Forum Rules (now Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger)

JESUS CHRIST, THIS WILL...

oh wait, have no bearing on me whatsoever.

Seriously, if you're worried about these rules, then you probably have very good reason to be. If you're not worried at all about these rules, then you probably have very good reason not to be.

(My only concern is regarding avatars. Most people think of furry things when they think cute, and I still feel that is a very subjective rule. But I'm sure that argument totally has never been beat to death. But whatever, I have plenty of other avatars if my current one is deemed unfitting.)

SHUT DOWN EVERTHING ANYWAYS.

Also: Totally in support of "don't start public shit with a mod" implementation, usually if you have a discussion with just a single person (via PMs in this case), you can flesh out any misunderstandings and get to know each other and their views/policies a little better, as opposed to the clusterfuck of many angry people throwing out their stupid opinions about how they think YOU should run YOUR site. Most stupid arguments evolve over simple misunderstandings anyway, so for a back-and-forth PM session to be the only course of action, it would be a lot easier to clear things up without others enforcing the misunderstanding.

A+ ILB, you hit the nail right on the head.

Actually, I meant that sentence to be interpreted in a slightly different manner, but I suppose it ends up the same.

If it helps to know, the don't publicly criticise mods rule is the one that makes me feel the most upset at myself. But like the rest of these rules, it's more of a signifier for a change in philosophy than an ironclad law.
  • #153

Well, I think it's perfectly acceptable. Public criticism isn't all bad, but the problem is people have a tendency to become unruly and jump on a bandwagon. Besides, it's easier for the mods to deal with things one issue at a time than dealing with a million posts at once.

As for the other rules, the only thing that really changes is a loss of Recess. I'm completely indifferent on that; Recess was largely shit, though there were some good threads, and its presence caused a rift in the forum. The old forum was generally more like this--you can be goofy, as long as you're not dull as hell. Really, beyond these two points (which are minor) the rules haven't changed at all.

One recommendation: If anyone sees any Recess threads they miss that deserve to be revived, they can go to IRC and link us to it so that we can revive it. We did that a bit when Recess was first put down, and took about three or so topics out of the forums.

If there's anything we missed that isn't just a dumb forum game, let us know! Not here, though, then it'll become a clusterfuck of "yes" "no" "uhh maybe"
  • #155

Maybe a rule about not bumping old topics. Or is that in there?

Of course that isn't allowed. You need to add something relevant and important to bump an old topic.

I'm sorry that I didn't know this. I'm just not going to bump old topics anymore.
  • #158

hey guys this thread is really old and irrelevant let me bump it asking why it isnt locked

Yeah, because I totally know the hidden rule to forums. Don't bump old topics unless it's relevent to the thread.
  • #160

idk i think its common sense to bump something that's been dead for months that's no longer relevant to anyone. no one would ever post in it, meaning it doesn't have to be locked.

Considering I've never been on forums except this one (and even then, don't frequently check on it), I guess that common sense didn't get to me.

I don't think bumping old topics is a completely bad move, I think it depends on a few things:

-don't bump current event threads that are long dead (like something that occurred in 2010)
-if you want to make a topic about something, check if it exists first, and bump that thread if it does. The whole DON'T BUMP OLD STUFF rule is the reason why for a while we had people making topics that existed for ages, like shipping threads.
-if you want to bump something very old, the post must be of value. Don't bump something with "I agree" or "wow!" or something that someone probably already said in the thread that killed it. That just adds more rubbish.
  • #163

So basically: no resurrecting current event posts after they're no longer relevant, no redundant posts and no insubstantial posts regardless of purpose. If you've really got something to add to an old post, it's not insubstantial; but the former two don't have justification. It's just less tolerated here.
  • #164

im talking specifically about this person's case, aka bumping a "why cant i do this?" topic made by akacatgirl 2 years ago
  • #165

I think it was annoying backseat modding in that case. Reveling in the glory that you can make some kind of suggestion a moderator will follow through on.
  • #166

Ok, I think I now got the idea. I won't bump old topics unless I have something of value to add.

On the backseat modding, at the time I was only making a suggestion that I was wondering if you could do that, but I now feel stupid for doing that and would like to move on from this.
  • #167

While I am new to the forum, for the most part I agree to these rules and don't find that huge a problem with them. There is one thing that worries me, and it's that cute avatar rule. I can see why you wouldn't want ugly bad avatars everywhere, but I'd rather have an avatar I can relate to me or at least in some way have people recognize as me rather than just some 'cute' avatar. For the record it's also very vague as to what would be considered acceptable. Should it be cartoonish to some degree? Taking a look at avatars in this thread as a basis, they all look cartoonish to some degree. I don't want to sound annoying, but I'd much prefer a simple no dreary/ugly avatars rule or something.
  • #168

IF YOU CAN'T BE REPRESENTED BY SOMETHING CUTE, GET OUT
  • #169

shit. I'm not even going to post any more in social studies. I'll stick to A.V. and Creative arts.

Yeah it's a shame your very thoughful, interesting and greatly abundant content won't be on social studies anymore.

Well, I guess you're on your right.
  • #176

I found it doesn't necessarily have to be cute, just find a picture of the comic or a cartoon you like, like mine!

not saying BCB isn't cute

then go find a forum where someone gives a shit about what you think
  • #178

I thought this forum was more open to people... it really seamed that way.
  • #179

It's open to people who lurk long enough to figure out what it wants from you, namely interesting or funny contributions. It also helps to realize that it's not a public place; it has owners who have the right to demand a quality of behavior from its members.
  • #180

The avatar rule is not even to thwart inappropriate pictures. I mean, who honestly wants a duracell logo or an NFPA diamond as an avatar?

the other thing is getting an avatar is not a requirement.

If you don't want something cute then you are perfectly capable of posting in the forum without an avatar.
  • #182

As much as i love you guys (teashi/suitcase) I gotta say that the restriction of "Furry" avatars is a little unorthodox. I don't really see why we have to limit our avatars to "something attractive". I don't see why furry-themed avatars can't be considered attractive. Avatars help give other users an idea of your personality or background. Not being a furry myself, Despite my avatar being a picture of cat, I still believe you should have the freedom to choose your avatar, regardless of it's content (with the exception of porn, of course)

And I miss the goofy, crazed antics that occurred in the recess 'subject'. it was a place to post topics or comments that entertain others, If you don't like that kinda stuff, don't click "Recess". While I understand why it was removed, i still think this forum currently lacks a place for the comedic BCB readers

I don't think you should have the freedom to pick anything ugly. Furries are ugly, but many people do not realise this, so there is a rule about it.

And yes, the forum does not provide a place for that. It is by design. Those readers should stay silent.

There's a difference between making funny and lighthearted posts and plain-old shitposting. Once you can tell the difference between the two, there shouldn't be a problem at all.
  • #185

Personally I don't agree with your decission to close Recess, although I wasn't really active on it. But as I said before:

Normally Id crusade in your right to choose an avatar, and show you the ways to cirumvent the rule.

But honestly? Its a goddman avatar on a forum. If that actually has any sort of effect on you aside from "darn I cant use picture blah", then thats juat weird. Doesnt really change you posts, and an 80 x 120 picture I hope doesnt define you.

Did you mean threads rather than forums? You can start a new thread, but first you should search to see if a thread already exists for the topic you want to discuss.
  • #190

Hey, this might be a little irrelevent, but is there anyone i can email to change me username?

moot is the polar opposite of everything you should want to be in life.

In addition to being an ugly pedophile.

That's true, but it's not like I said I idolized him or anything, so you didn't have to bring that up. Anyways 4chan is like that though. :smirk:
