Is it ok to make fun of child molestation?
Is it ok to make fun of orphans?
Is it ok to make fun of cancer?
I don't think so.

Wisely put. Anything can be funny as long as everyone understands that is is a joke.

So yeah, generally you need to know the people you are joking around with or else people may just get really pissed with you.

While it does depend on the context in certain cases, I believe it's just a subject that should generally be avoided when it comes to humor. Also, if Random Chat had at least that standard to abide by, I think most functional rational people should as well.

Plus that thing about being raped to sleep by dickwolves on Penny Arcade was hilarious.
I'm pretty sure I made that rule because Random Chat couldn't fucking handle anything. If you gave them an inch, they took that inch and sodomized you with it. They demonstrated again and again and again the exact reasons they didn't deserve the same freedoms as the rest of the forum.

I personally cannot go even a few minutes while watching Law and Order Special Victims Unit without making at least one rape joke.

That doesn't change the fact that its still wrong.

Yes. Rape is fucking hilarious.
Just not all of the time. It depends on the circumstances, and how the joke is told.

The answer is yes to all of those cause kids through college students do it in wide number. Whether or not something is offensive doesn't stop people from making it into a joke, they will still do it if it them. There was a girl who committed suicide in my district during high school because she got picked on for being in foster care after being molested by step father. Is it the greatest form of humor, no, but some fucker out there will find surprise butt sex funny for some reason

Why.
I can make fun of death, and I had a person die in my arms last month.
It's all context and purpose. I'm not going to be offended because I'm morally obligated, or society frowns upon it. Funny is funny, end of story. If you need to take a serious stand on stopping jokes on rape, you really need think about your priorities in life.

I don't think it's a case of everyone understanding it's a joke. There are many cases where I've heard a rape joke and was like, "really?" because it was tasteless (not that most rape jokes are tasteful, but I digress).

I believe you're referring to the Dickwolf comic? Honestly, I was never that big a fan of Penny Arcade. I think that most video game webcomics are complete crap. But then I saw people getting mad about that. I didn't see anything wrong with it until I realized that the joke of that comic was pretty much "I don't care that you get raped all the time". Hoo boy.
It's a good example of what I was talking about earlier.

Like everyones saying, its comes down to timing
If youre with some friends and the moods right, a rape joke might get some laughs
If youre with a friend who has dealt with rape, you probably dont want to make a joke
Pretty much that simple
Also, @everyone that mentioned George Carlin:
I love you all

But for the original joke it was largely overblown and the joke wasn't really about the rape. Just people saw that word and got angry.
Edit: This gives a nice look at the penny arcade thing if you want a nice read

In all honesty, the joke was a bad, unfunny one (much like most of Penny Arcade's comics).
