From: Forum Rules (now Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger) From Topic ID: 2698

I heard there was some drama going down and was highly amused, I just read the new rules stuff and well... lol.

Here are the issues with it:

After 16 months of lax modding, the forum will now be strictly moderated for post quality. We want better discussions, limited drama and less nonsense. Shitposting will now have consequences, criticising mods will get you in trouble, and you should stay on your toes. Please read this post.

Fair enough, this makes sense for the most part.

Always be insightful, funny or entertaining.

Subjectivity in moderating the forum? Not gonna work.

Quote

Never discuss personal matters that only interest you and a small number of people. Smalltalk and favourite colours are out.

Smalltalk and favourite colours are bad, sure. Niche interest groups however are not. This serves to kill interesting conversations which others may be interested in reading but not contributing to.
Example: People like rock climbing, but only some of them, they post about it, get discussing it. Posts get locked and they get infractions. Hardly fair for something so harmless, and which actually contributes to the community spirit.

Quote

Never criticise moderators or their decisions publicly, without explicit permission. Use PM or email.

So posting this will probably get me a hilarious ban? Now in some cases this is fair enough, mods decision is final and all that, but when it means you can't even discuss and be critical about rules? No. Bad idea. Just serves to alienate your community. Webcomics are cool, but if people decide they dislike the founders, people leave in DROVES.

--Edit

I see mav clarified the situation. In that case, you might want to update the OP with that clarification before MOAR drama is had.

Your avatar must be cute. Nothing ugly, nothing poorly resized, nothing stupid and nothing furry. Make something attractive.

MORE SUBJECTIVITY! WHEE!

For minor infractions of any rule, you will be warned by a moderator. Major infractions, you will be temporarily banned for a period of 1—10 days. We will use the forum's warning system to keep track of repeated bad behaviour. Every moderator can place temporary bans.

What's major and what's minor?

Quote

PERMABANS AND APPEALS
You get one second chance after your temporary ban. Next time, it's permanent. If you are permabanned, ask yourself "Am I likely to run into trouble if I'm let back in?"

If your answer is "yes", or "because the moderators seem to be unfair, yes", you cannot appeal.

If your answer is "no", wait at least a month for things to cool off, and email me with a request. I will consider unbanning you.

Because permabans ever stopped a persistent troll. Same goes for IP bans. But this is standard policy really so FAAAAIR ENOUGH.

RESERVE POWERS
Posting here is a privilege granted by Veronica and myself. If you annoy us, you're out.

Sorry. We love that you read the comic and hope you keep doing it. But we've found it fundamentally uncomfortable to deal with a bunch of people we dislike on a daily basis, in a forum that exists as a favour to you guys. If this was your place, we're sure you'd understand.

Yes this is fair enough, can completely understand. Which is why your best option is to IGNORE your forums for the most part.

PERMISSIBLE TOPICS
The new rules mean game topics — "Which pony would the person above you most like to marry", "type the username above you with your tongue", etc — are forbidden. They are not insightful, funny or entertaining. Similar topics may actually be entertaining, and therefore permissible: things like "Real Life Picture thread", "Tales of Drama Survival", "IRC quote thread". As you can tell, this is subjective. Try to imagine what I'd think about it.

Fair enough, but wow, killjoy. Running out of space on your webserver?

On the other end of the spectrum: there is a weird culture in Social Studies where people feel obligated to write super serious topics about transgenderism, liberal politics, abortion and Citizens United. Please remember: this forum is primarily about a webcomic and things surrounding it. Some current affairs are fine, but keep the community fun and lighthearted — all this super serious stuff makes it feel boring as hell.

Again subjective as to whether that's boring or not. Why not section it off somewhere else as well? /shrug
This just feels like you being a dick frankly.

We want this to be a forum worth visiting, and working hard to write quality posts is the best way to make that happen.

And not having OTT modding and rules. You forgot that part.

There are drawbacks to this method of forum moderation. Mods will go on power trips, you will feel more stressed being here

So this is a good idea WHY? How to alienate your community 101: make people hate the place they go to be part of that community.

Quote

But the benefits will be a higher quality community that aligns better to the vision of Veronica and myself.

"If you don't happen to have similar views to us, you will be ostracised." Cool. Cool cool cool. Again, hating on your readers. If they dislike you enough they leaaaaave.

You may reply to this topic to discuss the rule changes. Comments and suggestions welcome!

Oh good, well at least that's reasonable.

I don't even lurk here anymore, seeing as most of the shit that went on in this forum was like stepping into United States politics. Retarded.
I'm just pointing out that you're doing it wroooooooong.
I do see though that the Recess sub was probably a festering shitehole.

I also hear there's a new forum about that you get banned for linking to. No harm mentioning it though, speak to Ubertoast and a few others to find out more!

Have a nice day! ))))
