Just found a nice new series, and it's being made by KyoAni! It's called Hyouka, and is sort of a high school slice-of-life-ey anime with some mystery solving. The animation is beautiful and there were some points where I actually thought "wow, this might beat out Angel Beats for best animation I've ever seen".
  • #205

I've never really liked manga that much, don't know why.
I watched a few animes, including:
Toradora
Omamori Himari
Zero no tsukaima

As you might be able to tell, i'm a sucker for this kind of romance-comedy animes.

Don't judge me.
:nope:
  • #206

I am judging the fuck out of you.

I'm debating on whether or not to read the Evangelion manga. I've already seen the anime.
  • #207

@Jerk: The new ones or the original? I've only read and watched the original, so I have NO OPINION about the others(I think there were two spinoffs?). There's no major differences between the anime and manga, but I will not judge you whether or not you read it. :smirk:

Late to the party, yes, yes, but I'm already halfway through Thriller Bark(in the anime(a literal spider monkey, Oda? 8-D )).
But this made me cry last week like no one's business.

I read Junji Ito's Kyo again. "NEVER LEAVE ME, TADASHI, EVEN WHEN I'M AN OBESE DISEASE-INFESTED NEUROTIC WHINING FUCKWIT."

@ Kureji-Neko: I've seen all the anime, except for the newer movies. I like that Hideiki Anno's attitude has changed, and Shinji may potentially perhaps have some testicles maybe. Somewhere.

Oh, and: DO NOT PLAY THIS GAME. YOU WILL NOT WIN.

Sorry, man... it's the principle. How many seasons does that show even have? I'm definitely not a fan of shows that don't really resolve within 25ish episodes (maybe 50 tops).

I always used to have a pretty low opinion of Evangelion... not because I had watched and passed judgement, but because I didn't get into anime until high school and always thought it sucked in proxy. I'm sure it's an awesome show, but I still haven't bothered to watch it yet.

Shit, an Evangelion discussion? Where would I even begin?

It's...good. Makes it into my Top Three easily. That said, Hellsing and Berserk (manga, anyway) still outrank it to me. But since Hellsing is over and Berserk only updates when some sequence of planets align, it still has the opportunity to be The Best. And the only reason I'd consider it is because the director finally got a prescription for Prozac and realized his main character doesn't have to be as miserable as he is.

Or something like that.

The Eric "Respect Mah Authoritah" Cartman Award goes to Kohta from High School of the Dead for outstanding achievements on behalf of big-boned children.

@Moosack: Well, it does fall under 'one of the greatest series ever created' title. It's dated, but I enjoyed it; it has a lot of religious undertones(which I liked most) and hey, it's got giant fighting cyborgs! CYBORGS.
Besides, watching/reading one or two epidsodes/volumes won't kill you.

@Jerk: Well, the Shinji in the manga has more of a backbone, but he does come off as a bit of a douche sometimes...at least to me.
Oh, and: I was just teasing you. :-*

OKAY, SWITCH.
Not typically manga; it's Korean(manhwa?), but there's a series I'm really into called Laon and it revolves around Korean gumiho(nine-tailed fox) mythology. The myth goes that, once a nine-tailed fox reaches 1,000 years old, it becomes a god.
Laon, a 998 year-old nine-tailed fox, loses a bet with a god and in the process, loses all of his tails and is banished to Earth. He meets a tabloid journalist whose memories of the whereabouts of his girlfriend are strangely absent. He makes Laon promise that if he helps him find all 9 tails, Laon will help find his girlfriend. Together, with some help of his tabloid coworkers, they help Laon find his tails while trying to not get killed in the process.
Cue the gore, sexual situations, nudity, genderbend and massively high octane nightmare fuel. Gigantinormous amounts.
Oh, and it's in American bookstores, too.
I'd recommend it to horror enthusiasts....or anyone interested.

