Well, at least the game recognises you all for what you are.

Figures, I've been following this comic since January 2010 and I finally break down to join the forms due to a Dwarf Fortress thread.

Day 3

Well, after much delay, Day 3 is here!

I'm going to do be doing this one a bit differently; recording and making this post while playing the game. That should keep things fresh or something...

Right now, the entire crew is working on bringing all our odds and ends into the new stockpile; an area I set up on what was originally going to be the trash heap. I wanted to bring all the stuff indoors so, if it rained, we wouldn't be left with rotting wood and spoiled food. I'll also show you guys the current progress on the fort:

As you can see, Rex and Hero have came across some rocks; the reason you only see a few in the back of the fort is because it is the first stone they have came across. Thus far, everything has been easy-to-dig sand, but now Mudstone has been located. Mudstone takes longer to dig through, but leaves behind... well, mudstone. Mudstone is a decent building material, so we will be keeping it!

Meanwhile I took a look at the local wildlife; we have deer, several species of fish... and a giant panda?! If this thing sticks around, I think we will be seeing dwarves riding armored war-pandas into battle!

Right now the dwarves are taking their first break; superpow is getting drunk and Taeshi and Nik are eating some mushrooms. Nothing too exciting... Meanwhile I have been planning the next floor of the fortress; this floor will be devoted to the craft of woodcutting; here we have two 3x3 areas to house our Carpenter's Workshop and a Wood Furnace. I want to get this up ASAP in order to create some beds for our dwarves. A few nights of sleeping on the ground will get them all in a bad mood!

I probably should of mentioned we brought some livestock with us; two water buffalo. Both are female, so breeding is out of the question, but we can let them get nice and fat and butcher them for their meat! Or keep them around to scare off any pesky wildlife, considering we have no defenses whatsoever. The only self-defense in our entire fortress is Taeshi's biting skill. I don't think that counts as a reliable goblin-deterrent

Let's have a look at the finished progress of today's work:

A WarPanda would be the most badass mount to exist. 8-D
  • #58

I'm not too sure why, but this is fun to read :D

I had almost an entire level devoted to wood storage in one of my forts once, I don't think the elves were happy :P
Once you have the materials just set up layers of traps they work pretty well against early ambushes and the occasional thieves.

I want to stay away from preset traps. They make everything but full sieges kind of petty and nothing more then an annoyance; takes a bit out of the game.

I will be using by own traps, but not ones you can just place and forget about. Drowning chambers and all that :)

Anyone have any suggestions on any changes they would like to the Let's Play? More/less pictures, longer/shorter updates, different kind of narration, etc.
  • #61

Just that going day by day will end up taking a long time, perhaps going by month and having little 'journal' entries for the important or silly events? Or a lot of entries if important stuff is happening?

Of course these are just suggestions and I suggest you go at whatever pace you feel is best.
  • #62

^ I agree with Nik the first 1-2 years in DF can often be uneventful.
so rex what kind of defense plans did you have in mind for the fort? aside from drowning chambers.

The best defense for dwarves... is dwarves ;)

I plan to use magma, cave-ins, and of course, dwarves!

They aren't really day by day... its 2-3 months per update. A DF day is only a few seconds. But I can change that to be seasonal updates, if you so desire :)

I suggest we build a magma cannon or a magma moat.

Seasonal or yearly updates would be best in my opinion.
  • #65

seasonal sounds like the best option. not too short not too long

if you want, I'll be your warrior. I WILL BRING YOU THE HEADS OF A THOUSAND SLAIN GIGANTIC PANDAS MY LIEGE.

Spoiler

also, as a last ditch defense when we are down to our last dwarf and without any other options, I vote we use a TNCS (ThermoNuclear Cat-Splosion)

video and explanation provided by codysseus.

Quote

The thermonuclear catsplosion is achieved through gathering a bunch of cats together, going into the game files and changing their internal temperatures to some ridiculous number. Then they explode. :D

it also spreads a wave of fire and destruction across the dwarven lands, killing and burning all in it's path.

Haha I've seen that vid he sent the cats temp to 40000 and embarked with 187 cats
  • #68

I think thats a good idea. I actually think this will work good; the start up was slow and the time between updates was short, so you will know just exactly how things have been set up and won't be confused when I change the updates to seasonal. I think thats a good idea! Now I just have to pay attention to when the seasons change 8-)
  • #69

Just set it to save seasonally. Its hard to miss the entire game freezing up on you while it saves
  • #70

Point taken.
  • #71

Wow, I only found this just now because of a mix of school and the internet being down.
Anyway It looks like your doing a pretty good job. A very entertaining read indeed.

Thank you Rex, keep up the good work.

“SuperPow likes carp for their protruding mouths” = First dwarf to get eaten by a carp
“When possible he prefers to consume sunshine” = epic dwarf
  • #73

So how is the next update coming Rex? Work keeping you down?
  • #74

I'm not home at the moment, so in a way, yes. I've been gone for the last three or so days and will be gone until tomorrow night; will be updating it then.

Hey Rex bud I'm curious what makes ya think Taeshi doesn't deserve her bedroom.
  • #76

Damn, you're making me want to dig out my copy of DF.
(Dig?? Get it? GET IT?!?)
