DF: The Bittersweet Fortress

Day 1

Hello and welcome to BCB's first Dwarf Fortress Game! This game will focus around the fortress of Raduktecak ("Bittersweet" in the Dwarven tongue) in the world "Tar Satheth" ("World of Hurricanes"). Below you will find my adventures in the world of Dwarf Fortress, full of death, construction, and warfare!

What is Dwarf Fortress?

Dwarf Fortress is a roguelike fantasy sandbox and quite possibly the most intricate video game ever created. It is still being updated and has plenty of features. Gameplay consists of you ordering around your dwarves. Dwarves, while intelligent enough to think on their own, will follow your every order unless they decide not to. You carve your home into the side of a mountain and fend for yourselves, trying to overcome the issues of food, water, war, and internal dispute. With this all on your mind, the game is extremely unforgiving and endless. The final judgement of your fortress will not be measured in how well you did, but in how spectacularly you died.

Day 1 - The Embark

Well, here we go. This is the world of Tar Satheth; our home from now on. Let's take a look:

Spoiler

Let's see... a glacier encroaching from the south, with a halo of landmass creating our world. On the left, a mountain range, on the right, a miles upon miles of jungle and forest. I have decided on a place for our dwarves to settle down!

Spoiler

So here we are; a heavily forested temperate landscape. Wolves, bears, and all sorts of nasties inhabit this terrain, but all sorts of riches await us; flux stones and metals in abundance! We can also tell that there is a stream passing through our area; Inchrelics, I think they call it. Odd.

I think now is the time to gather up some fresh meat dwarves for our fortress, all aptly named after people we all know!

Rex, BasketCase, Taeshi, Hero, SuperPow, Brocky, and Nik will be our initial inhabitants. More will come, don't worry! That is unless we all get ripped to shreds before any one hears of our establishment; but let's look at the bright side! I distributed our skills!

Spoiler

Rex is the Miner. He is the best at mining in the group, but is also a decent brewer (if I do say so myself). On the side, he has a couple points in mechanical engineering, but otherwise that is his skillset in a nutshell.

BasketCase is the Herbalist and Woodcutter. Her job is dangerous, but it is important. She will supply our fortress with the necessary timber and wild fruits to survive. She also minors in planting farm crops and basic architecture.

Taeshi
uses her mouth in more ways then one. She is the diplomat and trader of the group; she is highly skilled in the ways of Persuading and Lying, but also has a skill point or two in Biting. Ouch. Oh yeah, and she also can dress wounds and act as a Surgeon, if the moment calls for a doctor.

Hero will be my mining buddy. He has nearly as many points in mining as me, and also is a decent carpenter. He minors in smelting and wood-burning; I forsee his life being spent in the depths.

Brocky is our Mason. He deals in stones and stone accessories. He is also very skilled in stonecrafting, which is a completely separate skill devoted to creating all sorts of little trinkets like beer mugs, toys, and instruments out of Stone. Everybody likes Stone.

SuperPow
is our food source. He majors in planting crops and catching fish, while having some skill in Cooking also. He better stay away from Basket as she does her stuff outside >.>

Nik, as always, is a jack of all trades. He has minor skills in Blacksmithing, Gem Cutting, Pottery, Weaving, and Butchering. He is most skilled in Bone Carving, because he a sick child.

I think that is it; we are ready to play! We will continue on Day 2; be ready for some more interesting stuff to happen. Setting up is always a pain! Highlights tomorrow will be checking out the personalities of each of our dwarves, setting up our home, and trying to survive our first day in the wilderness!

I'd be lying if I said this wasn't a fun read :)

Thanks jak! I'll be throwing you into the fray when the first migrants come; your blood will be spilled too!

That might take a couple days, depending on how I want to time this stuff out. Not sure if how much I want to get done before each break; I don't want it to take forever to get anything interesting happen, but at the same time I don't want to play so long before updating this thread that you get lost in what's happening.

Ah well! Thanks!
  • #3

I have no idea what this even is, but it looks neat. Umm... good job Rex? I think? Would a good job be appropriate here?
  • #4

Its a game! A fun one, at that. Thanks :) I guess so!

Day 2

Welcome back! Today we get started; but before we do that, we should get to know our dwarves! Don't you agree? I am going to assume "yes", since you aren't the poor bastard playing this game and thus have no say!

If you recall, we started with seven dwarves. Rex, BasketCase, Taeshi, Hero, SuperPow, Brocky, and Nik are their names. Here are some screenshot of their bios; take a look. Please ignore the inconsistencies with he/she; I had to do some hacky-hacky to set their genders and not all of the text changes to reflect this.

Spoiler

An important thing to note is that dwarves live much longer then Humans. The average age of a dwarf is between 150 and 170 years. So no, you are not all nearing the ends of your lives. Well, not the end of your natural lifespans, at least.

