So me and one of my friends who has glasses got in a argument about how bad being blind is, as their is a chance that when he will become blind from his genes. I wear hearing aids, and so doctors are going to attempt correctional surgery on my inner ear structures when I have developed more, and the surgery has a chance to fail and make me permanently deaf. I told him this and we got in a debate over which of the disabilities was worse. Both sides had valid points and were reasonable, but I still am miffed over the situation and have decided to ask you guys wether you think being completely Deaf or completely Blind is worse. What do you think?

I think I messed the poll up. XD

Whuh? Why did the topic name and poll change? Jerk! Did you do something?!?!

If I were blind, I could keep music but would lose the chance to converse with one of my most important friends.

If I were deaf, I couldn't listen to music which would be something I don't want to think about, but on the other hand I'd still be able to write.

But in general, with the way my life is, I couldn't imagine surviving without either sense so I'd rank them equally bad.

From the poll, I guess the brain (retarded/autistic) is the thing I'd hate losing the most. Between eyes or ears, I'd say I'd rather lose my ears. Both have comparable artistic capacities, but the eyes are more pratical.

I would prefer losing my voice instead of either of them though.

Being blind would be worse for me.

Considering the amount of time I spend on the internet, writing and typing, if I was blind... none of this would be. All of the friends I made on the net (in addition to my girflriend)... I would never have met them. And there are so many beautiful sights to see, in addition. Just by the way my life is, in addition to my preferences, being blind would be so much worse.

Only thing I'm missing really is ease of communication and music, but the former would be difficult still if I was blind.

I know this isn't part of the poll, but there is a disability that would be worse than being blind or deaf... Being mute. Never being able to speak your mind. Oh sure, there's sign language, but so few people use that (I actually typed "speak that" at first...). And to me... the voice is really important. Hearing a voice, the tone, its timbre, its pitch... There's just something about it, that makes me believe something beautiful about a person is being stolen away when they can't speak.

Of course I might just be weird.

I have to say for me being blind as well, since I want to break into the IT world doing Networking. I also love to build computers and fix hardware when I get jobs for it. Being blind would make that impossible for me. Being deaf means I still do what I love, but being deaf would bite.I can't hear some of the great music that is made. I think each disability is awful no matter what it is. I also think letting it control your life instead of you controlling it would be worse then anything.

@Lux

You are not weird, people most of the time have a wonderful things to say and not being able to it say where everyone can understand it would be awful. Besides a voices can give more then one messages.

Losing sight would be way worse for me.
  • #8

Sight would be way worse. I'm a comic artist, and a writer, so I need my eyes more. Though losing me hearing would be terrible, I just couldn't stand losing my eyes.
  • #9

I am going to have to agree with the whole sight thing, everything I do or want to do need's sight and if I lose my sight I have no clue what I could do. Being deaf I could live with, though I rather just be deaf in one ear :l

If I lose my mind, I lose what I am. That's the worst thing, I'd almost equate it with death.

Well, speaking as someone who's profoundly deaf and also rather myopic, I'd say complete blindness would be worse than complete deafness. Sight is more critical for navigating the world than hearing.

I like my brain very much; I'd want to retain that mental ability.

It stands to reason that people who cannot read are dumber than people who can and that reading is functionally impossible without the use of sight.

Therefore, blind people are stupid.

Braille, Jerk.
  • #14

Jerk, change the poll to include Deafness, and why did you change the topic name?
  • #15

Because the first name was bad and forced me to read the topic to find what it was about.

PS - Polls are pretty stupid in Social Studies, and even more so in Recess. This one just stood out for particular awfulness.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to connect to the Braillenet and feel all these funny new memes before I poke the news and fondle a free novel for my Kindle.

Erm. Okay.

XD your humor is both funny and cruel. I applaud and boo at the same time.

People who are born blind don't understand the world in terms of colors and images anyway, so adapting the interblag for them would not make them feel strange.

People who are born with vision and lose it afterwards, though, might have more trouble adjusting to the Braillenet. Still, they have to get used to make more than normal effort for daily tasks anyway, so it's not very different to adjusting to other activities.

Their sight would be restored if they had enough faith anyway, so it's okay if they suffer a little.

EDIT: Jerk your posts never fail to be amusing and creative. I know you're being a dick, but I just have to say these kind of things because I'm a self righteous asshole. Don't let me ruin your fun.

Furries are the worst cripples. I count it as a kind of autism.

Itu, I'm just being a dick. I'm not actually putting any effort into considering this topic because it's so two-dimensional, and the idea of calling blind people illiterate just amused the fuck out of me.

Psychotic disorders are pretty fucking debilitating if you ask me.

One one hand, you take no meds/the wrong meds and you hallucinate, believe bizarre things that are decidedly NOT rooted in fact but which you cannot be convinced otherwise of (you know, delusions), and exhibit bizarre behavior and speech pattern that leaves you completely unable to function. Then there's the meds, which at best (but rarely) leave you fully functional yet unfortunately come with side effects like dry mouth, impotence, decreased or sex drive, weight gain, lethargy, lack of motivation (funny because Schizophrenia-spectrum disorders have this as a symptom), drowsiness, insomnia, numbness, fuck the list goes on. Oh, and with the terrifying common complications of diabetes, the fatal-if-untreated Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome, and the often permanent Tardive dyskenesia. Unless your lucky, you will be just as disabled on-medication as off. Some people with psychosis PREFER the psychosis part to the medication. And you can forget searching for the theoretically side-effect free prescription; no anti-psychotic is universal so when you find one that works, you stick with it DESPITE the side effects.

Don't get me started on schizo-affective disorder, which is this mixed with a major mood disorder. Have fun having to manage an anti-psychotic, a mood stabilizer like Lithium AND an antidepressant...

I'm a guy of few words outside of the internet, save for a few of my friends.

And there is a /huge/ difference between choosing not to speak and not being able to speak. I know what it's like to be mute, in a sense. I've had a few teeth surgeries and had gauze and other stuff put in my mouth. I mean, that was bad enough for an hour...

... But once, I had my gums pushed down so my canines could grow in (tmi..?), and I couldn't talk for the entire day. Partly because my mouth was covered for most of it, and partly because any movement would cause furious bleeding. (Example, I tried to eat pasta... and it ended up looking like I put meatball sauce on it) It was one of the worst feelings. Again, I bet to most people it's not that big a deal, especially for such a little amount of time, but when I was allowed to speak I literally sang. That's how happy I was to have my voice back.

The compensation was that I could still type and stuff, so it wasn't completely bad.

The fact that this had to be stated openly contributes to my theory that you are all retarded.

I'm not going to let you down gently if I see you being a complete fucking idiot.
  • #27

Glad to hear someone has a backbone to do so, Jerk.

Lets hope I am not on that end of the stick to often.
