We need this, I should say. Pokémon has infiltrated our culture, and very few people below the age of thirty have never watched, played, read, traded or bought something with its label or logo on it - in fact, most of us have done all of this. Now the fifth generation is upon us, with many new Pokémon to boot - this topic is for discussing the new generation and its games/species/stories, for talking about older games and accomplishments, for proclaiming your love for the franchise, or for being a grumpy old person who only comes to say "The first 150/151 were the best, the rest are awful". Everything is allowed, within the limits of decency and the topic, of course. ^_^

So I would like to begin with saying that I rather like many of the new Pokémon. The Snivy (Smugleaf) family, Hitomoshi through Shanderaa, Zorua/Zoroark, Murando, Monmen and all the way to Doredia, the new Fossil Pokémon, and Ulgamoth; all of these are Pokémon that I enjoy and probably will enjoy greatly. However, I also acknowledge that there has been a certain... decay in the quality and inventiveness of the different species. In my opinion, though, I think the Unova (Isshu) region has so far yielded more promise than the fourth. Thoughts on this? I have not played the games and gotten to know the Pokémon yet, so I cannot know for sure. The fact that Black and White were rated 40/40 might be a testament to them, however.

My best Pokémon experience, though, must be the Mystery Dungeon game series (something I have postulated on several occasions; I suppose you must be getting tired of it soon ^_^). The story was absorbing and I got really attached to the characters - this was especially the case with the first game, although the gameplay was better in the second.

So, yes. Say what you want about Pokémon. ^_^

I palyed the hell out of Pokemon Red. My fave was flarion vaporion and joltion. 8-)
  • #2

I have played at least one every generation of Pokemon games. I have even played re-makes. (Fire Red and Soul Silver) Every single time, minus Soul Silver, I have picked the Water type starter.

I... may opt out of getting Black/White after seeing that.

Your constant mentioning of the game makes me want to replay my Mystery Dungeon Blue Team.

Ah the good old games, Red, Blue, and Yellow were the best. Gold and Silver were quit good but i'm not the bigest fan of the rest. I RAPED at the first two Stadioms. And the Manga was a good read, although i'v only got to read a small amount of it
  • #4

Oh pokemon. I couldn't tell you how many hours i've played/watched/traded this franchise, but i would ballpark at around 5000. I've played through all the originals at least 4 times each. I've played Gold/silver several times through, (and crystal). And then there was Ruby/sapphire/emerald. Oh my. These games captivated me since the day I got them. They are (in my opinion) the bast games of the series. What with all the cool new games mechanics that the brought to the series. (contests, in particular) They also had the best, most imaginative pokemon too. I'm currently plaing through ruby for about the 5th time. 8-D I've also played coliseum, snap, and pearl. I can't say I like the new pokemon very much, but I'm still defiantly going to get it.
  • #5

Ah, what a great thread. Thank you very much, ILB.

I've played through the first three generations quite a bit, and I must agree with Jorje that the third was probably the best. I really like one, but three was just awemazing. Two was just completely strange in my opinion. I haven't played very much of the fourth because I don't really care for the DS and all the roms I've tried had something wrong with them. In any case, Snap remains my favorite game to ever come out of the franchise.

As for the card game, it seemed kinda wonky to me, so I never really played, but I collected the hell out of 'em. I gave my collection to a friend to combine with her's. I was under the impression that we were going to sell them to gullible kids, but they got lost somehow. She better not have sold them. I kinda want 'em back now.

And as for the new generation...

Hee. Yes, that is a conundrum of some proportion. But that reminds me: Emonga and Shikijika.

Love my yellow, but haven't really had a chance to play any other... Want to at some point, maybe when black and white are cheap...
Because I only really played yellow, I love the first gen most(particularly mew, eevee and the eeveelutions), dont really know the other generations (though there are a few I love regardless; the new eeveelutions, absol...)..
  • #8

It's going to take some time to get used to 5th gen, took me awhile to get used to 4th gen.
  • #9

I am a fan of <insert newest generation here> because I enjoy fucking progress. Instead of having overpowered Psychic types because they were only weak to ghost and bug (with one of two ghost moves dealing fixed damage, and the only good bug move being Pin Missile), pokemon that just flat out don't work (Flareon has an attack stat of 130, but all fire moves key off special In gen 1-3), and some goddamn variety.

Any "decay" comes from nostalgia factor. Of course squirtle seemed awesome when you were 10, and now your expectations are so high nothing will ever live up to it. 2nd Gen was my favorite overall, though.

tl;dr: New games are great, old games were fun but needed updates.