Moving on, we will probably want to check out the scenery and decide on a place to carve out and live. The problem here is that I can't very well show you the entire world in one or even a dozen screenshots. Instead, there is this neat little tool call the DFMA; it will take my world and put it on a browser for you to look around in. Here is the link:

Bittersweet - 251 Early Spring by Rex Nex

To look around, just drag the screen. You will see a area where the numbers 155 are located, with a up and down arrow. Those arrows indicate z-level, or slices in the terrain. Going up a zlevel will take you a block upward in the terrain, while going down will take you a block downward. Think of it like a Minecraft map that you can only see one layer of blocks at a time.

I have picked a area for us, and, as you can see, Rex and Hero are already working on digging it out. The brown tiles indicate the areas I have selected for them to dig; the brown trees are the trees are the ones BasketCase is busy chopping down. Hopefully she won't break a nail or something. The rest of the crew is still hanging up at the starting zone, waiting for me to finish up a meeting place. Oh, and that question mark is me. I'm already confused on what the fuck I am doing. At least Hero has his job down.

Some of the stuff I have them working on is crucial; a plot of underground farmland, a big area for garbage to be dumped, etc. We can get some housing up too; these people need to sleep! Here is some additions I have made, and as you can see, Rex and Hero made some progress. The yellow "X" is just my cursor.

I think that concludes day 2! We got some stuff done today; basic fort planning is done! I might be doing more then one update a day, too, depending on if I have time!

  • #18

  • #19

Its all randomly generated, I swear!

And this is yours, basket :)

  • #20

BWAHAHAHA XD oh that is funny. i really hope that it is random generated XD
  • #21

Well, it's not like dwarf females would ever be hot or anything. Hell, most games you can't distinguish which gender is which. Maybe the more manly you are, the more attractive you are.
  • #22

Dingdingding! We got a winner! :D
  • #23

Dwarfs, where the men are men and the females are men too! XD
  • #24

This looks awesome, Rex :D Best of luck to you and your colony.

(I want in... *sigh*)
  • #25

Then you'll be in!
  • #26

Which version are you playing anyway
  • #27

0.31.25, the latest.
  • #28

Wanted to comment on how AWESOME this is. Seriously cool man.

Can't wait to see who succumbs to the first mood.
  • #29

Can I be in? Pretty please?
  • #30

I vote you add Esalaka to it.

Just kidding. I just wanted to mess with lurker boy.

Anyways, I wouldn't mind being in it if you need more people.

I actually love playing DF, for your information.

It's so much fun
  • #33

Never said you didn't like it silly. I just wanted you to not lurk the thread. :P

Anyways, Rex, try not to make me fat.
  • #34

Nicknames one of the two cows I brought with us "MintyLimeGreen"
  • #35

That cow will eat every dwarf in the fortress. Just letting you know. >:(

But seriously, I'm interested in this thing now that I've done a little research on it.
  • #36

I'm glad! Its a really great game once you get the hang of the graphics and controls 8-D

Alright, need to stop procrastinating. Onwards and upwards!

Ps major respect points for figuring out how the fuck to work this game! so confusing!
  • #41

I shall update this soon©! I had a crash mid-game last time, and I kind of didn't want to do it all over again. Damn me and my low patience. Definitely will update it, just a matter of hours. Or minutes. Or whatever.

Chris, you will be there!

  • #43

Oh man I have a couple of friends who play this game. Tried to get into it but lost interest after here was no more next buttons in the tutorial. haha, can't wait to see more.
  • #44

Hot damn this looks fun. I just may have to try DF. Hell, super RPG's are a must. Fallout 1 was what got me into it. Can't wait too see how it comes out.
  • #45

Oh how did i not see this thread yesterday?

Anyway very good so far rex your writing is hilarious and the character bio's had me rolling on the floor laughing. I wouldn't mind joining up with your merry band of dwarfs too :D i don't really have any preference as to what profession you make me.

Strike the Earth!

I still haven't played much of the newest version, but I've played 0.28.181.40d for hours. I even, somehow, managed to construct a nearly entirely above-ground fortress (I had to dig in to get stone, but that was about it) on a pretty brutal map. Unfortunately, not much ever got done. Put the walls up, put in the retractable bridge over the moat, got food and booze going, but only got 3 immigrants (the lucky 3 that ever made it to the fort before being slaughtered by the herd of skeletal whales).

Anyway, I call dibs on getting the first immigrant soap maker named after me regardless of gender!
  • #47

I was able to get a whole walled city + castle built above ground, and it was totally worth it...until I fucked it up and made a wall attach to a scalable hill. And the monsters came pouring in...

good times...
