Reading up on it, the smiley face is supposed to represent that you don't have the virus anymore. The effects are still there, you just can't spread it to other Pokemon. So he apparently had it, but it went away. All his Pokemon had it (or at least all the ones I've seen) but it went away.
1. HORSE HOCKEY. Not a single hookup exists that can pull this off.
2. The virus is A GOOD THING. It doubles the EV's that pokemon earns and has no negative effects. Adding a smiley face to indicate they're not contagious anymore would be a stone cold "Fuck You" to people trying to exploit it. IT'S WHY IT'S IN THE DAMN GAME--for you to abuse it.
@Esalaka - I get a lot more replay value out of Emerald, but Crystal represented the peak of the series for me. I was annoyed by Ruby and Sapphire cutting the cool animations out, and the fact that you couldn't go back to other regions.

Ah, not a single hookup. I say, "hookups", not "hookup". (Also, I don't think that horses play hockey. (JK))
I said it seems kinda bad. I have enough knowledge to understand that it is a good thing. It just sounds bad. Spreading a virus sounds bad. It does help, but the word "virus" sounds bad and the action of spreading the "virus" sounds really bad, even though it helps.

1. Generation I games can trade Pokémon to Generation II games and vice versa; however, you can only trade Generation I Pokémon from GSC to RGBY, not Generation II ones (this is with the Time Capsule).
2. Neither Generation I or II are compatible with Generation III or forward. The whole data system was reworked, so there is absolutely no way of transferring older Pokémon to Generation III. This is why they did the remakes, so that a complete set could be obtained.
3. Generation III games can not trade with Generation IV games. However, you can put RSE/FRLG into the GBA slot and transfer Pokémon into DPPt/HGSS.
4. Generation IV games are able to transfer Pokémon to Generation V, but no Pokémon may be sent back (the Poké Transfer Laboratory does not allow that).
Hence, we see that Pokémon from Generation I/II are, invariably, lost - hence why we cannot, for instance, have Espeon that know Zap Cannon in online play (since the TM that taught it stopped being a TM after Generation II). There is no way to work around this, except if you are using cheat games exclusively. See here.

Have you played the other games? Note: This is a matter of curiosity, since I myself have enjoyed all the other main series games I have tried, and particularly those I myself have owned. ^_^

1- it changes colors when moved
2- it's written in a fake pokemon language.
3- every pokemon element is on the back of it.
4- It doesnt look like a pokemon card at first glance.

Here's an example:
I work at McDonalds, and we realeased Pokemon toys 2 Weeks ago.
We recieved 8 different toys, 150 of each toy, so 1200 per store.
There are 6 Mcdonalds in the city where I live, which means 7200 toys.
Now, these toys are supposed to last 1 week per 2 toy groups, so about 1800 per week.
As of today, we gave most of the toys at our store to the other 5 stores.
We had about 600 toys left, and now we have probably 150 to last us the next 2 weeks.
There are probably less than 1000 Pokemon toys left between all the McDonalds in the city I live, and we're ordering more within the week, as are all the other stores.
In conclusion, we have been selling the Pokemon toys at a rough rate of 3100 per week, almost double the rate of almost every other toy in recent history, and depending on the supply left, we may not be able to get any more.
Pretty popular if you ask me.

My favorite region was Johto, and I find myself enjoying the games less and less as more are released. That's probably only due to the fact that I've played so many and the basic gameplay is always nearly identical. G5 actually contained a lot of pretty decent pokemon, contrary to popular belief. I think the problem people have with it is actually about complicated, convoluted designs that seem like they're just grasping for ideas. They're stupidly assigning it the word "unoriginal" without actually stopping to think about what that means. One of my closest friends has given up on the series, and even nintendo in it's entirety, (excluding LoZ) because he's, "Grown out of it", and I kind of wish I could drag him back into it.
Also, the TV show hasn't been any good since Johto. Period. I worry for my little sister, who is still a fan of the show, but I think she'll be okay because she seems to favor the Kanto/Johto reruns to the G5 series currently being aired.

Like I said, a lot of the new designs are written off as a lack of originality, but think about it: Grimer and Muk are blobs of sludge come to life, as Trubbish and Garbodor are bags of trash come to life. Chandelure is based on a chandelier, yes, but also a Hitodama or Will-O-Wisp, and the Japanese belief that objects over 100 years old develop souls. Whimsicott is based on cotton plants, but has sheep like features because back when cotton was first imported nobody could believe a wool-like substance could come from plants and imagined cotton was a half plant half sheep hybrid. Sigilyph is living Nazca lines, the Solosis evolutionary line is based on cellular division and reproduction as well as the idea of homunculus, Elgyem and Beheeyem are aliens disguising themselves as humans, Karrablast and Shelmet evolve through a codependent relationship I COULD DO THIS ALL DAY.

YOU GOT TO BE A GIRL. WITH BLUE HAIR. Instead of the cap wonderful boy.
Which meant my brother couldnt always name the character after himself
(He would play the first two gyms, get bored and I would finish it off. Did this for every game until Crystal, when he saw you could be a girl so he named the character after me, which I always thought was sweet of him
I always chose Totodile, his name forever cemented as Sprax.
I booted up my version awhile ago, really good sense of nostalgia, it's a wonderful thing, I seem to care more for my pokemon than I did when I was younger. Really odd...
And I agree, the cartoon stopped being good after Misty left (a.k.a hoenn series) I mean the hoenn series was alright, just lacking. I hated hated hated the ones after that though.

The big thing that sold me on Crystal was the story, which was an improvement over Gold & Silver's, and honestly the best in the series (can't comment on BW, because I haven't played them). Rather than going the Yellow-Route and shoehorning new games into the plot, they actually altered the entire plot so they'd fit. This was the first game to feature a legendary as one of its main-story elements as well. Though the story still wasn't going to win any awards, it was fairly satisfying. The fact is, while Gold and Silver set the foundation for the rest of the series, all of the sequels pretty much were built around the model Crystal laid out--the legendary pokemon were now more than super-strong creatures that occupied side-quests, the animations (briefly abandoned in Ruby and Sapphire) were a nice break from the static battle images, the inclusion of 2 rivals (Eugene I think and the red headed crook) instead of one made it more interesting, and the move tutor has appeared in some form in all of the subsequent games.

Gen 5 actually had some very interesting pokemon, true, but I sort of miss the simplicity of the first few generations. Also, it's just a little bit off-putting sending a trash bag out to fight against the other pokemon.

Yeah, after Misty left it went downhill. I believe one of the writers or artists actually said something along of the lines of "guys need some new eye-candy from time to time". Thus, we got May (who is so much worse than her manga counterpart). The show got almost unbearable after they changed the voice actors, too. Ugh, Ash's new voice is terrible.

To each their own. I particularly like the "deeper" pokemon, and the more complex themes. I mean, the simpler stuff was interesting enough when I was a kid, but this can hold my attention as an adult.

I was never into stat specialization though, and my older sister always wiped the floor with me when we battled on our Game boy colors[Oh god, I miss those days, I think we have my older sisters lime green game boy color around somewhere, and I know her copy of pokemon yellow is in her room at my grandma's], but I always enjoyed playing, and I think I was the only one out of me and my two sisters who ever managed to legitimately level a pokemon to lvl 100, but my sisters working together upstaged that by getting all 150 pokemon registered on their pokedexes, I think we even have a bunch of the first season episodes for VCR as well, "Hey you, Pikachu" for the N64 as well as Pokemon Stadium.
Although I don't play the games too much anymore though, but that doesn't mean I don't recognize it as a part of my childhood, and a damn good part to boot.
