only one eye) who dresses in clothes that are anachronistic and smokes rolled cigarettes. His name is Ginko, and he works as a Mushi-shi, or "Mushi Master." Ginko's job is to travel the countryside looking for people who are plagued by mushi, a fictional form of life that in-story is responsible for most of what we consider supernatural phenomena. These phenomena can be very weird, like ushering in a localized early spring, or covering a town in a substance similar to rust, or even making it appear as though a person's dreams are prophetic by bringing them to life. However, most individuals cannot see mushi and are unaware of their existence, and while never malevolent, mushi can be deadly if they aren't treated with care.

There's an anime adaptation that adapts he first 26 or so chapters, but these chapters are scrambled. It doesn't make a difference, because the stories are mostly self-contained and only occasionally link to another. This also means that there are very few recurring characters outside of Ginko. It's worth checking out.

Hah. "Mysterious X Girlfriend."

I just finished reading barario my honey, if your looking for a short and simple romance manga it's not bad
Tried reading "first girl" liked the smut, but the story line was very minimal, and incredibly hard to follow; had to quit that one.
Private prince is very fluffy, but not bad. If you've enjoyed "absolute boyfriend" you'd probably enjoy it, although there is some more smut.

Anyone have a suggestions for a pleasant romance manga with some adventure or supernatural stuff mixed in? I don't usually like reading plain old romance manga, not enough stuff going on

As for mushishi, I highly recommend checking that one out, it's really neat, a different concept.

I've started reading March Story. It's really nice, but it's insanely hard to find good scans of it online. It makes sense, though, since the first three books are already published in the US, it's just that it's being done by a small-time publisher.

Now, I'm really big on fantasy manga. And not just any fantasy manga, either. I love near-surreal fantasy manga. After all, one of the first manga that I read was Jing: King of Bandits. The art for March Story is just fantastic and it gives it it's own special feel. The concept of March Story may not be as interesting as that of Jing: King of Bandits, which the manga is most similar to in terms of feel, but it's good nonetheless. The story follows March, a hunter of these monsters called Ils. Ils reside inside objects and are activated by a strong sense of desire. Again, it's not the most original concept for a story, but it works with how it is delivered. Throughout the story, March helps other people with thei Il woes and many of the story archs focus more on March's clients. However, there are several chapters where March and company get to shine. March is just so wonderfully adorable when letting her guard slip, and the large and terrifying Jean is much kinder than she looks and a complete badass when she gets to fight Ils. There are a lot of romance themes in it as well. In the second chapter, March helps out a girl when the man she loves becomes an Il. In the second chapter, an Il hasn't completely possessed the human host and is only trying to fulfill a promise. It's a manga definitely worth looking into if you're into fantasy.

Do you care for harem manga and the antics (shameless fanservice) that go on in them? If so try Mahou Sensei Negima, a Great manga that I need to get back into(got busy lost my links etc...). I'm sure you've read Fruits Basket though, that's a good one
  • #170

I'm not one to usually be into watching anime, but I've found two that I think are pretty interesting.

Michiko to Hatchin

Quote

Set in what seems to be some kind of alternate-universe Brazil, Michiko to Hatchin tells the story of Hana Morenos. Hana is routinely abused by every single member of her adopted family, who only takes care of her because the government pays them to...until one day, an escaped convict named Michiko Malandro crashes though their kitchen window on a motorcycle, claiming to be Hana's real mother. Confused but willing to do anything to escape, Hana agrees to go with her...

Shirokuma Cafe

Quote

Shirokuma Cafe revolves around a Canadian white bear that quits his boring job and starts a cafeteria near a zoo. He loves telling tall tales and always brags about himself. According to him, he was picked up by a human couple who owns a diner while he was drifting around on an iceberg.

Though he has lost all contact with his Canadian family, he has discovered a new home in serving the diners’ clientele, thanks to the kind couple. His café is an embodiment of his personality. The place is always packed with many regulars, animals and humans, who are drawn by his charismatic magnetism.

  • #171

Well I'll see if I can remember the one's I've read.

