Mm. Indeed. :{I

So what are your favorite games? What's your favorite genre? Why do you like *INSERT TITLE HERE*?
What games aren't you fond of? Why?
What games are you psyched about coming out this year?

I'm really interested in your tastes; I actually may have missed a good game while working! And hear your pleads as to games to never play; the horrible, unspeakable, the control smashing horror... *shudders*

But before you start:

The question is, will you stay or go after detention?

Oh and i'm starting to play The devil on a g-string, with the no-nudity and English patch.

Me, I like every genre except sports and racing; geared more towards RPGs and action. I can't remember every favorite so here comes the list:
Mass Effect series. Suikoden 2,3,&5. Disgaea series
Devil May Cry series (except 2). Elder Scrolls Skyrim. Batman: Arkham Asylum/City
Monster Hunter series. Lost Odyssey. Psychonauts
Okami + Okamiden. Catherine. Fallout 3
"Tales of ___" series. Shadow of the Colossus. Beyond Good and Evil
Final Fantasy 4,6,7,8,9,10 and 12. Saints Row the 3rd. Borderlands
Infamous 1 + 2. Uncharted Trilogy. El Shaddai
Ratchet & Clank series. Any game that has 'Shin Megami Tensei' in the title. Pokemon....
....I'll stop there. When you work in this part of retail, you need to know your stuff. And that's by playing them.
Kinect Star Wars? Hell NO, here, take El Shaddai because it plays exactly like DMC and the graphics are so mind-blowing, your eyes will cry rainbows. And your God's right-hand man so you go out there and kill seven archangels who thought it'd be cool to ditch their heaven duties to live as mortals. Yeah, Kinect Star Wars doesn't seem so great now does it?
The rest would take all day to tell you why, so I'll just post a few at a time...*El Shaddai*

I'm not very fond of Call of Duty or any other games that are really just 12 hours long and everthing else is multiplayer. Plus the jerk-to-mature ratio on the servers I've been on lean towards a 13 year-old who's mouth wouldn't be fit to kiss a wh***.

Kinda looking forward to Dragon's Dogma; the demo comes out the 25, so I'll need to DL, AC 3 and Persona 4 Arena, but what I'm GLEE about is this:

THAT'S RIGHT: A GODDAMN ONE PIECE/DYNASTY WARRIOR TO NA. WHEN'S NOVEMBER?!! 8-D

A few weeks ago we had an open gaming topic that we were forced to close because it became a mega-thread about random topics on video games. We'd rather not have those kinds of threads, but instead have threads with a topic so they don't just become topics with pages and pages of disjointed posts.

This thread's started out with a very broad topic, I'd rather it simply just focus on Your favourite games, Genre's you like, games you aren't fond of, what you're looking forward to. Just to keep things organised. We can have multiple gaming threads just so long as they pertain to a topic.

Well, I have played many games, but atop all of them I think the best are these three: Professor Layton and the last time travel (or the unwound future), [i]Portal 2,
and [i]Legend of Zelda: The wind Waker
. The reason I love these three so much is because they each gave me full enjoyment, and the first two actually gave me feelings for the characters. And their back stories have so much depth. And as much as I like Nintendo, they don't give their characters enough of a backstory.

Games I dislike: NFL Foot ball games. I mean, really?!? If you want to play foot ball, go outside!! (unless your handicapped. Then you have a reason.) I also really don't like cooking mama games. If you're going to make a cooking game, AT LEAST MAKE IT A LITTLE REALISTIC!!! So, yeah... There's my rant... =__=

I also like skyrim.

Favourite game of all time, easily, would be Solatorobo: Red the Hunter.
Good story. (arguably)
Great gameplay. (arguably)
Interesting ideas.
Fun characters.
Lots of references to Tail Concerto and Mamoro-kun.
Probably the best graphics of any NDS game.
Best fishing minigame ever.

Oh, that's no problem, I think I just got a little carried away. I just thought it'd be great to make a thread to talk about games and then get people to think "Oh that game sounds interesting; maybe I'll check it out."

