Chapter 69: At Loose Ends

Ideally, Daisy would have gotten over Mike a long time ago, like after "Love My Way". But no, she still persists in fantasies of Mike (e.g. in "Pillow Talk"). It's sad that she still pines after Mike, despite being attached to Abbey. At least Sue is happy for Mike, even if Daisy isn't.

Well, that was unexpected: Mike only has one night with Sandy! I really thought it'd be like a week or something. Figures that Sandy's parents would only allow her to fly on business. One night doesn't seem anywhere near long enough to test Mike and Sandy's relationship in any significant way, unless something completely unforeseen happens. So maybe nothing will change there. Maybe Mike will float on a cloud all through the holidays.

Typo alert, second-to-last panel: 'believe'. As Mina would say, "Betta get that fixed!"

It has been fixed for a few hours now, maybe your site still has the old page up?

The first time I loaded the strip was about two hours ago, and the error was there then. And when I made my post, I did a hard refresh just to be sure the error hadn't been corrected. So I guess you must've fixed it right afterwards! Oops!
  • #203

Daisy's eyes look so cute in that 3rd panel.

I really wish Daisy would get over Mike though.. I feel bad for Abbey, he knew before that she liked Mike so he must be able to see how excited Daisy is getting and how sad she is knowing Sandy is coming.

Pretty page though! :D

It might also have to do with the fact that Daisy was good friends with Sandy before she moved.

That's the other thing: Sandy moved away from Roseville without really saying anything to Daisy. So Daisy feels that she was forgotten by Sandy, and she still feels hurt about that. Which just makes the fact that Sandy's coming to see Mike that much worse for her.

I also feel bad for Abbey, seeing as he's in a relationship where he's the second-best choice and his girlfriend still has the hots for Mike. And he knows it. Man, Abbey deserves a better relationship than that. Still, Daisy was the girl he was trying for, so I guess I can't blame him for wanting to stay with her. I foresee they'll eventally break up, though.
  • #206

I think I remember somewhere it said that a part of the reason that Daisy was infatuated with Mike (beside him being the hottest cat on the block) was because of Sandy loving him. Daisy was picking up Sandy's 'scraps', so to speak.
Is this right? I think she was talking to Augustus about it.

Actually Daisy states she hated Mike a bit back then. She only began liking Mike after Sandy left.

That Daisy, always jealous of somebody. Mike, Sandy, Tess, it's all the same in the end.

skmojo, you mentioned Daisy talking to Augustus about the subject. Here it is. Of course, Daisy says the same thing there: she didn't realize why Sandy liked Mike so much until after she'd moved away. At first, Daisy disliked Mike for taking her best friend away from her. And when she did get to know Mike, Lucy was always there to steal Mike's attention. And then later on Sandy made her reappearance. To Daisy, it's always seemed like no one ever gave her a chance. That's why she still occasionally ponders Augustus, even if she thinks he's a creeper. Augustus liked her for who she was. And of course, Abbey does too. But poor Daisy's been fixated on Mike since like fourth grade.

All this got me thinking again about the possibilities of BCB and how things might play out from here. I might have to write up my current wild speculations and post them in the proper thread sometime. Damn you Taeshi for drawing such an engaging story!
  • #210

Thanks wacko, for finding it.
Thanks to Taeshi too, for writing such an interesting story.
  • #211

Tess is sure regretting her badassness now, isn't she?

So think Mike will even get to talk to Sandy after the show? Or do you think she'll be to busy to? He only mentioned having a ticket and not, say, taking her out to dinner before/afterwards or anything, so I'm wondering just how much time she actually has for him. And he's so wrapped up in the fantasy of getting to see her in person after so long, that he might not even notice it's more or less going to be a one sided affair (assuming this theory is right, of course).

And just what's making Abbey smile so much in panel 3, anyway? Just seeing Mike and Sue doesn't seem like cause enough to go from indifference to joy, especially for Abbey...

