Yup, Abbey blames himself. And despite Janet's words, he'll probably continue to do so. Because people are like that.
Chapter 69: At Loose Ends

Not saying it's his fault, but I can see why he would blame himself. Knowing your mother confronted your abusive father over something you said to her isn't something that's easy to live with. In his mind, the blame is placed on himself for opening his mouth, though logically the blame rests on Abraham for being an abusive dick.
If anything, he should be somewhat proud, as clearly he got his mother to stand up for herself. It's just too bad it turned out the way it did. I just hope Charlotte doesn't blame Abbey for his slip of the tongue. It's really the last thing he needs.

So Abbey's mother is apparently alive?
I can understand Abbey's mixed feelings though. Like if his mother was alive, why didn't she want to see Abbey and Molly after she got out of the hospital? We've already discussed the possibility that Charlotte felt her children were better off with Kevin and Janet, but Abbey will need to hear the story for himself.

Honestly at this point we still don't technically have proof she's alive, 'going to see her' could mean going to see her tombstone. Seems a bit cliché, but who knows.
- #304
- 27 February 2012 - 05:34 PM
There is also the possibility that she is still in a coma.
- #305
- 27 February 2012 - 06:58 PM
Both good points. I guess we'll have to see how it plays out.
Abbey going to visit a tombstone would be depressing, but with seven pages left, it's as likely an ending as any other.

If she's not alive and awake, I would find it odd if Janet suggested staying the night, since that would presumably mean getting a hotel room a few hour's drive away when I would assume, based on my total lack of experience with such things, that the amount of time beyond which there can no significant additional effect from prolonging their visit to see a tombstone or Charlotte in a coma is less than the amount of time beyond which it becomes unreasonable to make it more than a day trip (unless they plan to visit the graveyard, then spend a while sightseeing and going to amusement parks and such). I'm pretty sure Charlotte is at least conscious.
- #307
- 27 February 2012 - 10:18 PM
I actually don't find it unreasonable for Janet to suggest spending the night a few hours away, even if Abbey's mother is dead and buried. Janet probably had the thought that she and Abbey could do a few other things besides visit Charlotte, but Abbey said he was only going for his mother, so he preferred to do it all in one day.

Yup, Abbey probably scampered over to Cynthia's place, as seen in "New Beginnings". The question is, what happened after that? Did he confront his father, or simply stand there and do nothing? We do know that Abraham never hurt his children physically.
Fortunately, Molly seems to have missed what went on between Abraham and Charlotte. So Abbey didn't have to shield her. It does seem that Abbey didn't get involved in the argument, but simply hid around the corner until Abraham had left.

Not much to say about this page. Although I suppose one might wonder how Abbey guessed that his father would go to Cynthia's townhouse. Then again, where else would Abraham go, after fighting with Charlotte over Cynthia?

It's interesting to see how Abbey acts in the presence of his father: "STOP IT! ...Sir." He's afraid of unleashing Abraham's temper on himself, yet he courageously interposes himself between his father and the car, to prevent him from making a clean getaway. What will Abraham do next? Will he lay a finger on his son? Walk around to the other side of the car? Walk away and take a bus? Abraham might not have ever hit his children, but would pushing Abbey aside even count as hurting him physically?
Poor Cynthia. She's getting dumped by a cheater who likely would have started abusing her at some later point, yet she still wants to be with him.
Four pages left, I can't stand the suspense. Might Charlotte's fate not be fully resolved until a later chapter?

Abraham is such a badass he can make skid marks going in reverse.
Oh and Abbey is cool I guess

Well, that was a surprise! I didn't expect Abbey to have notified the police. So that's what the note Molly handed to the neighbour was for.
Abraham seems disturbingly cold and unemotional in dealing with his son, it's kind of freaky.
The same thing was shown on page 2 of "New Beginnings". I guess Abraham really was travelling that fast in reverse and then slammed on the brakes.

Cynthia ain't got no legs in that last page!
Anyway, Abbey has stones, I'll give him that. Funny, used to really despise him. Now I can't remember why I ever hated him. But really, that's not going to be pleasant. I think he's going to be scarred for a long time after that.

Wow, is Abraham a manipulative dick or what. Way to make your son feel bad for what you did, you abusive cheater.
(where is the Cheater Squad when you really need them)
(no wonder Abbey carries that guilt)
Also, I see this chapter has gone from 32 pages to 48!

Abbey actually looks cute in a hoodie, albeit it's still a bit jarring to me since we haven't seen him wear clothes much prior to the current storyline. Though in the first panel, he almost looks like an emo kid.
He definitely seems surprised that Daisy is accompanying him on the trip! For that matter, I'm surprised too, since the decision to go was made the previous night, after the party. Perhaps Janet invited Daisy to come along with, since she showed clear concern for Abbey at the party. Nor should I be surprised that Daisy would accept the invitation: she supported Abbey when he first went to see the therapist, and she'll continue to support him now.
Hope people enjoy another month of Abbey, because I will.

Aw, cute Molly. Who can possibly resist anything she requests?
ChewySmokey, that's a good guess. Though I'm surprised Molly doesn't ask to see Mommy herself. I would suggest she intuitively knows Charlotte is dead, yet I wonder if it takes 16 pages to visit a gravesite.
And the comic is only 'early' because everyone else changed to daylight savings time and we didn't.

I seriously doubt she's dead, that would most definitely be something that the authorities would notify them of when it happens, so there wouldn't have been any mystery to her whereabouts... or at least I would think so.
Daylight savings, what the hell is that?

I hate the say it Chewy, but if they've gone through the foster system at all, the chances of them not being notified aren't exactly low. In this country, the mother would have a right to privacy, even at the expense of her kids. If for some reason she has given them up for adoption, then Janet most likely jumped through a considerable number of hoops before she found her.
Since Taeshi is one of the few authors who has been able to surprise me lately, I'm not going to jump on any bandwagons just yet.

Janet is giving some good advice, in that Abbey should not blame himself for what happened to his parents.
On the other hand, Daisy might have been better off closing her mouth after the first sentence. Yet this too is a truth Abbey needs to hear, that in being 'righteous' he is trying to exert a degree of control over other people, and not necessarily in a gentle way. Abbey wants so much not to be like his father, yet in trying to stick up for the right thing, he still shows some of his father's traits. Maybe this conversation will cause him to reconsider the manner in which he handles things, to be less like "der Führer" (as Jasmine calls him) and more like Gandhi.

Turn that faggot frown upside down. At least your mom isn't dead or a drooling vegetable quietly begging for euthanasia. She just abandoned you. And that's okay because she's a fatty. If she'd raised you more, you'd be a fatty too. It's a shame Senor Abs didn't beat the Republican out of you, but nobody's perfect, right?
Yeah, wacko. Taeshi has a habit of improving like that. It's not even incremental. It's like she's developing artistic techniques in the same places where Iran builds nukes. She goes update-update-update and then WHAM. Nuclear winter in Israel, ten billion molten Jews.
PS: Abbey will never beat Cho's high score.