I really enjoyed Solatorobo, too. I was pretty unsure until I heard my friend tell me about it. I...never finished it; I got to the part where you think the game's over, but it's not(did an Okami!). It was on loan, errgh >.<
Some of the spoken dialogue sounded French...? Was it?
The fighting parts of S:RtH was a little too cut and dry for me, though. I'd recommend it to those starting out with action-RPGs.
But yeah, one of the best fishing minigames indeed!

Well, a lot of people dislike the story of the second part because it goes against everything stated up until then, but whatever.
Gameplay wise, it gets a lot better in the second half. More types of the Dahak to use, each with special types of throws, a super form, and many more quests.
It also has a New Game+, which lets you use better parts and even more versions of the Dahak.
Aaaaand... It has New Game++, which lets you use the best version of the Dahak! (I think it's called Omega, not too sure. I'm only on my second playthrough right now.)
And yes, it's French.

All in all, I think it has about 60 hours of gameplay if you do every quest and race a little.

Okami(PS2, Wii) and Okamiden(DS) are most likely my top favorite games. In Okami, you play the reincarnation of the Japanese sun god, Amaterasu, whose job is to rid the land of Nippon from darkness and restore beauty and peace to the land.
In Okamiden, you play as the child of the sun god(adorably called Chibiterasu), who's called upon to protect Nippon, like his mother did several months ago. Unlike Okami, Okamiden's gameplay let's you team up with the children of Japanese mythology's gods and heroes.

Everything about the games are amazing; the graphics are rendered in beautiful watercolor, unlike any other game on the market. The gameplay is engrossing and full of puzzles and action that mostly requires strategy to beat enemies. Old-school Japanese instruments are used for the soundtrack; from calm, upbeat music while traversing plains to intense, fast-paced music when taking on enemies, again it's like no other soundtrack on the market(if it wasn't for the price, I'd certainly buy the OST!). Scenes range from funny and lighthearted to serious and intense. The only downside is probably the 'voice acting,' which is a series of mumbles. Okamiden's graphics are slightly less mesmerizing since it's on the DS and the overall ingame world is more restricted than Okami.

If you have the right console to play it on and come across it(both are very difficult to find, unfortunately), I highly recommend picking it up. Hopefully in the future, it will be released as an HD release on the PS3; it definitely deserves it.

I disagree, I found the graphics of Okami to be pretty... Bad, to be honest.
And I found the gameplay repetetive and tedious, sorry.
  • #11

Okami has come to be one of my favorite games. The water color art direction of it is a work of sheer beauty, and actually makes the graphics work for it IMO, though if possible they could do with a bit of touching up and that would make it look simply divine. (hah puns)

But enough about Okami, at least for now.

I have 4 specific games I'm looking forward to getting at the moment and those are:

The Xenoblade Chronicles: It's actually out at the moment but I'm too indecisive and can't decide about getting it or waiting for the other games I'm looking forward to. This has been a title i've been awaiting since it was released in Europe, and I find the story to be touching and the gameplay to be entertaining.

Prototype 2: This is a title that's just about to be released at this moment in time, and it looks like it has improved a lot from it's predecessor in terms of gameplay mechanics and story. I found the first one to be a fairly decent experience, and so I'm more than willing to try this. Not to mention there is a sweet trailer for it.

Sly 4 Thieves in Time: I've been a fan of the series since I was a child, and I hate leaving a series of any sort unfinished, and that this game that should let me have a good time with feelings of nostalgia.

Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance: Much of the same reasons as above except slightly more fanatacal.

Totally pick up Xenoblade Chronicles; it's probably one of the best(if only few) RPGs on the Wii. I mean the setting's on a dormant giant! If I hadn't sold my Wii, I would really pick up XC. Also check out The Last Story; it's supposed to come out in the summer for the Wii and I've been hearing good things about it. It's developed by Mistwalker, the developer's who made Lost Odyssey(1 of few games to make me cry!) AND headed by FF creator Hironobu Sakaguichi.
BIO BOMB BUTT-KICKERRR~
LOVE Sly Cooper! I'm really looking forward to it too! To be able to play as some of Sly's ancestors is awesome, plus it's in the hands of a realiable developer, uh Sanzaru? They did the HD Trilogy for the PS3. It looks like they're doing a really good job; I really hope it comes out this fall, because it's listed as 1/1/13(usually reserved for undecdied street dates) under our reservation list.

