Administrator's Office (Bugs, ads, bans and suspensions)

This thread is where you should report website and forum problems, make suggestions, and look to see where new bans have been placed. Makes sense to unify this stuff, right?

REPORTING ADS
We use a variety of ad networks on BCB, mostly only visible by US-based visitors. Not a single provider is allowed to show video ads, audio ads or popups and popovers, so this should never happen.

But it does. And it's a really difficult problem to solve. Basically, rogue advertisers figure out how to shoehorn bad things into the networks and they end up on our site. If it happens too often, I stop using that ad network, but it's very difficult to tell where they come from.

To help me identify ads, don't just say "I saw a popup" or "a video played about X product". This is completely useless information that I can't act on. What you need to do is to use advanced tools in Safari, Chrome or Opera to trace where it came from. If you're not using these browsers (or you have Firefox without Firebug installed) you cannot help.

Here's what to do:

  • Right click the ad. If there's a "Inspect Element" menu item, click it. If not, right click the area surrounding hte ad and do it.
  • A Web Inspector should appear. It will be a mess of code. You need to find the line that says:
    <div id="ad_rectangle" class="ad-top">
in this mess. (It might also say ad_skyscraper or ad_leaderboard depending, but the class="ad-top" is always there.)
  • You must now expose everything below this point in the element tree. Click every disclosure triangle beneath this line of code to expose a whole bunch of code that shows the pathway to get to the final ad.
  • Copy and paste this text to me, or take several screenshots of the entire region.

I'm sorry it's not much easier. But if you do this, it helps me immensely.

SITE PROBLEMS AND SUGGESTIONS
If anything is wrong with the site, let me know. I'll try to fix it.

Otherwise, I've been working very hard on resolving long to-do lists for the site and forum. Any suggestions are welcomed.

BANS
I can kick this function of the thread off with a list of the Special Ed people who were permanently banned, and those who were subsequently banned after reacting badly to the new rules topic. Moderators are encouraged to report their temporary bans in this topic, too.

Out of curiosity, do you approach banning a BCI member the same way you would any other? I was looking through the profiles of the people in the "Ban List" to see the last posts that got them banned in the first place, and noticed that SushiJaguar's profile had him classified as "BCI Member" rather than "Banned" as is usual for banned people. Did he not get banned, or is his 'Group' placement simply left unchanged?
  • #2

Lark was a BCI member too, I believe.
  • #3

Yeah he was Jerk, maybe Suitcase just accidentally didn't change it, or Sushi is only allowed to see the BCI exclusive thread.
  • #4

The way titles stick is kinda stupid. He's stills BCI member, but he's also banned.

Does a BCI member who is banned have his BCI subscription instantly terminated, or are they allowed to view the special forum, but not post? Say for example, someone does something banworthy a couple days after they renewed their subscription, would they be allowed to view but not post in said BCI forum until their sub runs out, then banned? or is it just, "tough luck" and they are closed out at the time of banning?

sorry, I've been wondering for quite a bit, thought I'd ask.
  • #6

I have no idea if banned people can even read any of the forum when logged in. I don't understand Invision entirely.

The forum is supposed to be ancillary to the /members/ site, which will always be the first place where content is posted. If you're banned, you can certainly continue to use that. You paid for it, after all.

A certain numbnut assumes that the only way to access the BCI members stuff is through the forum, which is incorrect. There is a members site, the Advanced Placement site was done for kicks. So people still get all the content that they paid for.

Getting audio ads all of a sudden.
Three within a 30m period. Something abour Proactiv, which led into another about shopping at a farmer's market.

http://img163.images...31201212404.png
http://img39.imagesh...31201212432.png
"thyme and parsley. Or basil"
"so aromatic"

what else am I supposed to cite?
Getting on that
There's not a lot under that category in the page source or in my "Inspect Element" function

<div id="ad_forumrectangle" class="ad-top">
<object type="text/html" data="/ads/rectangle_abovefold.html" width="300" height="250"></object></div>

For the sake of investigating every possibility, I went to that above url and copied it's source code, although I doubt that's what you're after either: it probably says the same thing every time
Spoiler

Using "Inspect Element" on the ad itself gives a bit more:

I got a video ad about "Biggest Loser." I'd think it was speaking to me but I'm only 138 pounds at 5'11". :x I found it at the bottom right--you know, next to the users. I would screenshot it but the page is kind of fucked up now due to all the messing around I did. Anyway, here's the code that I retrieved.

http://i43.tinypic.com/2127jtk.png

As you can see, six lines didn't fit. I don't know how to mass copy + paste the code so I had to copy and paste each line one at a time. All of the six are inside this spoiler. I warn you, these lines will stretch the page when you open it, unless this forum has automatic word wrap. I'm sorry, I'm just not aware of another way to handle this. :< Also, I stuck the spoilers within spoilers (spoilerception!) so you'd only have to deal with one at a time.

Spoiler

And suddenly the page isn't screwed up anymore, so here... Let me take a picture.

e21d5b5301f70da3dfd301583695e5d8.png

I'll leave both the command window and the tab with the ad open in case you want anything else. But I hope this helped!

EDIT: Excellent, this forum /does/ have a word wrap, it seems.

EDIT2: DAMMIT I forgot to open two of them. Hang on, lemme fix this.

EDIT3: Fuck, I lost the tab due to my browser screwing up... I guess I'll just have to refresh ad infinitum until I get it.

EDIT4: Now ads aren't even showing up! I'm sorry, SuitCase. I might not be able to find that ad for a while, so I guess this whole post was pointless. ;__;

^^Take note: ad_leaderboard refers to the ad at the top of the page
ad_rectangle refers to the ones found inside posts that have a 4:3 ratio

know that your screencap above refers to the long ad at the top of the page.

