It appears that Anonymous has come up with another plan "to save the internet and preserve basic human rights"

*cough* Utter bullshit *cough*
  • #2

Yeah I figured that they most likely won't be able to do it since it would probably take the biggest botnet in exsistence.

It's the plot to Die Hard 4 and terribly unrealistic and stupid to anyone with even a remote grasp of how the Internet works.

Good thing for this trail of urine they've scared out of me. If I wasn't so turned on, I would be panicking.

This is an obvious hoax. What day are they threatening to take down the internet? March 31st. What day comes after that?

Hm. I wonder.

Anyway, point is:

1) This isn't Anonymous.
2) Anonymous wouldn't do this anyway (they LIKE the internet, shutting it down is hardly their style).
3) They lack the capability to do it anyway, even if it was Anonymous.

I'm not sure if I would be happy or not if it actually does go down. Not for more than a day of course, then I would get pissed, but if it went down for an hour or something I would think it's pretty cool. Then I would start worrying about the security of the internet (as if there're aren't enough security issues). It's like that feeling you get on christmas eve, you know that there is no such a thing as Santa Claus, but you still feel anticipation. But if some hobo did manage to get on my roof and down my chimney, I would probably be going for the shotgun, not the milk and cookies.

I don't know, I don't find it completely inconceivable that Anonymous might attempt to briefly shut down the internet to say "this is what SOPA and such are trying to do." It's not likely, but I wouldn't rule it out entirely.

Empty threats. How cute

I'm assuming that this is going to be an April Fool's joke. On the 31st, nothing will happen, and on 4/1, they reveal it as a prank.

The Internet is hardly perfectly safeguarded, but I still find it hard to believe that they could manage to bring down the whole network - barring that they organised somebody to go into the Atlantic Ocean with an axe and some very big scissors. Yet I cannot help but feel poetically inspired by the attempt, should it be serious and reasonably successful. ^_^

Even if they took out the "key" servers like they plan, they wouldn't even nick the 'net. It's bullshit, the infrastructure by now is too damn complex. If they did it in the 90's, then sure, they might be able to do it. But as of now, they'll have to target thousands of servers to even make most users feel the pain.

Let's not forget how remarkably pissed people were over a few websites blacking out; if they accomplish what they intend to they'll be hated by the very people they claim to be protecting. It's digital suicide.

Apparently, the major internet providers have a backup plan if that (ever) happens.
  • #14

Of course they have a back-up plan. I mean, by the logic of this plan, if something goes wrong with one of the DNS servers, then a lot of the sites on it would be inaccessible, unless they had them all backed up on another of the 13 servers they're talking about. Hell, there's probably a back-up back-up. Or at least, you'd hope so.