The World God Only Knows
Love Hina
Cowboy Bebop
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Soul Eater
Dragon Ball
Battle Royale
Berserk
Gants Gantz
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
Death Note
Inuyasha
Full Metal Alchemist
Elfen Lied
Hellsing
Naruto
One Piece
Vagabond
Ghost In A Shell
Samurai Champloo
Yankee-kun to Megane-chan
Ziggy Zippy
Midori Days
Shingeki no Kyojin
Fairy Tail
Flame Of Recca
Black Lagoon
Chobits
Rurouni Kenshin
and Cheeky Angel

As for what I'd specifically recommend, Vagabond is fantastic if you want great art and a epic samurai story.

Of course, Berserk. Because it's Berserk.

And Zippy Ziggy was pretty entertaining if you're just after cheap laughs.

I'm loving this whole thread thought. Finding some great stuff through here.

I'm pissed that you called it "gants"
  • #173

I've watched a few animes, but my favorite by far is The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Though maybe not for the anime itself, the light novels are really what keeps me entertained. The author is really smart, and really good at what she does. All of the characters are really well defined, and the story keeps me wondering whats coming next. I highly suggest reading them, if you can find them at your local bookstore (or for free on the internet, either way)
  • #174

My jury is out on Shingeki no Kyojin. It's like some kind of post-apocalypse diesel punk-lite thing, and the art is honestly pretty terrible. But there's moments every now and then that just fucking shine. It's like it has a lot of potential that it'll never realize, but if you keep staring at it you can almost see the glory in your peripheral vision.

VERDICT WHICH IS ALSO A HUGE SPOILER:
Spoiler

I have known women who were less bipolar than the tone of this story.

Anime (in order):
Baccano!
Dennou Coil
Full Metal Alchemist
The World God Only Knows
Death Note
Persona 4 The Animation

Manga (in order):
Pokemon special (I only got past the yellow arc, for now it's on an indefinite hiatus)
The World God Only Knows (Yeah, I read the manga and watch the anime. It's just that <3)

I've actually read and watched a lot more than that, but these are the only ones that I've stuck with... The furthest I got with a dropped anime was "Reborn!" 19 episodes, but it got so rote and repetitive that I got tired of it. And someone was like "there's a genre shift in a few seasons!" I was thinking that I would never survive through that many episodes to get there.

Anime and manga is a good diversion, and also some of the best stories I've ever witnessed. I also wish I could draw like the mangaka from TWGOK, but, well, that's never going to happen because I don't practice.
  • #176

I've recently been reading Yotsubato! after buying an issue of it for my sister, who's a big fan. It's honestly the most engaging thing I've read for a while, which is odd since the main character is an endearingly underinformed 5-year old and her adventures with her adoptive father and his friends. It's where I get my avatar from, incidentally.
Also, has anyone else been following Upotte!! ? I think I can honestly attest that I, and many non-Japs who have watched it, never expected a moeblob girls-who-are-actually-rifles anime to be nearly as engaging as it is.

This is from the same studio that made Cowboy Bebop and Trigun, I think.

Edit: Nope, they only did one episode for CB. The director did Samurai Champloo.
You guys should watch this show though, if it wasn't already mentioned.

Hmmmm, well the ones I have read are(ones with 'X' means 'Done with it') :
ONE PIECE AAAWWW YEAH-UH
Rurouni Kenshin X
Full Metal Alchemist
Fairy Tail
Fruits Basket X
Cardcaptor Sakura X
Bleach X
Soul Eater
Naruto X
Ranma 1/2
Inuyasha X
D. Gray-man
Chi's Sweet Home
Blue Exorcist
Chrono Crusade
Franken Fran
Steins;Gate
Oresama Teacher
Nyankoi!
Usagi Drop
Deadman Wonderland
Arakawa Under the Bridge

I don't buy anime, but there is one exception and can you guess which one? ;)
  • #179

I've started watching Sakamichi no Apollon. Only two episodes in, but it's pretty good so far.
  • #180

My problem with this thread is the amount of posts that just give out long lists of anime/manga dumps.
Also, just looking at the synapse of Sakamichi no Apollon makes me a little sad... they fill out enough anime/manga tropes within the first two lines of the wiki page to make me cringe. (Childhood friend, main character lives away from parents, main character is kind of introverted)
  • #181

Just go and watch it anyways, dude. It's pretty good slice-of-life but with jazz music.
  • #182

Did anyone watch the stuff they ran on Toonami? Gundam Wing(among other Gundam), Outlaw Star, Sailor Moon, Dragonball Z....I remember getting home from school every weekday and watching nothing but Toonami in the afternoon.
Then they moved to Friday nights, I think? That's where they threw out Yu Yu Hakushou and Rurouni Kenshin; I remember very minor edits, if anything in most of the anime Toonami ran. Whenever I heard a swear, or saw some curb-stompping violence, I remember thinking, 'Awesome.'

