The story of the break-in

For those curious, I wrote up our experience of dealing with a burglary at our apartment the night before last.

It kinda sucks, but we're working through it.
  • #1

D: Well, I hope you and veronica find your stolen items and who ever stole them turned into the police. Even if it is naive thinking, It is very sad that your apartment was broken into :(
  • #2

I'm sorry to hear that you two. That's really awful and I hope everything gets sorted out soon. It's a good thing the two of you are safe though, so there's that at least. Pretty brave of you both to attempt to pursue the thief. I can't really begin to imagine how violated the two of you feel. The apartment next to ours was broken into recently, the people were pretty shaken up about it and it's fairly unnerving to know it happened so close to us.

Regardless, I hope the scum that did this to you gets the punishment he or she deserves.

Wow Suitcase, I'm sorry to hear that. Sounds like quite a day... I've had some burglaries happen, but not while I was home. That would freak me out and I'd probably shoot somebody.

But I am curious about said sword.

Taeshi Diary Here's Veronica's take on the aftermath
  • #5

Crap. I hear about stuff like this in the states all the time, but I've never actually known anyone whose home was robbed.

I wish you guys luck, and hope they didn't take anything of too much value.

Edit: I probably should have read the article you wrote first. So they got your PS3, your iMac, a cell phone, about 280 dollars or so in foreign money and a sword? Well, I'm glad they didn't take anything more, but considering how important your iMac is to you (or rather, what I gathered of it's performance) and considering how much it'll cost you to replace it, I really feel for you. I can't imagine how it would feel to have my rig stole.

Take care, and try not to stress to much. Chances are, that sweaty shirt will close the case very quickly.

She seems like she's doing alright at least. Two things though.

One, bus schedules are the biggest lying sack of crap on the planet and two, you're totally not the only one who eats like 3 or 4 of those things at a time, Taeshi. They seriously cannot expect you to just eat one at a time, that's insane and utter nonsense.

Yeah, that really sucks. Hope the police are able to recover your stolen items or catch whoever did it.

As for the IRC thing, I'm as perplexed as you are. Except for the ping timeout, those log entries make no sense given the circumstances you described. I assume you got the info from someone else's log?

So then, the iMac was unplugged a few minutes before 10:49 pm, which would cause it to go dead. The thief left with the stolen goods around 10:50 pm. After that, the computer would need to be plugged back in within 15 minutes, and the thief would need to get past the login screen even to configure wi-fi (I'm presuming). And what's more, the IRC logs show your own network being used to reconnect. Very mysterious. The only thing I can think of is to ask whether you use IRC on your other wireless devices? Perhaps you accidentally connected?

P.S. I don't think Taeshi's weird for not wanting extra Parmesan cheese. I prefer not to have it either!

I hate cheese, so I didn't even want extra :P I had none at all

Well, if the cops don't find these asswipes and you ever have a kid, he or she can grow up into a brooding warrior. "I must find the man who stole the sword of my father."
  • #10

I agree with Jerk there on that one. I will train that kid on the basics of swordplay, and accompany him on his journey until I can no longer continue.

But seriously though, i'm sorry to hear that this happened, and if you guys are in need of a little extra cash to replace things just ask.

It is so fortunate you had a backup. If my computer got stolen, I don't know what I would have done without one!

My house has been robbed twice and both times, none of the major things were ever retrieved, even though the people were caught. It's possible you'll get them back, but I'd say that they've already been sold. Except maybe the sword, I don't know who'd want to buy that.

Anyone about to go out on an adventure to slay evil and save a princess.

But how can he do that? They stole his sword.

Guess I'm safe around them again :P
  • #14

Presumably. I don't know what kind of dragon you are. Besides titanium, obviously.

Next time, you should dress up your Mac as a PC, Suitcase. Maybe we can find you some faux-broken case mod to make it look like shit so no one will think to steal it.
  • #15

Even better, make it look like a CRT monitor.
  • #16

That wouldn't be hard. Just take a CRT monitor someone else is throwing out, hollow it out and prop the plasma screen inside in a way that you could just take off the shell when you want your room not to look like shit.
  • #17

If you can find a 27" CRT monitor, sure.

I don't know if this is relevant or helpful, but seeing as you called AppleCare, I'm assuming you have an AppleCare plan. I found out that you can transfer the plan to another computer, so you could apply it to one of your laptops so it doesn't go to waste. Also, one of my friends was able to recover a stolen laptop by having local police come with them to pawn shops in the area of the robbery. (In their case, they had a VERY good idea of what shop it was at. I'm not sure if the police would be willing to hop from one to another looking for it, but especially if you have the serial number, this could be a pretty pro-active option.)

Good thing they didn't have a gun, presumably. That could have been the difference in fleeing verse confronting.

We're not America. Not every second idiot has a gun.
  • #21

No, but even with the chances much lower, I still wouldn't stake my life on assuming they weren't packin' heat. PS3 and Mac Books are replaceable; you aren't.
  • #22

Maki, that's fascinating! I have about a year left of AppleCare for the stolen iMac. Can I shift it to any Mac, or does it have to be within the first year of ownership (i.e. eligible for AppleCare if you just buy it)?

What you say makes sense, but really, they could get shot at any time, which is why it's good that 'not every second idiot has a gun'
Australian thieves are actually quite polite, since we all descended from convicts.

@Suitcase: I think it has to be only just purchased, or already under AppleCare.
Edit: I don't think you're eligible under Apple's T&C. Scroll down to point 10.

That honestly sounds more like a joke meant to be about Canadians. Apparently we're known for apologizing or something.

Urp! I didn't read the fine print when I was browsing forums. Seems you have to have purchased the product within 30 days, BUT! I've been talking with Apple frequently recently dealing with my 8 year old Powerbook G4's hard drive failure, and they've tried to bend the rules for me a few times, so I'd ask if they could make an exception. I found that it helps to be chatty about general geekery and to be a girl. Heh. :3

The info is here: How to transfer coverage of an AppleCare agreement

I'll also ask my friend who works at Apple Support. According to him, the Genius Bar/Apple Stores, AppleCare, and Apple Support operate somewhat independently, so getting a negative answer from one doesn't necessarily mean you'll get a negative answer from the other two. (^_^)v
  • #30

The AppleCare protection kit needs to have been purchased in the last 30 days, and both the old and new computers purchased within a year, where they would still be under the manufacturer's warranty (This would be where you fall out, Suitcase). I don't think it's worth it though, because Apple stuff doesn't break often enough, so what's the point, right?
I can confirm the character of Apple store staff, though. My own brother worked there.
  • #31

Yeah, I think AppleCare is only really a necessity for MacBooks. iMacs are rock solid, it's the notebooks that are badly made pieces of junk.