Still waiting for Kingdom Hearts 3...

I have been playing through a couple of action/shooter games. Their story and content /gameplay have not been up to my opinion for the value. It makes me wonder if we really are stuck paying high prices for pretty games that aside from the greater ability to have more on-screen, do not offer much more to the player than games of past.

NOOOO HOW CAN I FORGET NAUGHTY DOGGG?
The Last of Us is their new game to be released. Plot is...remember that fungus that controls ants and forces them to kill themselves so they can grow from their corpse from Planet Earth?Picture that but with humans being infected. You play a guy named Joel who is hired to sneak a teenage girl named Ellie out of the military-controlled quarantine zones; stuff goes horribly wrong and Joel promises to get Ellie to the set destination. Cross country vacation anybody?

Since we're on the topic of Naughty Dog, I heart Uncharted! Action-adventure with shooting, you play as Nathan Drake, whose great-great-greatXwhatever grandfather was the famous explorer Sir Francis Drake and his goal in life is to find all of what his ancestor discovered hundreds of years ago. First one, Drake's Fortune, sends Drake to South America to find the greatest treasure in El Dorado. The second one, Among Theives, journeys across Nepal and the Himalayas to find the sacred city of Shambhala. The third, Drake's Deception, takes him across the Arabian Peninsula to find the Atlantis of the Sands, a city said to contain unlimited wealth. All 3 games do have some supernatural elements that pretain to each game setting's cultural mythology.
All three games play out like a goddamn summer blockbuster movie, the Dark Knight kind of blockbuster, with plot and story and character development, i.e, not Transformers. Once the game gets in gear, the action, mystery, and suspense do not let up until the very end. The graphics are very, very well rendered and the music is tense and suspensful, but not to the point where you're white-knuckling your controller. Each main character is very likable and even realistic; Sully is like the cool uncle you wish you had. The villan's are very realistic too; many a time did I want to physically punch Lazarevic's fat head(fromU2).
Plus, those Game of the Year titles are pretty hard to obtain; Drake's Fortune won 25, all from different publications, academies and orgainizations.
IMO, if you have a PS3 and haven't played Uncharted, then you're not a Playstation 3 owner ;)

EDIT: Ugh, I feel like a troll, throwing out posts left and right.

My favorite game would have to be Legend of Zelda: Orcarina of Time No matter how old I get, I always feel like a kid again when I play it. Currently I'm just waiting patiently for Diablo 3.
  • #17

I feel like Ocarina is so overrated. Sure it was awesome, and it made me fall in love with Zelda, but honestly I enjoyed A Link to the Past, Majora's Mask, and Wind Waker more. (Still haven't bought Skyward Sword)

I enjoy the mechanics of the top down zelda games more for some reason too, I guess they have a lot of charm to me, I spent a long time beating Link's Awakening and both the Oracle games.

The one zelda game I've never managed to beat (that I own) is Zelda II, because holy fuck that game is unforgiving.

What games were they? I could recommend some titles if I know what you played.
  • #19

I never liked Zelda. At all.
I don't know why, I just find it to be...
I really don't know why I don't like them, I just don't.
  • #20

I don't know CaptainBacon, two old guys duking it out? ;) ~WA-HINK
Seriously, Kojima is a crazy-genius bastard.

IYO, what do you think of Metal Gear Rising: Revengance? I never got the chance to get into the MG series; was more along the gameplay lines like Splinter Cell, right? I was never good at the serious stealth games, too twitchy :3

I think it's in good hands, developer-wise; Platinum Games(previously Clover Studios before dissolution and merging with another company) made Okami, Viewtiful Joe, Bayonetta and MadWorld and those were hella entertaining...I may have to look into it more.
  • #21

MGS and Splinter Cell have similar concepts, but the gameplay styles have nothing in common.
  • #22

No opinion at all. I have barely seen much more than a few game show trailers and that is not enough to form an opinion of it on.

Splinter Cell was too mature for my age when it was popular, so I never got to see it in action plus you know, Xbox.