(it's fine, I did the same thing first time. sometimes my OCD of quintuple-checking pays off)

Oh, fuck me. I thought my first time would be better than that... There wasn't even an ad at the top of the page when I screenshotted, though. And there still isn't. It's just a gray space.
  • #12

That really sucks. Unfortunately, what sucks more is that all of the work you guys did to show me didn't help at all.

  • Using "view source" isn't gonna help, because the ad chain is followed with javascript. You must view the generated source using the Safari/Chrome web inspector, Opera's Dragonfly or Firefox's Firebug.
  • This image from Dr. Klaus should have included the relevant information, but for some reason it's only half-rendered. Perhaps the ad hadn't loaded in at the time the screenshot was taken.
  • Like Klaus says, you took the details of the leaderboard ad, Lux. I can identify that you're showing a Google AdSense ad there, at least.

So I'm not sure what to do right now. You received video ads from either AdSense, Contextweb, Six Apart or Technorati Media. I'm actually completely unsure which of these it would be, so unless I was to shut off all four networks, I can't take any real action without more information. :(
  • #13

Would it be, then, that if I happened to come across the same ad, that I should just try to find the appropriate space and show everything there and perhaps it would help?

Or are you saying that perhaps the "Inspect Element" method isn't going to work?
  • #14

My browser does have a little doohickey in the corner that tells me what part of a webpage is loading at a certain time. Sometimes it might say "Connecting to ads.sixapart.com..." sometimes Contextweb or AdSense, so I could keep an eye on that and identify which notification shows up on pages with sound ads.

This post has been edited by Dr. Klaus: 31 March 2012 - 04:57 PM

  • #15

The former, Lux.

And Klaus, that might be a good idea except that the way that ad chains work is that they go through multiple providers. This wouldn't really give me a definitive answer. I think the best way to do it is to use the web inspector.

I use Adblock Plus on Firefox 11. It offers the option to right-click and "Inspect Element". I can then drill in and paste whatever code I find. So maybe I'll disable Adblock Plus just for bittersweetcandybowl.com, and keep an eye out for bad ads.
  • #17

Got a talking ad, shut up when I clicked it, got screen caps of everything in the <div id="ad_leaderboard" class="ad-top"> bit

  • #18

I had better change the text to ad_rectangle, because I guess you guys don't read the instructions in full.
  • #19

Did all the problems go away? If not, I still need to disable the rogue ad network.
  • #20

So far I haven't heard any. I'll let you know if it happens again.
  • #21

If it helps, I haven't seen any ads since that one time the video ad showed up. So maybe they stopped or something...
  • #22

Remember this topic? Should I ban someone to make things more interesting?
  • #23

Well, all I have to report about the old problem is that it showed up once--and I tried to capture it, but just as I was in the process of doing that, there was a power-out. This was maybe... a month ago.
  • #24

You should consider it a blessing, Suit, that you haven't had a bunch of problems to deal with.

Hey for some odd reason on my iPhone it shows forum avatar pictures (usually migrant's) over the back to topic button which is then shoved to the side.

Kind of weird/

I'd just like to let you know that I received a "Your BCI membership has expired" email.

However, I renewed it months ago and the Member Services center says I'm renewed up to March 2013.
  • #32

How embarrassing. I sent a few people the email by mistake. I've only had two reports of this, though, so I assume it wasn't all that many people..?
  • #33

I just figured it was an outdated auto-mailing list that slipped through the cracks.

Is anyone else unable to open spoiler tags in posts? They sometimes open if I click it within 2 seconds of the page opening, but after that, I can't get them to open or close.

Just checking to see if it's a known problem. It's most likely my shitty internet more than anything else.

Sometimes, things that are spoiler-ed are direct linked and when the content is deleted, the box doesn't really expand. Does this sound like a possibility?

Also, what browser n such?

A lot of the times, the spoilers just have pure text in them, with no multimedia or links. If it happens to even the most recent posts, I wouldn't expect it to be that.

Using Chrome, if that helps.

EDIT: Randomly fixed itself. Must've been my internet.

Possible Bug Report

I've been trying to replace my avatar from Sonic to Tails 'cause of the rule saying your avatar must be "cute" and I thought "Great Scot! Tails! Of course!" So I've gone to change my avatar more than once and noticed it says that Tails is my current Avatar picture but when I check my posts it's still Sonic.

Is this a problem I just need to wait out or is it much more serious than that?

Edit: NOW it's working!

ICouldntThinkOfAName was banned because he asked to be banned.

And yeah, image caching issues can sometimes happen. Glad it resolved itself

Not sure if this is an issue with Kickstarter or what, but I figure I should let you know. For me at least, the homepage's superimposed countdown doesn't match the hours left on the actual banner. It seems to match up on the Candybooru version, just not the homepage's.

Confirmed, I see the same thing as well. The Candybooru time is correct.

Reviewing the Javascript used for the countdown timer, the problem lies within the servertimestring variable, as two different times were used.

Just a quick bug report, page 9 of Carry Me won't load for me, the est o the chapter works fine. I've reloaded it about 4 times over 20 minutes and the error hasn't gone away. Here's what the page says:
"

Bittersweet Candy Bowl
Internal Comic Reference Error!

Hey, wait. Reload the page! The site is probably being updated right now and you loaded it halfway through a file upload. It seems like a comic that we’re internally referencing isn’t accessible. If the error persists, let me know!

Sorry for the inconvenience! —Your site admin, SuitCase (Email link)

If you want to find yourself again, you can go to the Bittersweet Candy Bowl homepage, or maybe the comic archives.

Indeed, the fault is not with Linux, for I get the same error also, on Windows 7 (Firefox and IE) and the iPad 2 (Safari). Unless you're trying to blame your own server. ^_^
