Last of his kind! ;_____;

this is now a mothafreaken turtle appreciation chat

because turtles/tortoises are the best and they were my favourite animal prior to adoring cats. I used to own them when I was a child and they are hardcore AND WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT OUR MANY POTENTIAL TURTLE EXPERIENCES

which turtle has touched your heart

let's do it for lonesome george
  • #1

a species rather than the man destroys
  • #2

Turtles are awesome.
  • #3

Oh god he's dead? I remember seeing him last year, when he was 99. He was the last of his kindddd
  • #4

Really, the only experience I have with tortoises was one that wandered into my neighborhood during a drought a few years back...

Kind of off-putting...

Sometimes species just go extinct because the planet is too hostile for them to survive.

Like Jews.

Like it or not, this is absolutely true.

We've been around for thousands of years. We've survived millenia of persecution. We'll never truly die, Jerk.

i think the saddest part of the story is that they tried to get him to mate with other turtles (not of his species exactly, but similar) to try and pass on the genetics, and after 15 years he finally does and the eggs failed to be fertilized :(

R.I.P last of his species. Some people say “hey a turtle died, big deal”. But what we witnessed was the extinction of a specie. Maybe we didn’t saw the Do-do bird, but at least we can tell our grandchild…or the kids that hang around our lawn “I was alive when the last of the giant turtles was alive”. They may call us cranky and old bags, but we can be proud to yell at them to get the hell out of our lawn because we witnessed something little, yet epic.

TurtlexLonesome George pic here, quick sketch. Nothing else.

Oh yeah, turtle belongs to Veronica “Taeshi” Vera Taeshi Diary

Sea Shepherds News - Galapagos National Park Mourns the Loss of Lonesome George, an Icon of Conservation Efforts Worldwide

This why we need to protect species at the bring of extinction...

May Lonesome George rest in piece.

My Turtle Experience:

When i was younger i went to the beach, i saw baby turtles flat like panckes by cars... but i saw one baby turtle crawling , and i pick and put it in the ocean.

heh, bit cliche, but true.

Raxki, for just once, I'd like to see you shut the fuck up about the Sea Shepard and how much you want Paul Watson's cock inside you.

But yeah. Turtles.

Your family was Foot Fetish Clan and was killed by furries.

Happily, giant tortoises remain - the Galápagos tortoise species is still alive, and this kind (the Pinta Island subspecies) is the only one out of thirteen subspecies to be extinct. Unfortunately, apart from the Galápagos tortoises, there are only three extant species remaining of the giant tortoise family, and even then two of them are extinct in the wild and only exist in captivity.

The family is quite peculiar and most certainly proud, and I would love to encounter a member thereof, as it were, face to face. For now, though, it is important that we try to conserve the remaining four species. Hopefully, though, Lonesome George will not become the panda. ^_^

But what about terrapins?

Also, I've met one of these guys. Super fun.

Genetic bottle-neck and captivity will leave these guys at a disadvantage in the wild. Maybe it's better help to protect the species of giant tortoises that have yet to reach that tipping point?
  • #24

Never heard of him until this thread. I was never much into turtles, like most people I always had a soft spot for those baby sea turtles crawling from under the sand trying to make their way to the ocean before being eaten. I really like tortoises, too, not sure what I found so appealing about them, maybe I'm just fascinated with how slow they can be with those thick legs and how old they can get.

To be fair, there's some evidence to suggest that there are half-breeds of his species on another island, and there may well be some other full blooded individuals out there in the wild still.

This is probably the only turtle i'd consider to be kind of cool, other than that i don't see whats so special about them.
  • #30

Some people like animals that make them look fast in comparison.

It does, to a degree, look like the Koopa Troopas that you meet at the lower castle levels of Mario games.

However, I need to question the notion that there is nothing special about the chelonian race. They are quite immensely special. ^_^

I used to have a pet Box turtle had to let her go awhile back.
Hope she's alright out there.