~
Killzone 2/3
Medal Of Honor

But it is certainly no indication of the types of games I enjoy the most. I tried a demo of Uncharted 2, and just felt rushed throughout the entire level. It would not just let me sit there and pick off enemies at my leisure.
  • #23

My personal faves are RPGS, action/adventure, and puzzle/strategy games. I like Terranigma, Xenogears, Zone of the Enders, Shadow of Colossus, Metal Gear, Assassin's Creed, Little Big Planet, Katamari, Golden Sun series, the Mario RPG games, and the Tales series. I've had a Famicom since I was 7 and really enjoyed Solomon's Key. I also really like Super Puzzle Fighter and Tetris Attack. Other notable games are Sonic, Trauma Center, the Layton series, Ace Attorney series, Spyro, Okami, Zelda, Plants vs. Zombies, Wario Series, Star Craft, and Counter Strike. I occasionally enjoy fighting games, such as Bloody Roar, Dead or Alive, Super Smash Bros. series, Street Fighter, and Marvel vs. Capcom..admittedly I'm not as great at fighting games but I still enjoy them. For a while I was really into MMOs, but not WoW..I played Ragnarok Online on and off for ten years.

To be honest I can go on and on about the games I love to play. I'm a bit sad that I don't have much time to play them, now, but I am currently playing MGS HD collection and Kirby's Return to Dreamland when I have the time (I'm talking like, 30min to an hour). I have just beaten Layton and the Last Specter but intending on getting 100% like I did the previous games. I'm also pretty sad that there's no Miles Edgeworth Investigations coming to the US. :'(

I know Xenoblade has been out, and I would really like to play that. I'm waiting for localizations of a few games such as The Last Story, Mask of Miracle, and generally a handful of other Japanese games.

I typically don't like sports games, save for this baseball game we had for our Genesis. Sport games are just boring for me to play..unless it's Wii's sports or Hot Shots Golf (PS), if that counts. XD

Miles Edgeworth Investigations should definitely get a US and European release, I agree.
  • #25

A bit wary about a general video game topic, but what the hell, I'll regurgitate (oh my god, I spelled that right on my first try!) the same thing I said in the original thread.
I enjoy shooters and RTS games the most, I like to dabble in action/adventure titles, survival horror, or the occasional fighting game. I avoid sports and racing games, they generally don't appeal to me unless I'd be playing with people I like.

Lately I've been hooked on Shogun 2: Fall of the Samurai and Battlefield 3.
  • #26

My favorite game is hands down Metro 2033. The atmosphere in it is just perfect. The S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series is also one of my faves.
I don't know, but I just like post-apocolypse genre games in general. Besides those I really like RTS games like Red Alert, Total War and Age of Empires
  • #27

Most people that frequent the Skype calls on friday will know that I am a huge fan of the Jak and Daxter Series. Ratchet and Clank, Vanquish, League of Legends. etc.

With Jak and Daxter and R&C its just I grew up with these series and I LOVED platformers as a kid. It was actually these two series that made me want to get a PS3.

Vanquish, is a REALLY fun game, its a fast paced 3rd person shooter with you in a high tech mecha suit fighting robots...cant get any better than that? Along with fast paced Mecha games another series I loved was Zone of The Enders. The first game was an awesome title when I was young. I think if you bought it back then you got a demo of the latest Metal Gear Solid game back then. The fast paced mecha fighting was everywhere and it was executed perfectly. The sequel was in my opinion a true example of what a sequel should be. It added so many new features and weapons to the game, better graphics, more fluent controls. New story but stayed within the lines of still making sense with the previous game. All while having the same feel of the first game. Upgrading everything the first game had and put it into Zone of The Enders: The 2nd Runner. I'd pop this badass in my PS2 anyday for the replay value. I was blown away when they announced that they are releasing an HD edition AND developing a 3rd title.

League of Losers...I dont know, I just like the competition?

Shooters...meh, they are getting pretty dumb now.

Since I just got a PS3 I've been loving it, playing a few exclusives such as Killzone and Heavy Rain. Killzone was decent. But I LOVED Heavy Rain. The only complaint I would give while playing it was my room mate just wouldnt shut the fuck up constantly saying "This isnt a game! You're just watching a movie! I'm going to rage and find people who agree with me!"

