Is it okay to make fun of rape?

Boy, some people really get anxious when rape is made fun of. Hell, there's a site really fervent on claiming that rape isn't funny at all. So the big question, is it okay to make fun of rape?

No. Just no.
  • #4

Just as it said, jokes are funny rape is not. Therefore a joke about rape can't be all that funny now can it?

Is it ok to make fun of child molestation?

Is it ok to make fun of orphans?

Is it ok to make fun of cancer?

I don't think so.

One of the specific rules in Random Chat was: "No rape jokes, rape 'actions', rape role-playing, or whatever gay shit you're thinking of doing." Now think about why the rule had to be that specific. :smirk:

Also, this thread.

It depends on the context, really. I personally believe that in the realm of humor that nothing is sacred, no joke is "too soon". A joke is either funny or not funny.

Wisely put. Anything can be funny as long as everyone understands that is is a joke.

An interesting read is the Penny Arcade comic where they mentioned rape and people got really annoyed with them. The thing was it wasn't even really the punchline, or anything really. It was just offhandedly mentioned.

So yeah, generally you need to know the people you are joking around with or else people may just get really pissed with you.

While it does depend on the context in certain cases, I believe it's just a subject that should generally be avoided when it comes to humor. Also, if Random Chat had at least that standard to abide by, I think most functional rational people should as well.

:D

Plus that thing about being raped to sleep by dickwolves on Penny Arcade was hilarious.

I'm pretty sure I made that rule because Random Chat couldn't fucking handle anything. If you gave them an inch, they took that inch and sodomized you with it. They demonstrated again and again and again the exact reasons they didn't deserve the same freedoms as the rest of the forum.

People are too sensitive.

I personally cannot go even a few minutes while watching Law and Order Special Victims Unit without making at least one rape joke.

That's a terrible standard. "Hahaha, yeah they sure worked me over good! It's okay guys, no don't worry about it haahah!"
That doesn't change the fact that its still wrong.
  • #15

I was thinking more along the lines of "haha, don't worry though I slit his throat and pissed on his grave."

Basically what Kaxbe said. Admittedly I think people can make jokes about it, but if someone gets offended, you don't really have a right to say "suck it up"???? Since it's not a nice subject either way you slice it.
  • #17

According to George Carlin?

Yes. Rape is fucking hilarious.

Just not all of the time. It depends on the circumstances, and how the joke is told.

The answer is yes to all of those cause kids through college students do it in wide number. Whether or not something is offensive doesn't stop people from making it into a joke, they will still do it if it them. There was a girl who committed suicide in my district during high school because she got picked on for being in foster care after being molested by step father. Is it the greatest form of humor, no, but some fucker out there will find surprise butt sex funny for some reason

Rape is in no way funny, it's something that causes emotional trauma to those who are subjected to it. But since I cannot deny the existence of rape jokes, it's better to tell them to those who find it funny rather than those who don't or who are victims of it. But it's much better not to make fun of it at all cause it's funny in a sense that 9/11 is funny.
  • #23

It's just plane wrong.
  • #24

Can we agree prison rape is unilaterally hilarious? I mean, you get all these guys who thought they were so badass on the outside finding out the hard way that there are bigger, stronger men than they who are willing to prove it in the most visceral way possible. You hardly even need a context to that.

Why.

I can make fun of death, and I had a person die in my arms last month.

It's all context and purpose. I'm not going to be offended because I'm morally obligated, or society frowns upon it. Funny is funny, end of story. If you need to take a serious stand on stopping jokes on rape, you really need think about your priorities in life.

If it is understood as a joke, I don't see a problem. It's exactly the same that making jokes about racism, sexism, or pedophiles. We all know those things are wrong. But we are joking, What's the matter?

One person's perceived offensiveness is another man's sense of humor.

Humor in bad taste is still humor. Some will like it, others won't. You're get crazy people who will insist that joking about issues like rape means you support it (a fallacy, really), and you'll probably piss people off who have been raped or know someone who has. To me, if the joke's funny I have no issue with it (I have a relative who was raped, and I've made one around her that cracked her up), but if you're going to do it, know your audience. If you crack joke about in front of the wrong person or in the wrong situation, it WILL backfire, and that's your fault.

I guess I can just sum my thoughts up as "proceed with caution."

As long as its nothing that somehow has an emotional impact on one of the people youre talking to, you can joke about it...nothing wrong with that
  • #38

Rape being funny or not all depends on the situation, in my opinion. If it was just me and a couple friends and, say, we saw two squirrels humping, and one of my friends started cracking rape jokes about them, I'd most likely laugh/chuckle/giggle. If me and a couple friends and, say, we saw a man dry humping a little girl, or if one day on the news there was a report of a man stealing kids and raping them, I can't say I'd be laughing. Or with that "Rapist climbing in yo' window" song or whatever. If I just saw the actual news report, I'd be all "OH SNAP". D: But if I just saw the song I'd be all "Lolol dafuqqq".

See? Based on the situation. ;u;
  • #39

What Sparkfur said. You can joke about ANYTHING. You just have to put it into the right context in order to get the most humor out of a joke. If you don't think people are going to be making jokes about 9/11 decades from now, you're just being dumb.

I don't think it's a case of everyone understanding it's a joke. There are many cases where I've heard a rape joke and was like, "really?" because it was tasteless (not that most rape jokes are tasteful, but I digress).

I believe you're referring to the Dickwolf comic? Honestly, I was never that big a fan of Penny Arcade. I think that most video game webcomics are complete crap. But then I saw people getting mad about that. I didn't see anything wrong with it until I realized that the joke of that comic was pretty much "I don't care that you get raped all the time". Hoo boy.

It's a good example of what I was talking about earlier.

If people are able to make Holocaust jokes, I dont think rape jokes are going to be seen as that big of a problem

Like everyones saying, its comes down to timing
If youre with some friends and the moods right, a rape joke might get some laughs
If youre with a friend who has dealt with rape, you probably dont want to make a joke
Pretty much that simple :smirk:

Also, @everyone that mentioned George Carlin:
I love you all :-*

hmmm.

Yeah, their response was really, really stupid and childish.

But for the original joke it was largely overblown and the joke wasn't really about the rape. Just people saw that word and got angry.

Edit: This gives a nice look at the penny arcade thing if you want a nice read

I just personally don't think it's funny really at all, it could be a great joke but if the punch line is having someone violated in the worst way possible then I really don;t find it humorous. Though I have made rape jokes for shock value, but it still kinda made me feel sick afterwards.
  • #46

Maybe I am a huge hypocrite, but I think it's ok to joke about anything, including rape, but actual occurrences of it make my blood boil.

In all honesty, the joke was a bad, unfunny one (much like most of Penny Arcade's comics).