He's just so happy to see the guy his girlfriend truly loves, who always takes his advice and ignores the feelings of those who are not his love interest.

Yeah, I don't know.

That's Stacy. Admittedly, she looks kind of odd in that panel. She also seems to have popped up out of nowhere; I might've expected Amaya to still be standing beside Sue as in panels 2 and 4.

Amaya is besides Sue to the farthest of Mike. Why would she magically switch places?
  • #216

It's nice to see some rare side characters, like Amaya and Stacy. Haven't seen them all since Pillow Talk. :P

I'm surprised at Mike. It's just one night, and Sandy has to do it for business. Good luck actually managing to being able to spend time with her after the modeling show. His naivety is rather...herm. Just sayin'.

Alright, there's an intriguing plot development, there. Daisy actually misses Sandy and wishes she would be able to see her. I never got the distinct impression that they were that close, even before Mike kind of started hogging all of her attention. Interesting; I really hope that takes us somewhere.

If Daisy hasn't kept in touch with Sandy why would she have any reason to have told her?

But from Mike's point of view, Amaya is just to the right of Sue in those panels, and... oh, never mind. It doesn't matter that much. :D Easy enough to say they got separated a bit and Stacy just walked into the vacant space.

Yeah, I was thinking that Mike might not be allowed to see Sandy after the fashion show due to show security, or her parents hovering around her, or something to that effect. So much for spending time with Sandy; Mike might well get cheated of hope again. Of course Sandy feels the need to hide the relationship from her parents, because they'd disapprove of it, but on the other hand she does need to spend time with Mike when possible, or the relationship just becomes a farce. And if Sandy isn't able to personally see Mike, then where does that leave him? Would he still keep grasping onto that slender thread of hope, or would he start to reconsider the whole long-distance relationship thing?

MiwAuturu said:

Daisy is referring to the fact that the person she considered her best friend in third grade (Sandy) failed to tell her she was moving to Rickter. As a person, Sandy can be pretty flaky sometimes, and because of her past actions (dropping Daisy for Mike, and not telling her she was moving), Daisy even now still feels hurt and ignored and forgotten. As a matter of fact, Sandy doesn't even really remember Daisy anymore.

Has anybody else always harbored an irrational hatred of Stacy for the crime of being completely irrelevant? Or is that just me?

Actually, I think it was the combined crimes of being irrelevant and looking similar to Amaya before the comic was in color.

Can't say I've ever had an irrational hatred of Stacy, but she does seem even less relevant to the comic than Katie.

Soo.. Aside from the Daisy angst(and anti-Sandy fuel), anyone else notice Paulo's looking pretty mad at Mike? What's up with that?
  • #228

I actually think Stacy is pretty cool. I think sometime back on FormSpring it was said she played roleplaying games online, so she gets my support.
Also, buy a ticket and confront her Daisy!
  • #229

@RC: It's because he knows Lucy and Daisy are both crushing on Mike. I guess he sees Mike as a person who plays with others' feelings. This has come up before if I remember properly, though that may have been Abbey who commenting on Mike's indifference.

Considering the lack of physical violence, I don't think Lucy told him about what happened last chapter.

Carch, I'm not even sure If lucy is even hanging at the table anymore. So I don't think paulo will hunt down lucy and force out of her what is wrong because he has Jasmine.
  • #231

I know, I was just pointing out that whatever Paulo's angry about wasn't the incident at the end of December. Knowing Lucy, there's a good chance she is avoiding the table, and Mike's statement could very well have made her feel uncomfortable with the rest of the group.
  • #232

I think Lucy wants mike to be happy, even from a distance. I guess she did listen to Augustus's words.

I think Paulo still doesn't quite believe that Sandy is actually Mike's girlfriend, and is kind of jealous of Mike. (Paulo only moved to Roseville in fifth grade, so he's never met Sandy. All he's seen is a smoking-hot picture of her.)

Stacy is just a slutty Amaya.