Shame, we hardly ever get any Phoenix Wright titles in our store; it's either Justice for All or Trials and Tribulations, but almost never Ace Attorney. I played the 2nd one before the first and was a little confuseld in some parts, so I recommend the first one, but it's always:
"Oh, you've never heard of Phoenix Wright? It is an awesome series-*looks up game, only have Justice for All*....ergh." I hope that Layton/AA crossover gets a NA release...
Totally pick up Xenoblade, it's really good! As for The Last Story, it has a release date of Summer 2012 in NA. I'll have to check on Mask of Miracle.
If you like Japanese games, really check out Ni No Kuni; it's being developed by Level 5 AND Studio Ghibli.

You rock. I loved that game as well (in case you couldn't tell from my post-apocalyptic geekiness). I never did play STALKER since my PC couldn't run it at the time, but Metro was a good replacement for me. While I won't say the gameplay is original (it had a lot of annoying design problems, like broken stealth), I decided to stick with it because I really fell in love with the atmosphere. Crank that game up to high settings if you can run it, and you got a nice visual treat. The pacing was definitely not as fast or explosive as your usual FPS, which really gave you time to absorb the world around you. You're just some average joe, in some creepy underground society taking on hellish monsters. Awesome. Here's one of my favorite scenes, though it's easier to appreciate in the context of actually playing it.

It's a real shame the game did not get much attention. Hopefully the sequel adds to the original.

Sucks that I don't have a 360; I heard Metro 2033 was a very interesting game and yes, Marshmallow it is a shame, such games are usually overshadowed by the larger, well known titles; if you're not backed by a well-known publisher(EA, Activision) or don't advertise enough, it may as well be thrown into the darkest part of the entertainment business.
Games like Okami, El Shaddai, the Megaten and Disgaea series and a lot more are very fun and/or well designed, but they are obscure, but it's not like it's a bad thing either; all of the titles I mentioned (the ES devs said it's possible) have all gotten sequels or spinoffs of the series.

All it takes is one person and their word of mouth to ignite the world of underground titles!
  • #33

And to reply to my earlier post:
The next game by Capcom is Dragon's Dogma; a Western action RPG that will hopefully get Capcom back in the saddle. Main plot: your created character gets their heart stolen by some douchebag dragon and it's up to you to find said dragon and get your heart back. Enter massive world of Oblivion and gameplay of D&D and Resident Evil survival (DON'T go out at night. Seriously.) and you have Dragon's Dogma. You also got the Pawn System, your teammates, which you can send to your buddies game and gain EXP, money and knowledge and vice versa.

Demo's out on Live and PSN now; game comes out May 22. Cool thing, the character you make in the demo, you can import to the real game; not sure about items and levels though.
(Haven't tried the demo yet; still downloading. GODAMMIT INTERNET COONECTION. >:O )
  • #34

Tried out the demo to Dragon's Dogma.

HO-LY FUDGE, it was BOSS. Along with making a character and a pawn to import into the actual game, there's two quests you can do, the story prologue or a field mission and both involve giant monsters.

The story mission has you entering a cave, looking for the dragon that's obliterating your army. But more than a dragon is within...
Spoiler

The field mission's objective is to kill a griffin harrassing the city. You can play as your created character in this one. SO COOL! I was playing as my assassin, so I was in charge of archery and the like while my pawn was a swordsman. I demo gave me a mage to round out my team. Interaction with your cohorts is very entertaining; they shout out strategies and do actions that help you take out your target. Since it was a flying griffin,

@Chewy: Bethesda's going to give more details at this year's E3. The Snow Elf reference could be important, since the Nords and Snow Elves fought each other until the Nords drove them underground, where they became Falmer. Although it also mentions vampires.....
That's all I know.

@Mashmallow: Oh boy, another year, another CoD... :/

Persona Combos? New cutscenes? New areas? New character!? NA release Fall 2012?!!! I NEED VITA.

Aw, that's too bad! The Ace Attorney series is actually not too popular from where I am - it has increased in popularity especially with the installment of Apollo Justice, but in general, not too many of my gamer friends are into it. It's pretty unique since it's text based, and a lot of games are pretty fast paced these days. You should just order your games online. :3

I'll pick up Xenoblade when there's a sale, maybe..whenever that is! Bahaha. And yes, I've heard and seen shots of Ni No Kuni, it looks great. I really wish I had more time for gaming these days, but my time is filled with work and animation school. Maybe once I start working full time and have graduated, I'll only have to worry about being an adult, not a student, and have more time to game. :) I got soooo much to catch up on.

