New chapter, new thread.

Not quite what I expected to happen after last chapter! Paulo clearly has a gift for someone, but for whom? Jasmine is the most likely guess, though it's also possible he's already dropped off a gift at Jasmine's house and is now on his way to visit Lucy.

The 'cake' portion of the title makes me think it might be someone's birthday, but Lily is the character with the closest birthday (December 20), and she's relatively minor. Also Paulo seems far too worried about dropping that present for it to be for Lily.

I like the watercolours, it's a nice change of pace. I guess Taeshi has acquired sufficient practice with watercolours after doing "Ask Roseville High".

I see from the picture in the scanner fundraiser thread that there's definitely some Jasmine involved. Looks like she's building a snowman too. This could be a lighthearted chapter, as a break from all the drama. Paulo and Jasmine definitely do have fun together.

For now, I still like the previous style better but I've got plenty of time to give it a chance and see what you can do with it.

The art style is once again new...but I find that it looks messier than the LAST art style. I don't know; I just really miss the kind of colorization from chapters like Pillow Talk. The colorization in those older chapters was good because it was both consistent and brighter, so it popped.

Here, because of the water colors, the coloring is very pale and murky looking. But that's just my opinion; I'm sure I'll warm up to it like the last art style. :/

It's cool to see the watercolours being used in the main comic now. You get some sweet gradients, and the papery texture fits what snow and fur realistically looks like. The downsides have been mentioned already, the dilution.

I approve! I enjoy the style shifts that the comic goes through. I think I'd get sick of seeing the same style used chapter after chapter, personally.

[Edit: In my opinion, the paler colours suit the main cast and the winter season more, but I feel it's weakened the "impact" panels that previously used harsher colours and subtle, pen-drawn effects to reinforce a mood. It's a bit trickier to get that now with consistent splashes.]

It's sad that your scanner is messing with the image, but given what I've seen of Taeshi's skills with watercolor, I look forward to more of this style.

I wonder what's in the box? It's obviously a present of some kind. Sue's birthday is in January, but I thought Paulo and Sue didn't get along well; could it be a peace offering?

Edit: Completely forgot that we're still in December. Anyway, I'm curious as to who the gift is for, and what it is.

It's a nice style, but I don't think i'd like if it became permanent. I liked the original change in style (in chapters like Back and Forth, and Mischief Night), and the change to color was okay, the characters all seemed to slightly change visually, but I got more used to it over time. This I'm just not much a fan of. I enjoy it on Ask Roseville High, but as a permanent artstyle for the comic, I just don't think it'd be as pleasing to look at imo

This page kind of bothers me. Paulo's torso is too short or it's too broad or both. Thats really a disappointment, Taeshi hasn't done that in a veery long time. Like, monochromatic crosshatched pages long. :c

That sounds about right since I'm so vocal about how much I have hated every other change to the art style.

Now go fix the scanner real quick so I can tell you how much I hate the art style by virtue of it being a change from anything to anything without the factor of the scanner making things look potentially more wonky than they really are.

a new style, eh? it's nice and all, and I'm sure it will look even nicer with a properly calibrated scanner (her water-colours are nice :) ), I'm just not too keen on the reappearance of black outlines. I was really diggin' the darker matching coloured outlines for the characters. Oh well, I'll be used to it in no time and forget about the previous style :P

...what's in the box? I'm surprised no one has guessed yet (unless that was also in the scanner thread). Hmm... I'm not one for spoilers, but I'm gonna guess that it's:
1) chocolate cake, or
2) some article of jewelry
Also, I really like the style of this comic. I think that it adds a kind of classic, and cheerful feel to it. And I bet that the details will look even better once the scanner problem is solved. (I just felt really repetitive of this thread, but oh well.)
EDIT: wait, randommoron5 already guessed at the box's contents... Gosh I'm slow... And now I can't get the image of Paulo-images in the box...

Taeshi was actually unhappy with the digital artwork she'd been producing lately. And there's not much point in an artist creating art if doing so doesn't give her pleasure.

Though to be fair, I don't actually recall too much wrong with "Pillow Talk". I believe a couple of times I commented on Taeshi's attention to detail, such as the brick wall.

thank you, I couldn't figure out why Lucy seemed more "familiar" than usual ;) it's totally the fur/hair on the sides of her cheeks!

I'm really glad to see Lucy will be making another appearance, it was like a Lucy drought last chapter :P

It looks to be shaping up to be another "Another Shoulder" chapter. Lucy will probably be a mess, Paulo will ask her what's wrong, and then...Yeah. Looks fucking promising. :D

But then again, I saw that Jasmine is in an upcoming page in the Scanner Thread. I hope she doesn't meet Paulo by coincidence and then assume the gift is for her. No, I want to see Lucy and Paulo interact because of the cake.

Paulo clearly still has feelings for Lucy, even though he's dating Jasmine. This sets the stage for Paulo's inner conflict. Ultimately I think he will dump Jasmine, though maybe not this chapter. Or maybe this chapter, because December/January is the period where everyone gets a huge helping of angst cake.

Definitely Paulo will wonder what's up with Lucy, when he sees her. Will Lucy try to put up a brave façade, as she did for Mike? Or will she just be outright miserable, as she's done before? If the latter, that'll bring Paulo's spirits down, and even Jasmine may not be able to cheer him up. Paulo will want to help Lucy, and he'll bear a grudge against Mike for treating her that way.

I doubt she'll say outright what happened with the whole everyone hates you speech Mike gave. I just hope Lucy fails at putting up a brave face so Paulo can figure out what's going on.

At the very least cake is good comfort food. Eat your troubles away Lucy. :D

Good point, Anialator. And it may not even be Lucy who answers the door. For example, Jordan may say she's in her room and doesn't want to see anyone right now. That might mean Paulo is left holding a gift for Jasmine.