  • #238

Let me guess...no adult supervision whatsoever at the party. I wonder what Tess is going to do, once she's drunk.

I see that Lucy is not there at the party. For shame. At least David dancing with Mike makes for it (God, that's hilarious...).

Even when Daisy is cuddling up with Abbey, he still can't focus on anything but his crappy past. I get that that's what the chapter is about, primarily, but still...in my experience, I'm pretty damn focused if a girl starts dancing with me. :P

I see Paulo is still wearing those black gloves. He and Jasmine definitely look like they're having fun. Same with David, being all Davidsexual and dragging Mike into a dance. Not at all surprised at seeing Tess down a bottle of wine either. She has a little bit of a drinking problem.

I have to say, Taeshi, that you draw vehicle interiors quite well. That view in the sixth panel, for example, is fantastic. Good on you for expanding your drawing perspectives!

Looks like we're flashing back to when Abbey and Molly were first taken in by their foster parents five years ago. Janet's statement in the last panel is reminiscent of panels 15-16 of this page in "Rising Temperature". So clearly Charlotte must've spent some time in the hospital. Following that though, I don't know why Child Protective Services didn't keep Kevin and Janet up to date on Charlotte's status.

NintendoSegaSonyGuy said:

There seemed to be adults at last year's party. Don't know if that's the case this time.
  • #240

I'm loving the way Sue just blends into the background on this page. She just seems perfectly content to watch the shenanigans unfold around her.

As for why Child Protective Services didn't keep Kevin and Janet in the loop, that's actually standard if the kids have been put up for adoption. But since I don't think Kevin and Janet have formally adopted them, the only reason I can think of is the mom doesn't want them informed.
  • #241

As soon as I read "Let's dance" I couldn't shake David Bowie out of my head :nope:

Also, as interesting as Abbey's backstory is, I kinda wish he could keep his head on the present. Also, Molly does look kind of the same in the past as in the present.

I think.
  • #242

She really did draw the vehicle quite well. I wonder if it gave her any trouble. Some of the artists of webcomics I read mention that they cannot draw cars very well, but can make Da Vinci look like a punk when doing facial expressions.

Anyway, you deserve some, :applause: , for your artistic efforts. Very nicely done.

Now try drawing a sports car. 8-)

David gonna dance remind me of this pic

And check dat Jasmine swingin her arms in the air. Wavin em around like she just don care.
  • #244

This chapter makes me feel really bad for Abbey! It just makes you want to hug the poor guy...
  • #245

If a mild bop makes Molly freak out, God help her the day she finds her foster parents mid-foreplay. Janet looks like a spanker.
  • #246

@RedJack
That's Rachel dancing with David (in the link), not Jasmine.

Anyway, about the new page...Molly is going to have one miserable life if she can't handle seeing one little BOP to the face. I understand how traumatic it was seeing her father do that to her mother, but let's put it into perspective. Molly is a little who goes to Elementary School, correct? Think about how many immature kids get into fights at that age. Bullies, and what not (we know that there'll be bullies, because this is Bittersweet Candy Bowl). Either Molly will burst into tears every time or she'll try to break up the fight (actually, that might lead to some interesting moments). Hell, the day Abbey and Mike were fighting, she ended up breaking up the fight.

Oh boy, is Molly suffering from trauma or what. Poor girl.

I had a little trouble following the dialogue in the last panel. At first I thought Kevin was speaking to Janet in the first word balloon. Apparently it's actually Janet talking to herself?

Janet's eyes keep reminding me of Johnny Hurricane's eyes in that one pic of him. Especially in panel 6.

Molly is five years old in this flashback, and she's now ten ("Rising Temperature" occurred just after her 10th birthday). I think Molly's become a more confident girl while in Kevin and Janet's care, and more willing to stand up for herself and Abbey, but she's still traumatized by the things Abraham did to Charlotte when she was younger. Maybe she'd benefit from therapy at some point, like her brother did. (I don't know if Abbey is still attending those therapy sessions?)