Also I play semi-competitively, using Pokemon-Online for alot battles recently (It's like shoddy but niftier!), and also has all the 5th gens loaded up. Fun times.

Oh, that was more a pun than anything else. That said, I enjoy the 3rd generation Pokémon more than those from the second, and the 5th more than the 4th. Nostalgia plays a part, yes, but I like Blaziken more than Charizard and Snivy more than Bulbasaur - it is not the sole reason I do not like all the new Pokémon. Although, I never really liked Lickitung or Electabuzz that much, so it nulls out, I suppose.

Chikorita, since Magby can be obtained early via the Pokewalker.

Oh yes, Snap! I beat that game at least 3 times as a wee little one.

not sure i like them changing the name of the new region for the english versions, individual pokemon i understand but an entire region? and the one thats supposed to be new york? is it so offensive to have an american based region have a Japanese name? bah

i must admit the electric spider does look interesting though so this new generation may have potential
  • #14

i belong to the first 2 generations. i have pokemon yellow with the special pikachu gameboy color, and gold. good times.
  • #15

Yellow, platinum and heartgold, so far i'd say i enjoyed platinum the best for its size and story as well as its good starter selection.

though i wish they would make a pokemon game that plays like the anime, being able to take direct control of the pokemon after sending them out and just beating the crap out of each other in a fast paced explosion filled manner would certainly be and interesting experince

From what I was told, Unova is supposed to be a pun or something (Un = United [states], Ov = of, A= America)

And yes, that electric spider looks cool. As does Ulgamoth. Lots of creative bugs this generation.

Hmm... That Unova theory is rather interesting. It might be an apocryphal retcon made by some observant fans; then again, it might just as well be true.

Oh, and I must say that I was pleasantly surprised by the sheer amount of Fire-types that were introduced. There are so many fun ones, too. ^_^

Yes, that was rather a letdown after two Fire/Fighting starter families before them. ^_^
  • #21

I had heard rumors that they were going to ditch the water/grass/fire starters for psychic/dark/fighting types. I also heard that about fourth gen before it came out. Of course, it's obvious now that this was just wishful thinking.

@ navi - Nah, if Pokèmon were real they would be as important as roosters and pitbulls.
  • #22

Unfortunately, the whole psychic/dark/fighting wouldn't work because psychic doesn't effect dark. It would be TOTALLY BADASS THOUGH!!!!! I think they could've just made psychic not very effective to dark in gen V considering how many game mechanics they changed... (Still incredibly pumped though)

There might be a Pokemon hack like that, it might explain it.

And speaking of fire, I just caught Ho-Oh in Soul Silver an hour ago.

The only typings that would actually work like that, is those that are already paired. Ice/Ground/Steel? Ice does not resist Steel. Electric/Ground/Grass? Electric is ineffective towards grass. So yes, pure speculation. ^_^
  • #25

But Psychic/Dark/Fighting would be the second best. And you could easily get past Dark's resistance. Psychic is generally more powerful than Dark and I'm assuming they'd also add secondary types to keep it exciting. Electric/Ground/Flying could probably be a distant third.

I never really got into the newer generations after Silver for GBC, which is my favorite of the entire series. I also really enjoyed Pokemon TCG.. I hear there's a sequel for it, but it was only made available for Japan, sadly.

I suppose I just got too busy, especially in high school. I got Diamond and Soul Silver, too, but I can't seem to really get back into it. I still like Pokemon, but maybe I'm too lazy now. :P

Growlithe will always be my favorite. Poison or burning are my favorite status inducing effects, especially for the trading card game (but I don't know the new rules). bwaha.

Probably because I'll never be able to get into it, but I quite dislike the crazy amount of people who do "EV training" and all that buzzword-y stuff. It really puts me off online battling to know some people number crunch to make their Pokemon unbeatable. I just bimble around with my Psychic team and beat on the NPCs, and sometimes the odd rookie challenger. Hypno is weaker than I remember him being in HeartGold, but that might just be nostalgia.

'Course, he still helped me kikc the crap out of the Elite Four, so I don't mind. Favourite games were Gold and Silver, with Ruby, Emerald, and Sapphire coming close second.

I don't really like the new Pokemon, though I might just need some time to get used to them. However, the new fighting-type pair are unforgivable. The Thing, recoloured, in matching martial arts Gis? Yeah, okay...running out of ideas fast, I think.