Video games I personally enjoy playing so far are the Kingdom Hearts series, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Gears of War 3, Assassin's Creed: Revelations, Skullgirls, Kid Icarus: Uprising, Super Mario 3D Land, Asura's Wrath and the Darkness II. I could list more, but it would be too much.

Regarding genres, I'm pretty open-minded, although i do stay away from certain genres such as MMO and Real-time strategy.

Games I'm not entirely fond of would be World of Warcraft and Everquest, simply because it takes too much time and it doesn't appear to have a good storyline, as far as I could tell.

As for upcoming video games, I'm looking forward to trying out Max Payne 3, Kingdom Hearts: 3D, Darksiders II, The Last of Us, Transformers: Fall of Cybertron, Bioshock: Infinite, Insane, RE 6 and Assassin's Creed III.

Hope this is enough.

@CaptainBaconMan: Ha, that was the first thing I saw when I opened up my mailbox today. I'm gonna give it a read through tonight.

But this is what I'm REALLY looking forward to from Bethesda.

@Nimbus26: Not a really big Transformers fan, but from what I've read and seen, it does look boss. I mean, a DINOSAUR TRANSFORMER; the little kid in me squeals.
Agh, I still need to play Asura's Wrath!

One week until Diablo 3 causes the Chosen to forget the Skyrim. I am going to miss the "impaled rape victim" decor of the first game, but it's still going to kick ass and everyone knows it.

I have waited over a decade for this.

The Diablo/Max Payne-midnight may be weird(since they both end in 3 and are on opposite spectrums), but nothing compares to Skyrim-midnight weird. :nope:
I'm guessing we'll never see you again *for another 3 months*?

"Hell" no. :smirk:

I'll play it a lot when I have free time and probably start a group in here for multiplayer and shit, but I just can't sit at a computer like that for that long. Anytime I post here it's either from an iPad or laptop. I get addicted to a lot of nasty stuff, but video games hasn't been a big thing for me in awhile, except Mass Effect and it's sequels but it never interfered in anything else I do.

So I've read the Elder Scrolls article. Here's the gist of it:
It takes place 1,000 years before Skyrim, before the Septim dynasty. Imperials are weakened by constant warfare in Tamriel, so the nobles forge a pact with The King of Worms, a necromancer who'll fuel the Imperial war machine with the fallen. But he's also scheming with the Daedric Prince of Domination to bring the mortal world under his reign. So there's a good reason for not 'dying;' you're already dead*soulless.*

It's basically Elder Scrolls gameplay after that; you're able to do whatever the hell you want. The combat includes a stamina bar: so a hack-n-slash warrior will lose more stamina, hence lose more power, than a play-it-smart warrior or the mage/archer shooting volleys. You need to play smart too. Enemy AI will pair up when outnumbered, will heal when needed; they'll basically do the same tactics any regular RPGer would do. So you'll need to gain the upper hand: interrupt and block attacks instead of running in, wildly swinging whatever weapon you have.
You can help others in battle; you're actually encouraged, since you'll get the same payout as the people you were helping(loot exp, etc).
There will also be PvP as well as a War for the Throne mechanic after the main playthrough. Like a Leaderboard thing, but Zenimax didn't really fill in a lot on this.
There's nine playable races and several of the Guilds will return from the previous ES games. There will be full voice acting and the scenes will be from Skyrim and Morrowind in the north to the Kahjiit's homeland of Elsweyr.
It's stamped for 2013, but there's no offical timeframe.

That's pretty much all of the biggies; if I forgot something, I'll add it on.

I don't touch MMOs; I get the feeling I'd be one of those addicts whose ass fuses into the chair. They'd call me 'chair-ass' but my ass would sure be comfortable. How would I get around...? I'd just fall from the weight of the chair par-OHMYGOD,MASSEFFECT. PSN, PC, Live?

I've never actually played an MMO. It seems like too much of a commitment. I need something I can just set down and pick up after a few months.

I didn't move onto the next Mass Effect sequel until I had every available achievement and DLC. It's the most important contribution to science fiction since Star Wars.