See? All I ask is a backbone. Original Shinji gets post traumatic stress disorder while he brushes his teeth. As funny as PTSD is in real life, it's not very conducive to an awesome story when your character breaks that easily. "WAAAAAH MY DADDY DOESN'T LOVE ME." Asuka is a bitch and Rei is just laconic. Despite having these flaws, it was still an outstanding mindfuck.

On the one hand, I live for high octane nightmare fuel. On the other hand, if this turns out to be about furries I WILL NEVER FORGIVE YOU.

Since I'm probably a dick, I guess that makes you a cocktease. :D
  • #213

I've watched FMA as well, not brotherhood though. Still, i can hate myself for liking the animes that have like 12 or so episodes, although Zero no Tsukaima has 4 seasons, with about 25 episodes each? still haven't finished season 4.

I wouldn't be telling you if I had a thing for furries. Isn't that a secret so dark, the brightest light can't penetrate it?
Anyway, I'm surprised the publisher gave Laon an OT rating, while Spice and Wolf(under the same publisher), is under the M rating. Tell me how Spice and Wolf, a lovely series, is Mature? Because of one page of tasteful nudity? Is that the reason? If anything, Laon should be Mature, Jeebus. Oh, sorry, I'm ranting...ahhaha-*reads*

Wh-What? N-No I'm not! Shut up, you-you...jerk. -///-

Rated M for gratuitous economic discourse.
  • #216

Psssh. If that was the reason, then people under 18 should never hear or see the world's economical discourse. XD THINK OF THE CHILDREN!
  • #217

I would rather my God-fearing white American kids see a river of gore than a single nipple.

OK, I'm a little disappointed nobody has said something about Grand Guignol Orchestra yet.

I've only read about...ten or so chapters, but I think it's flat out disturbing. In the good way.

Also, big fan of the Haruhi Suzumiya series (Way behind on that...), as well as Fullmetal Alchemist, Katekyo Hitman Reborn, and Mushishi although I have only read the fist volume of that...

Bleach started out OK, but got flat out BAD. Some of the characters are OK though...

D. Gray-Man was interesting, but I'm pretty far behind, Gurren Lagann is...meh. I only really read it for Kamina *Shrugs*.

I don't really read this for the fanservice, but I like the ideas behind it, not so much the execution, Rosario+Vampire.

Tegami Bachi is an odd one. I read it off and on. Just started Chrono Crusade.

...Wow, I'm really all over the place with these...

That's because it's boring and stupid.
  • #220

To be fair, I haven't read all that much of it, so I don't really have a feel for it yet :/

But *Shrugs* to each their own.

I read Homunculus hoping for some serious hardcore horror. Don't bother. It's just psychobabble bullshit about a guy who won't admit that he has always been and always will be a narcissist who, literally, eats his own semen.

Vinland Saga was worth reading because it has a lot in common with Berserk, though their endgame narrative about non-violence is also bullshit.

Reading Eden now. It's kind of convoluted sometimes but it's not bad science fiction, especially considering genocidal American christo-fascists. Which, admittedly, is anything but fictional.
  • #222

i found Homunculus interesting as long as we weren't exploring the psyche of the semen guy.

i've started reading Happy Project. it's... interesting. it's basically a manga about this fictional government-mandated program which Japan does in order to force young people into marriages. it's like a watered-down Liar Game focused around romansu.

I'm currently waiting for the next Ultimo book, and planning to watch Mushishi and Steins;Gate. I read Hitoshi Ariga's Megaman Megamix and Megaman Gigamix, and those were both really good.

I don't usually watch much in the way of anime, but I'm currently watching Persona 4: The Animation, having been roped into it by a friend.

I recently watched Serial Experiments lain and the rest of EVA, which I dropped a while back, and I have to say, sci-fi is a genre I should really get more interested in. I think KyoAni's new work out this autumn's gonna be pretty cool, but i want a series I can really get my teeth into. There's only so much Sword Art Online you can stand before the plotholes and fantasy fatigue set in.