Well, the trouble with "getting past Dark's resistance" is that all of the typings would be highly illogical. Dark is weak to Fighting and Bug - if you give the Psychic type a Fighting subtype, you annul the bonus that the Dark Pokémon would have, and in fact, you would put it at a great disadvantage (its own attacks would only be regularly effective, while the Fighting would be super effective against itself in return). If you give it a Bug type, then you would have to give it that type from the very beginning, and also to give it Bug-type attacks from very early on, something that is just as bad.

Of course, it is possible to give it, say, a Ground subtype and let it use that, but with the already established pattern it would be unfair either way you twist it. It goes like: 1 is weak to 3 but strong against 2, 2 is weak to 1 but strong against 3, and 3 is weak to 2 but strong against 1. By introducing an immunity, you need to add something with more power - and in this case, that only makes it harder.

Yeah. Hypno has always had terrible mediocre stats.

Also: EV training has been in since Red/Blue, they just didn't actually explain it to you; there was just a blurb in the back of the pamphlet saying that for some "mysterious reason" pokemon you leveled up by fighting were stronger than freshly caught ones of the same level/species. And it's not so much making them "unbeatable", but making sure your Gyarados (with it's terrible Special Attack) doesn't have it's precious stat points squandered on it, and instead are put into something useful like Speed (or HP, if you like Bulky water types). Yeah. Some of us actually like strategy beyond "spam that one move and watch NPCs crumble". But seriously it's about 127~ extra stat points (that you'd get randomly distributed anyway from leveling), and not much of a crunch to figure out.

Also the two (Dageki and Nageki) fighting types have completely different stat distributions, movesets, and playstyles. But yeah. Totally weren't any non-imaginative pokemon in Gen 1 or 2.

Totally.

I was reaally hoping the new grass starter would get a secondary type at a later evolutionary stage, grass has so many weaknesses that it doesnt pan out in the long run to use them, if they would have given it drgaon as a secondary type then i would choose it.

also the fire pig? the fire fighting monkey from the last generation and the fire fighting pig from this genertion are and homage to the clasic literary work journey to the west, though damn annoying giving them that tired old combo.

upset that they still do not have a ghost/normal pokemon yet, it would be an interetsing type

and ILB you know how i said many months ago on the old fourums how i would like a ancient bird looking pokemon to be a fighting/flying type and showed a link of the bird i was thinking of? You said if they made that pokemon it would end up a rock/flying type, well they damn well made that pokemon so you sure called that.

Oh, yes. I had forgotten that I said that, but now that you mention it - I did call it, did I not. ^_^

Still. A Fighting/Flying type would be fun - a battle rooster, perhaps.
  • #35

I'm personally a fan of Fighting, Poison, and Bug types. But I have lots of fancy theme teams! They're fun to put together. I'm probably picking Swinomite/Pignition to start. ...Though I'll probably swap out my original for one from the Dream World when I get a chance. Reckless~ 8-D

Also gonna get the grass monkey. Since it evolves into Fonzie.

Uh could have sworn I posted in here before, oh well, I still love grass types, and I do know of their weaknesses, it never really bothered me because of their strengths. God help anyone who throws a rock, water, ground, or fighting type my way for I will destroy them. ( the astute will notice the type in there that doesn't belong, but I often delegate that like another type anyways, and the result is the same)

so glad smugleaf is the grass starter. So cool.
  • #38

@ ILB - I wasn't suggesting trying to give the Psychic type a secondary type that was strong against Dark, just one that could land attacks against it. Most types could manage this without overpowering. Also there is never a shortage of Fighting types to catch, so you wouldn't have to try very hard to find something to defeat your rival.
  • #39

  • ILB
  • secretly a man :smirk:

Oh, I am aware of that. My argument, however, was that you would need to have something that gave it the possibility to deal proper damage - take a gander at the 4th generation, for instance, in which all of them got subtypes that would give advantages against the Pokémon whose type they were weak to. If one Pokémon is given the bonus of an immunity, then the other would need something more than just a regularly effective type to make up for it.

So you could have a Psychic/Flying, but that would not really make any difference at all.
  • #40

Well, in my opinion those advantages, while pretty cool, are completely unnecessary. And besides, Psychic-types already have preposterous Special stats. Pair Psychic with another powerful Special type like Fire and you have a very formidable opponent. You could also just lessen the advantage given to the other types. I'm still thinking about it, but I'll try to come up with an optimal final pairing for all three.
  • #41

I thought of another combe for the starters!! Why don't they use dragon , dragon, and dragon??
