Verbal Tics

I've been inspired to make this topic. Well, more like irritated to the point where this becomes a passive-aggressive rant, but I guess it can lead to discussion, as well.

Verbal Tics. You've heard of 'em, you hate 'em, and if you like 'em then my sympathies for that time you fell on your head when you were young.

NOTE: By verbal tics I mean things people add in their posts--or ways people talk. I guess it's a loose definition of the word, but anyway.

I mean, generally speaking, I could deal with them. There were irritating ways of talking--take the stereotypical popular teenage girl "Liek, oh em gee u are sooooo beautiful baby hmu <3 <3 <3." Okay, so that was annoying enough, but then I came across someone who posts like... THIS.

Spoiler

I ripped that word for word from another forum I go to. In fact, a few of her posts have laughs so long that they STRETCH THE FRICKIN' PAGE. I don't know what the hell is up with her but it makes me so annoyed that I want to punch /myself/ in the face hard enough so that I'll black out and not see it.

You'd think "hey, why not just dodge around those posts?" Well, it's hard to do when she posts with every other post that someone else makes.

...

So anyway. Verbal tics. How much do you hate them? And have you come across worse than this? Go ahead and give any example you've come across.

(I think I'm going to regret this later for posting such a rage-y topic but I just woke up and I'm too groggy to care)

Usually it's a decent place.

But then there are people like her. And other people. But she's the most recent offender.

Doesn't look like a tic, more like something an idiot does to try to look cute or playful (on the internet, through a post?).

Guess that applies to several ways of talking anyway, like the one you mentioned of the "popular teenage girl". They just try to look like they're something they probably aren't or to fit in with a group that talks like that. I especially hate people who try to look intelligent by using big words and names of people when it's completely unecessary. (But not as much as people who actually fall for it)

If people don't cuss her out it's a good indicator that the forum's pretty bad.

Maybe I misunderstood the meaning of verbal tic. I guess I'll revise my original post to reflect what I meant. Again, I woke up recently.

Actually, there are multiple people calling her annoying. Or mocking her.

They're not all bad. You can use subtle things to completely change the meaning of a post. For example, putting an emoticon at the end can convey anything from helpfulness to hostility. 8-)

Verbal and posting habits like that can be annoying. A long time ago on a different forum there was someone who would post with tons of exclamation marks and emoticons for every single post, no matter what is was, like they were always super excited. That was really annoying. Actual tics are involuntary, but they can be just as viciously annoying. Like my stuttering and repetitive way of speaking, for example. I can't control it but it's damn irritating to me and everyone else who has to hear it.

I just wanna work on my misuse/overuse of 'like', 'umm', and 'I dunno'. Especially when I end a complete idea with an 'I dunno...' and trail off making me look like an unsure idiot.

Would you call them attention whores?

I have the same problem as bourbon. I tend to end things with "I don't know" or "yeah", and I tend to say "uh" and "umm" and those sort of things during a sentence even if I've already thought out what I'm going to say.
  • #10

What you are speaking of are known as Filler Words the "uh" "umm" "like" "yeah" etc., this is pretty much the downfall/death of public speakers or those in speech and debate :D

so they have to use as few filler words as possible when speaking XD

yes, I have been trying to cut back my usage of them. I imagine it must be really hard to hold a conversation with me! another thing is I will commonly forget what I am saying mid-sentence, or forget an Idea I had a fraction of a second before. I have terrible memory.

These words serve a purpose in maintaining the listener's attention and negotiating over who currently holds the floor.

I tend to break sentences with other sentences (that I put into parenthesis to explain a side point while in the middle of another point) and then continue on as if it wasn't there. I guess that could be seen as a tic, and get annoying after a while.

I seem to have a love affair with breaking and making new paragraphs.

I'd imagine it gets annoying.

But you know?

That's okay.

I guess you can call it a tic.

I've noticed I'm becoming more and more like Katie.

I've found my words to be quick, and straight to the point, unless I am texting with girls on my phone, I will rarely use more then one emoticon per post, which is not a lot.
Oh dear god. That was one sentence? *Shoots himself*
  • #20

I tend to stretch out my vowels. It makes me sound like a douchebag ;_; . Things like "Nooo" or "Siiiimple" Or my favorite; "Diiiick"
  • #21

I've noticed that I use "like" online way more than I do in real life. Like, it's not even present when I speak the way I use it online. Y'know?
