The Big Night

It cost him almost everything he had made for the past month. But he knew it was all worth it. It was the big night. Prom. The night that everyone talks about. The highlight of senior year. The big shebang before everyone leaves. Before everyone separates.

He didn't know how to tie the tie properly. The internet was helpful enough, though. On his third try, he finally got it the right length. Paulo stood in the bathroom, looking at himself in the tall mirror. Look at you, he thought. Wearing a suit. Sharp. That was a word he'd use. Sharp as hell.

"So this is it, huh?" came a deep voice from the doorway.

"You know it, Dad."

His father walked up next to him, and stood next to him, also facing the mirror. Paulo was taller than his dad now, although not by much. He was, however, currently much better dressed.

"I'm kinda surprised," his father said.

"Why's that?" asked Paulo.

"You almost look respectable," laughed Paulo's dad. There was an almost sad look in his eyes, though, that became more apparent as his father crossed his arms, and his expression turned to one of pride. "You've really planned this all out, huh?"

Paulo took the comb he had on the edge of the sink, and started running it through his hair. "Yeah. She's going to love it.... I hope."

His father's arm wrapped up and around his shoulder. "She will." A smile arose from Paulo's face.

A moment later, his father, giving a reassuring fatherly pat on the back, turned to leave the bathroom. "The keys are in the kitchen. I'll be at Steve's place watching the game. You won't see me until tomorrow, big guy." His father's footsteps sounded from the wood stairs.

"Thanks, Dad! I won't scratch her, don't worry!" He put the comb back down on the edge of the sink. He was glad he learned to drive, although his friends used him as a taxi. Paulo let a huge grin cross his face.

Sharp as hell. She would love tonight.

Paulo slid into the driver's side seat of his father's beat-up Toyota. It wasn't the prettiest car, but it definitely got the job done. He placed the box he had been carrying on the passenger seat, and with a turn of the key, started the car up. It's no racecar, but it'll get them there. Mirrors good, seat... good, now. Alright. Time to pick her up.

5:58 flashed the car stereo. Paulo turned off the engine, and opened the box that was sitting beside him. Inside, a bouquet of pink and orange roses, and a red corset to match his red tie. Perfect. He grabbed them both, and used his leg to close the car door. A deep breath to calm the heart a bit, and Paulo marched down the walkway to the front door. He hit the doorbell, and anxiously waited.

A quick glance over at the driveway. No red sports car, but a yellow Camero. That could only mean-

"So. You aren't late."

Sam.

"Don't be disappointed," replied Paulo, his attention turning to the white cat standing in the door, barely taller than him. "But these aren't for you. I didn't know what colors would match both your eyes." A big grin crossed his face. The only way to deal with Sam was to not let him intimidate you.

"Hmph." Sam replied, stepping aside. "She'll be down in a few minutes. Just remember, Paul, if-"

"Paulo."

"...Paulo. If you hurt my sister-"

"Sam." Paulo put his hand up on Sam's shoulder, not letting himself be fazed. "I haven't for all these years we've been together. Why would I?"

Sam narrowed his eyes and got brought his face close, eye-to-eye with Paulo, a determined scowl across his face. Paulo continued to maintain his grin.

"Sam, stop trying to make out with my boyfriend." A voice from the top of the stairs called down. Lucy. Finally.

Sam broke the glare, glancing up the stairs. Paulo's eyes followed suit. Up at the top of the stairs stood Lucy, dressed in a beautiful sunflower dress. Paulo's expression became one of stunned reverence.

She was beautiful.

Lucy's Mom was orbiting her, touching up her hair. "Mom," Lucy said, crossing her arms, "it's fine."

"Are you sure? I mean, you don't think your hair would look better if-"

"Mom."

Lucy began to set down the stairs. "It's fine."

Paulo pushed Sam back a bit with his arm. "Excuse me, big guy, but I have to be a gentleman." Sam relented, and backed up to the door. Paulo held the flowers in his left hand, and outstretched his right towards Lucy's descent. She took it when she got close enough. "You idiot," Lucy said, blushing.

Paulo extended the flowers with his other hand. "For you." Lucy took the flowers, her cheeks turning redder. She looked away, embarassed.

"Oh, right! The corset!" Paulo reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out the red corset, slipping it on Lucy's left arm. "Not half as beautiful as you're lookin'."

Lucy continued to be completely embarassed. "Stop it."

Sam cracked his knuckles as Lucy's Mom began to walk down the stairs. "Oh stuff it, Sam," went Lucy, shifting from dere to tsun. "Let me have this." Sam rolled his eyes, and went back to being the overprotective older brother.

Her Mom had navigated her way down the stairs, and was once again messing with Lucy's hair. "Are you sure you're ready to go?" Lucy's Mom began to fret. "I can put your hair up-"

"MOM."

"Okay, dear."

Her Mom relented, and leaned down from a higher stair to whisper in Lucy's good ear. "If you need to be picked up, just call." Lucy handed the bouquet of flowers back up to her mother. "I won't need to, Mom." She turned back to Paulo, and started to pull him, as she walked past and out the door. "Come on, we'll be late."

Paulo gave a grin and a wave back to Sam as Lucy pulled him out the door. Lucy's Mom let out a sigh from the door as she watched them head down the path to Paulo's car. "I remember your prom, Sam..."

:nope: "I won't be home until tomorrow." *winkwink*

Camero. Camaro. Cuhmareo. And here I figured Sam to be into Euros.

Looking forward to -3-, curious who drives the red car, my bet is on Augustus. Cause who doesn't like crack pairings?
