Lets talk about card games.

You see this mo'fo? Remember how much this bitch kicked ass? Yeah? You do?

How about this guy?

Yeah you do.

I would post a picture of some M:TG character but I never played that so suck it up.

Summened skull is a far more valuable card then blue eyes white dragon. You only need to sacrafice 1 monster for it and it has a really high attack sure it has sucky defense but who uses a summened skull for defense? That's what island turtle or mystical elf is for. Sure blue eyes is 3000 attack but everyone is gonna kill it as soon as they see it and it requires 3 monsters which I rarely have enough monsters I am willing to sacrafice for it.

Funny story.

I used to have both of those cards. I didn't buy the $50 cards myself, but some of my friends did. And I was a regular Pokemon card shark. Got a shit-ton of good cards from some desperate suckers who wanted the few I did have, then meticulously traded up until BAM! I got EVERYONE. Ancient Mew, all the starters, the three Eevee evolutions, the three legendary birds, Mew and Mewtwo, the rare kind of Pikachu. Some kid tossed in the Blue-Eyes in a pile and got me to make a fair trade one time. I had a respectable couple deck's worth of Yu-Gi-Oh at the end there.

Long story short, I grew up.

So I lit Blue-Eyes on fire and used him as a torch to light all my other Yu-gi-oh cards and most of my common extra pokemon cards. Then I nailed my non-foil Charizard to a dock under the high tide line. Because Charizard won me too many matches to go so easily, and I could never look at him again. He had to have a warrior's burial.

I still have the foil, as well as a folder full of cards that were the pinacle of awesome eleven years ago. Figure they'll give my grandkids a good laugh to hear exactly how many I started with (i only ever bought two decks and three boosters)

Moral of the story: Card games are stupid. But they make you learn the real value of money real quick. And they teach the best trait a business man can have: the poker face.

I may have missed something, but apparently you grew up, so pyromania was in order?

8-D

I mean I played cards when I was a kid, and I haven't burnt them, despite growing up.
  • #4

You realize some of those cards are pretty valuable right now? I like card games they are fun and the strategy is interesting. Yes you need to spend some money to get decent cards, but so does your opponent. So unless your oppenent is really rich it shouldn't matter. I don't see anything wrong with them.
  • #5

big bag of M:TG cards sitting behind my computer right now gathering dust. Man, so many planeswalkers....
  • #6

I have so many cards from MG:T. I don't really play anymore. I kinda miss it sometimes but decks can't compate anymore and I was never that good to start off with. My favorite card from that game is this baby

Here let me break the colors down so you know what color deck you want. Black is mainly hurting and killing creature and destroying stuff. Green is mainly creatures and getting land. Fire is damaging creatures and players. Blue is control like controlling what your opponent can play. White is a lot of thing but mostly it is gaining life.

I would make a joke that "Blue is the good color, play it" but I'm not sure if it is actually funny. :3

Oh boy card games, that brings back memories.

My students brought their Yu-Gi-Oh cards with them to the lesson today and we had a good discussion about what decks I used to play and what were my favorite cards. They were surprised that their teacher knew how to play!

It is a fun game to play really. I wish I had time play and there were nice people around to play again. I used to play in weekly drafts every week but then my ex broke up with me. The people weren't that nice and it wasn't a fun area for me so I haven't really found another place. Try to do what they call Friday magic if you can. Those are fun.

Also another awesome card game that is awesome and I love to play at parties with my friends and my finace is Munchkin!

I mean the card has funny text and it is very fun to play.

I never really got into Yu-Gi-Oh. It was just sorta a side thing, to balance out some of the trades and to get rid of some of the ever-growing mass of extras.

And yes. Pyromania was absolutely necessary when I got bored of it all. I am fully capable of giving a rational reason for keeping my full set of all 151 original pokemon, all of the trainers, all of the special manas, and most of darks and special editions and misprints. It's a FULL. SET. I spent YEARS of my life swindling that away from those damn rich kids and if I ever really want to get rid of them some rich guy would buy it off of me in a second, for his richie rich spoiled son. But those cards hold a lot of nostalgia for me, and it'll be a funny story some day to my kids.

I didn't, however, have many of the actually rare Yu-Gi-Oh cards. Thus I decided "to hell with it, one game's enough" and burned them where other collecters and players could see.

There was much wailing and gnashing of teeth as I set them ablaze, all whilst I laughed meniacally and Ivy Thompson sobbed and James Meyers asked "WHY!? WHY!? WHY!?"

Ok, so maybe Ivy was crying for a different reason but it was hilarious.

Of course, I did sort of get suspended for a week lighting fires on the blacktop during recess... but it was so worth it.

MtG is awesome.

There's prob'ly a dozen or so people here with cards and a few who play with others' decks and it's fun. Magic is relatively affordable as well if you're not going to play competitively.
  • #22

No it was mew, me and my bro both got it and its translation to the one we went to. But we only had one holographic Mewtwo floating around.

Ah I remember there was pack that had Mewtwo as well. I owned that one. I do like to play Pokemon but I don't collect them anymore. Game is pretty fun and simple.

cough username cough [7th edition art]

Card games offer a bit of strategy that is missing in digital games. Primarily the exposure of face expressions. Trying to hide your excitement takes a bit of practice.

Plus the fun of socially interacting with others in realtime is a bonus no activity can forego.

I still recall how to MTG, Pokemon, Yugioh, DBZCCG/GT [score]. Mainly cause they were fun and had a lot of good memories with friends. The collecting and tournament side never caught on with us that much, and I was happy to do with what I had.

