A Cadence of Sighs

The ancient voyager lifted slowly above the mud stained silhouettes of a rusted cityscape. The rocks and moss hugging it's curves falling prey to gravity, tumbled to the ground. It's sleek shape marred by long ago battles and years of slumber in a turbulent world. It slowly turned, and the hull yawned with distress, protesting it's movement. The will of it's form straining to wake from a deep slumber.
A glow began to emanate from the stern, an aqua colour diffusing into the surrounding air. It fluctuated, whined, then pulsed, punching forward with a subsonic wave of energy, blowing debris in all directions. The vessel careened forward into the distance, compressed air streaming behind it. It became invisible within seconds.
Silence fell like a shadow upon the weary brown streets. The sparse plants listened for something, a simple sign that all was well. Metal against metal, somewhere a can skittered across the asphalt and hit the burnt out husk of a vehicle. The creatures had come out into the open, remnants of us. A child of evolution, the ocean of the wastes had changed them.
They were small, pale, and had sparse hair on their frail bodies, and yet they retained our intellect, if not our knowledge. The beast that yearned to know, to grow, still lived on. The had mastery of simplistic tools, and a glean those more complex yet to come. They ran on all fours towards the now vacant crash site, a gaping wound in a sea of scars.
There was a stillness in the air. They felt it waft in. Something old, and it hummed of mystery and twilight, floating between the planes of reality. They felt this presence, and they knew fear, and awe. For they knew of our transcendence. And through this all they knew our kinship.

My feet are rooted in the sand as I see them set out to sea
Multi facceted granules of stone shift as I step forward, breaking the bond
Each minute edge scrapes my tender soles
My arm falls, the grit sets my teeth on edge
Millions of gnashing fangs and daggers consume

The horizon gazes at me
It splits my harmony with the imputiny of a guillotine
I can see them laughing now
A half formed thought sputters through my skull
It careens out of control, synaptic sparks envelope my being
I call out

The laughter dies
An explosion of wind pushes against me
With it it carries the fables of foreign lands
But silence pervaids the shore
Save for the gentle lap of water at the edge of my mind

I gaze down at the sand and sea scum
I look past it
I desperatly sift through the infantecimal interconnected machinary of nature
Dissonance reigns in the temple
And the world passes me by
A cadence of sighs
