They're not trained in martial arts, I doubt either of them would attempt actual attacks aside from just punching and kicking. And because of this, attempting to "read" the other person like that would be a waste of time. That aside, without any sort of practise, it's ridiculously hard to even attempt to read someones movements, and unless Mike was born as a fighting demigod, he probably wouldn't be able to.

@ Mace: listen - you read a person's body language whether you're trained or not. Some people are better at it than others but it's still a definite factor in any fight. Think about the value judgments you made before regarding strength: you look at someone and you make an estimation of their strength in reference to your own. You can acknowledge that much, right? It's not a far jump in one's imagination from that estimation to the process of reading body language or to the concept of proper interpretation as a talent one can possess. It's minute, but bear with me. They're related, both calculating and, I feel, justified in their classification as strategic. It's not the best term to describe it, no, but it's still something that happens. And I think if you slow it down enough you'll see that aspect of it too.

@ Meowth: I think if you look at it closely enough there's a cleverness to it that you can't appreciate at an inspection of any greater complexity the way you can appreciate ingenious tweaks to, say, a jet engine that you couldn't notice looking at the device as a whole.

I get where you're going with that, but I really can't stress enough how little that would matter in this kind of fight.
Had they been boxing or something along those lines, it would make much more of a difference.

If it were any other kind of fight I'd concede that point but we already know the outcome and it's already accepted as a factor that Mike's calculations, small or large, play a role in his victory. Evidently, he knows enough for it to tip the scales in his favor so we're not arguing from a point of all things being equal. It doesn't sound plausible, but we've been assuming all along the different kinds of fights where this would and wouldn't matter. If I remember correctly, he (and Lucy too, I think) actually does have some kind of training in martial arts. If that's the case, he probably has some experience in the kind of reading I've been talking about. What we know about the factors of the fight so far seem to support this.

3 or so street fights, though I got interrupted each time.
I've only been sparring when boxing properly.

I honestly see no reason to hate Mike, he's young, he makes hormonal decisions that he may regret in the future, he just needs to grow up a bit. If he ends up regretting what he did he might fix it, but who knows? If anything I want to see how the story goes.

Mike's an alright guy. His sense of self-righteousness is wack, but that was probably the result of being antagonized by half of his friends for years and years.

He does deserve to feel guilty about being a melodramatic pansy, though.