Yes the games were really designed to take your money if you weren't good and all that. But it doesn't matter if you can enjoy the time you spend playing with them.

~~
relatedly, I still do play DBZ with my friend. And because I got bored with the cards in the game, I started to make my own to expand the variety and strategy. I have too much free time and made roughly 800 of them. oops.

Does anyone other then me wish the unhinged series of cards wasn't illegal to use? They are so random I laugh at every single one.

I do! They are so fun to play at Conventions, mostly because there is at least 5 people in a match.

Eh, They just seem like they would ruin a serious game of magic.
  • #29

They cause legit nerd rage. For the way they react you'd think I'd just taken their 1st edition 69/69 Summon Buttfucker and wiped my dick on it.

It is so funny when that happens. Nothing like someone almost quitting the game because of unglued

So I went drafted Magic the Gathering again in 4 years. New set just came out last week. Needless to say I love it. I like the Undying that has been brought into the game along with other cool things.

Revived the thread hope that is okay.
  • #35

Curious. I have never played draft Magic. I wanted to give it a shot with this Block, but, I am finding it difficult to think I could build a coherent deck with such wildly swung abilities.
  • #36

I found it easy with this block. A lot easier then block I used to played. There was a guy that wiped floor with me using blue and white I think. I would recommend blue for this block if you draft. Red and Black is seeming really good for standard right now. I am not sure since last night was the first time I have drafted/ even played with this block.

I would care to argue. I find Green White is best in this block, at-least for draft. Last week I got 3rd place in a 20 man draft with it.

I have fucking lost ALL OF MY GAMES for the last 4 times I played pre-con standard. Draft is the ONLY way I can win.
  • #38

So, getting in to magic. I bought a store white-green infection deck that is ok, kinda bad to be honest. I am working on an artifact-creature based deck that has a lot of Metalcraft affects that are very beneficial. It is looking pretty good actually.

Have fun playing against counter spell decks.
  • #40

Metalcraft is a pain in the ass to make work properly if you don't have lods of cheap artifacts
  • #41

Well current plan involves a large degree of 0 cost artifact creatures and a handful of 0-1 artifacts so I may be good on that front.

I have never loathed a person more than I have loathed Bibioholic fffff

I'm sorry, I have this whole collector's mindset with cards. Like keeping them in good condition and never screwing with them and getting upset if they get scratches and such. I preserved my cardssssss, I guess it's okay that the rare ones are saved, but there's just this bit of rage that wells within me with idiots who don't take good care of their cards.

It's kind of funny that during my whole Pokemon-collecting craze I never got a Charizard :(

Though I was always in love with these cards

Seriously, having these cards meant more than whatever Charizard or Blue Eyes White Dragon would give. I was a really girly collector :-[ Like if I got a super rare card that was cool, but I always aimed for the adorable super cool Japanese cards that are probably not worth as much.

I am quite sad that I gave my collection to my cousin to hold onto, and I still get questions from my younger cousin if he can keep them, but he's a player man. He's gonna mess with them :( I want them back. As a dumb artist, it's amazing inspecting the cards and who drew it and the way it was done and nghghg
  • #43

Apparently I was wrong and they gave away the ancient holographic Mew cards at Pokemon 2000, me and my brother got into a fight over it at dinner last week. Upside is when my mom told us to stop, I got to use the "This is serious business, this is a children's card game!" in context so that was nifty.

Spoiler

I love Southern Islands!

The Pokemon TCG was a major nerdout for me up until e Expedition. Now, the sudden drop from being a middle class individual (albeit briefly) to poverty had something to do with it, but the real issue for me was that they started reinventing the damn game.

I never played in the organized tournaments, so banned cards didn't effect me. The difficulty in finding certain types of packs was worth what I could get. New types of cards--Babies, Stadiums, Tools and that crappy card drawing trainer they released in Expedition were all fine. It was more important for a while to put food on the table. Suddenly, Wizards had lost the series and Nintendo started fucking up the rules, rewriting core gameplay mechanics that had been in place since the beginning. The game is, in my opinion, a mess now. I haven't played it in over two years.

As for other games, I never got into them. I have a YuGiOh deck that was a gift from my stepbrother; I could never understand that game, and put little effort into it. Magic likewise never appealed to me, and as stated before, I don't play the Pokemon TCG anymore.

Ohh, you had to go and put those up. :D

I still have a few Cubones left, but sadly they made a few too many sets to keep up with.

I can remember getting the following in my first pack of Pokemon cards, Ponyta, Gust of wind, Pokemon Center, Starmie, defender/or/pluspower.

Also, loads of people only buy Magic cards for the art. Some of the best fantasy art at some of the most affordable prices.

How about, what makes you folk not want to play a CCG/TCG type cardgame? Maybe if you know the reasons you don't want to give it a try, someone can come along and make a game that would appeal to you.

My biggest beef with TCGs is the whole 'you have to invest time and money to play' bullshit. Which is funny to me because both YuGiOh and Pokemon had video games that replicated the card games exactly, except you didn't have to shell out money for new cards or carry a deck with you and blah blah blah blah.

I have too many hobbies already, if I'm going to spend money for units in a game I'm playing I would hope it would be more tangible than a piece of cardboard. I'd rather just get into Warhammer 40k or something.

Plus non of my friends are into Magic or any TCG for that matter.

I played MTG for a while, but i got bored.
