Stephen King

Well, what do you think about him? And his books?
  • #1

The Shining was good. Cujo was all right but you're not missing anything by not reading it. However, pretty much everything else I've read by him is garbage. One major problem he has is his books tend to rely on Deus Ex Machina to resolve the plot, which when done properly can be clever (rarely is) but more often than not is just indicative of lazy writing.
  • #2

The Stand, the first three Gunslinger books and a little of the last three, Salem's Lot and The Talisman off the top of my head. Also the Green Mile and Shawshank Redemption. To find his good books, you have to climb mountains of shit.
  • #3

Talisman is amazing, would read again (and have read again). First three Gunslinger books are very good, it goes a bit down hill with 4,5,and 6, but 7 is ok. It is a good book, though makes absolutely no sense.
  • #4

The only book of his I read was Cujo. I thought it was alright, but the narrative was so grinding.
  • #5

Also Pet Sematary, Firestarter and The Dead Zone.

He is okay, made one too many novels. I can't read them all and some are hard to follow the absurdity of.

IT, the Dark Tower Series, Carrie, And Under the Dome.

I really didn't like 11/22/63 because I expected that JFK surviving would cause some kind of problem rather than some kind of shitty time travel theory. But I liked it when one of the victims from IT (Haggarty), Beverly, and Richie made a cameo.

who?

Don Haggarty, the gay guy who got killed by pennywise.

Needful Things continues to be one of my favorites.
  • #18

That was one of the first books I read by him. When I was, like, twelve. The image of the boy pulling the trigger of a shotgun with his toe still lingers to this day.

I love Stephen King's writing (for the most part).

The Long Walk: underrated and unknown masterpiece. It was the first book he ever wrote (Carrie was the first to be published) when he was 18. Very emotional with great characters.

The Dead Zone: Outstanding.

Dolores Claiborne: Amazing.

The Eyes of the Dragon: Different and fascinating.

The Mist: Too short but good.

Cell: The only book by Stephen King I didn't like. I HATED this book. It was boring as hell.

Salem's Lot: First book I read by King. Also really good.

Dolores Claiborne was fucking terrible, but it's in line with your faggot tastes.
  • #21

I don't really enjoy Stephen King at all nor can I pretend to think that he's a good writer. He's competent, obviously, but I've never picked up one of his novels and thought, "man, that was a great read!"

Then that means you have forgotten the face of your father. Cry off.

Hey, you asked for it. In no way did you start this as a Stephen King glorification thread, but I guess that's where the road ends in these posts.
  • #24

If you only read up to the third book, you never learn disdain for the rest of the series.

Also Salem's Lot, Pet Sematary, The Stand, Green Mile, Shawshank Redemption, off the top of my head.

It does go downhill to me after the fourth, i guess.

I don't care about what you think about him, besides, you were asking for it. It wasn't supposed to be taken seriously.

Look: the last four books had some seriously awesome moments in them. Just completely fucking awesome. But not enough to shake off all the awkward and patently terrible storytelling techniques.
  • #27

The including himself in the book and most of the Deus ex machina events made me cringe, killing the awesome moments. On the bright side: Harry Potter and Doctor Doom.

And there's 9 DT books. The Original 7 + Wind through the Keyhole (4.5), which was awesome, and The Little Sisters of Eluria, which I didn't read yet.

My favorite Stephen King books/mini tv series is IT and the shinning
what i really want to read is 11/22/63
  • #29

Oh, i have It's miniseries on DVD.
I never got around to finishing The Stand's miniseries.
The ending to 11/22/63 was kind of sad.
  • #30

The girl who loved tom gordon' was the first book i read by king.

Any film/movie/TV adaptation of a Stephen King book is destined to suck. The Nostalgia Critic says it all.

Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, and Stand By Me (don't complain about the Lardass scene, you puss)

Your logic is incredibly flawed.

Anyway, I'm still on the third book in the Dark Tower (Wastelands). From what I've heard on the internet (like the posts above), the last four aren't that stellar, so I'm preparing to take a nosedive if needed.

Don't forget The Shining and Running Man (1987)

The thing about The Shining the Movie is as an adaptation of a book, its fucking terrible. Ole Stanly missed practically every fucking point in the book, not to mention Jack Nicholson was one of the worse casting choices ever for that part. Now note I said book adaptation, as a movie its still great, though I find it to be one of Kubrick's weaker films. He completely changed the character of Jack from what it was suppose to be and thus messed up the relationships he was suppose to have with his wife and son, it just misses a lot of the heart that was in the book and honestly kinda takes some of the scary parts down a bit as how they came off in the book, which remains to this day to be the only book I cannot read at night. Which is why they remade it as a mini series that much better represents the book and gets the heart the movie was missing.

As for other shitty adaptions...It is by far the worse of the whole lot, its absolutely horrid, the acting is stale and its just a gigantic UGH considering its based off one of my favorite King doorstoppers. I actually wrote a paper comparing the book and movie in 10 grade, it was full of hate. But don't get me wrong all his books have things I dont like about them, whether it be the magical Deus Ex Machina or just weird fucking scenes like
Spoiler
But the thing that keeps me coming back is his characters and the huuuuuuuuge amount of time he uses to develop them so you really like and care about them.

Also Good books you guys haven't mentioned: The Stand i'm fucking stupid Jerk said this first post, The Regulators, Insomnia, and Misery which it's movie was also pretty good.

I always wondered why he put in the sex scene in It, and why couldn't he just choose another way for them to rebond.
  • #38

One more thing about The Dark Tower: the seventh book. What the fuck, Steve? "You can't read this part. You shouldn't read this part. BUT I'M GONNA PUT IT HERE SO YOU CAN READ IT ANYWAY BECAUSE I CAN-BEFUCKING-NOT CONTROL MYSELF." If you don't want your fans to read it, don't put it in the book you enormous faggot. This is why that van driver hit you. It was a down payment on the beating you would deserve by the time you were done penning that last insipid shit.

We'd try it on Stephanie Meyer ten times over but

YOU CAN'T STOP THE BLOB

Yeah cause I was happy with figuring out what happened to my LEAST favorite character of the main five (Fuck you guys Oy is the best). I mean who would get to that part and just be like "Oh a few more pages left of this seven book series i've been readin? Eh fuck it I'm happy with what I got so far DERP DERP." I would love to meet the person that really didn't read that last bit.
  • #40

I liked the ending.
  • #41

I'm talking about how he introduced it.
  • #42

Oh, yeah, that sucked. The way he did it was like a philosophical girl about to take your virginity.