But back then, anime wasn't as popular as it is now...
  • #183

Toonami good times.

Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball, Z,Kenshin and Yu Yu good old times.

Though sorry I can not agree with you on the One Piece thing. I thought it was alright at first, but then after a bit it just turned into, for lack of better word crap for me.

I don't think anime changes that much in popularity. You just have to find the right crowd of people. That's my two cents anyway.

PS: BoBoBo-BoBo-BoBoBo

The One Piece english dub sucked so much balls. Just sayin'. The manga is so good because Oda is fucking insane and plans hundreds of chapters ahead...
  • #186

Wait, how'd this turn out to be about the 09' Toonami? I'm talking about TOONAMI, where they had giant fighting space robots, guys flying around shooting lasers out of their hands, giant fighting animal robots, space pirates and suggestive themes that at the time I had no idea what and why the hell every girl in Tenchi Muyo was jonesing for him.

G-Guys? No, come on, nostalgia time!

Kaxbe, as a massive One Piece fan, I agree on both terms.
  • #187

Fucking Tenchi Muyo, holy shit. Why did I ever watch that show.

Oh yeah...
tits
  • #188

To be honest, I never watched Tenchi on Toonami. At my house in Maryland we had some Spanish channel which for some reason had anime and I watched Tenchi Muyo all in Spanish.
  • #189

I vaguely remember when they aired Tenchi Muyo, was it during the late 90s? I must have been 7 or 8 years old at that time...
  • #190

Last 90's, I was 7 or 8 at the time as well. Ugh now that I am "all grown up" I don't know how kids these days even know what cartoons and anime are.

The Haruhi Novels are great. I'm waiting on them to release the next one in English. I keep hoping that they are doing well enough that they bring over some other light novels. I'd like to see the Magical Index or Baka and Test light novels brought over.

I'm rather fond of the various Tenchi stuff myself. The original and Universe I really like. Tokyo not so much it was a little different from the other two. I actually own the entirety of the Tenchi stuff on DVD.

I enjoyed the original Dragon Ball, too, it had more innocence to it that I liked. While I can sometime empathize that somethings felt overdone in Dragon Ball Z, that didn't bother me nearly as much as the copy-paste scenarios that I only started to notice a few seasons in; it was repetitive as hell, almost as bad as Pokemon. I mean, the characters were cool and all, but you can only stomach so much of the same dribble over and over again:
1.bad guy shows up
2.someone dies
3.seek loophole to use dragon balls to get 'im back
4.seek loophole to get really really strong in a short period of time (dead guy(s) training with King Kai, for example)
5.resurrect dead guy
6.stomp bad guy (after fighting his bazillionth form)
7.repeat
This only really occurred to me around the time the Androids and Cell showed up (I WAS YOUNG AND NOT OBSERVANT!).
Though, I still enjoyed a lot of the fighting, like with Vegeta when he arrived on Earth or the fighting with Frieza.

Former Marylander. Now a Floridian. I lived in Rockville.

Also, who here is reading Kuragehime?
  • #197

Apparently I've missed the last two updates of Btooom!, and that's kind of disappointing. The manga goes through lulls every now and then, but when they want to they will set you up for one Hell of a Crowning Moment of Awesome. Their next update...Christ, I don't have any words.

I'll put it this way: someone who deserves to get the shit kicked out of him is going to get the shit kicked out of him. Imagine a fully-armed commando versus a kid with only his bare hands. Now, this kid? He has killed grown men, stronger men, smarter men, with no training and no weapons. When you see him walking towards someone and you know he's angry, you know he is going to WRECK THEIR SHIT.
  • #198

the single best thing that has happened in Btooom
