Cavara needs tuition

Hello there! I've begun drawing fanart, and I found it pretty amusing, but I'd love to improve.
So i'm collecting in this thread the pictures I posted in the imageboard, and will add more if I make them. I would really appreciate it if - after you've told me how much I suck in whatever form and colorfull language you like best - you'd also give me some advice.
Thankyou in advance.

I like your style... it is not that bad. its kind of cute :smirk:
But in the last image, lucy's boobs are... kind of weird i think  ... i don't know how to describe it better...
  • #2

Thanks Thallios you're too kind. I need some crude critic to work on, but I'll take note.
"Pay more attention to boobs"
uhmm...
  • #3

If you improve your anatomy and shading, I think you'll be much better.
Not bad.
  • #4

Thanks, now the advice I was hoping for is how to do that? Are there rules to follow for anatomy? Are there guides? Should I take example in human models? Make sketches of different positions and then use those as models every time I draw? I have no basis so I have no idea.
  • #5

From what i have read in other posts you could use something like this: Wodden Mannequin for positions.
If you are drawing anthropomorhic characters you can take humans as examples (as the characteras are almost human) i think...
  • #6

Start with some basic shapes. You'll improve faster if you start trying that early on.
Go here, and you might want to see all the other tutorials.
This person too.

Also, you don't have to draw everything in shapes. It can get overwhelming and boring. You can like, just start drawing sticks and circles first for characters. Then after a dozen drawings or more when you get more confident you can start shaping muscles and stuff. Take it one step at a time.

Thanks for the advice, i started from that

your problem is that everything you have is mikexlucy
  • #9

In other words, Spacemouse is requesting PxL.

I like the cowgirl get-up.
  • #10

The Lead roles shows a lot of improvement already. Work more on faces now, that could use improvement. Also your hands are really small; put your hand against your face to get an idea of their size. ;)
  • #11

Thanks for the advice everybody!
About the LucyxMike subject, yeah I started from them and I plan to try more characters, but the point is that I would like to make them recognizable... when I finish and look at them I cannot help but think "meh, it's just not him/her" so I thought I'd stick to practicing on the same characters to try and get them right.
  • #12

Keep practicing Cava. This looks pretty good! Mike's head looks tiny compared to Lucy's. The feet creep me out a little. Faces are a bit too circular for my liking. Though don't take too much of my word, I'm not that good either.

  • #13

Thanks fo the advice Tiggy! I'll study the problem. (maybe you meant Lucy's head looks too small? they should be about the same size, and I think I made Mike's a little too big.. he's probably swelling from the anger)

Here's another one

  • #15

Hehe, cute. XD you're really getting the hang of this. The background is a bit garish, though; your foreground should be dominant, but with those colors they kind of recede. Try less saturation next time, neh? :3 also, mouths have tongues and teeth. It wouldn't be the empty hole that is Mike's mouth. :P

Overall, you're getting it.

Thanks for the advice RC, i'll keep it in mind!
  • #18

Here's a group one. Maybe not improving from the last, but I think I learned a thing or two making this.

P.S.: Sorry Daisy, I totally owe you.

Sweet, you had my favourite BCB character be my favourtite One Piece character. (Paulo/Sanji.)
  • #20

Here's a new pic of Lucy.
I could seriously use more advice.

  • #21

Lucy again.. ok I'll try to focus on something else...

  • #22

For God's sake someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong. Because.
This is not Daisy.

  • #23

I really like this picture!
Spoiler

hmm some advice?? I guess in general, your poses look a little stiff? I'm not sure, sorry, I'm not the best at giving advice!!
but for the Daisey picture, her left arm and her left hand looks a bit weird, and maybe her muzzle/snout thing?? UH?? fuck
SORRY
I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT I'M DOING
WHATEVER ALKGHEF ignore me sobs in corner
  • #24

Thanks a lot, there's no way I'm ignoring you! I do appreciate a lot every attempt to help me, and I need it! I'll think about whatever you pointed out, please don't be afraid to comment more if you can notice anything else.
I'm particularly frustrated with Daisy, because as opposed to every panel and every doodle Taeshi ever did about her, I don't think she's adorable in my pic.
  • #25

Your art is pretty adorable, you're definitely gaining improvement!
With the Daisy picture, I think she doesn't look so much like Daisy because her face is a little long? She has a cute not-exactly-chubby-but-baby-ish face that's a little shorter? Her boobs are a little low, and I think Tae characterized her as not so much skinny. Ahhhh I don't even think I'm explaining this right, but okay, like, two more things. The hand looks good! The problems are it's still small, and it should be tilted inward a tad more, because it looks like her wrist is bending very uncomfortably. Finally, I think this is your style so idksalkds ignore this one probably, try rounding her eyes a bit, or giving them some depth or feeling.
Ahhh.
Stuff.
It is a pretty cute picture though c: I also like the Lucy one a lot~
  • #26

Thanks a lot Oso-De-Clare, your advice is great. I feel like Watson when Sherlock points out all the evidence that he couldn't see when it was right in front of him! D:
I'll definitely keep it in mind and work on that.

P.S.: it's embarassing to say but with the eyes I am pretty clueless.. as for now I'm almost randomly doodling them until something loosely decent pops out by itself, I have no idea whatsoever on how to give them depth or feeling
  • #27

I think I need to refine the pencil sketches a lot more before acquiring them into the pc and start the digital work.
This one was already almost completed, so my usual mistakes are all there again. I hope at least SpaceMouse will appreciate the subject:

I have bagun uploading the full size pics in PIXIV, and putting them as Source Image. I' not sure if they can be accessed without a pixiv account though.

Ahh, I'm glad it helps! Nahh, it's always difficult to get a different perspective on your own art, I have the same issue. I suggest searching eye tutorials on deviantART.com and try to grasp a style. You can look around at some of your favorite artists or just something you've favorited on candybooru and study their eyes, try to pull a little of that into a style you create.

I really like the pose and the colors on this (and the couple hnn otp #^_^#), but it's just the eyes on this that kind of throws it off, and for that just do what I said up theree ^^ but anyways a pretty good pic overall, nice background~
  • #29

Ok I made a new fanart, but... I .. kinda got carried away and it ended up NSFW.
I probably won't be able to put it in the boruu, but I uploaded it into Pixiv... in a couple of hours it got more views than all the other pics altogether.. the power of the "R18" flag I guess... that's kind of sad :/
I'm sorry but you almost certainly need a pixiv account to see it. In the almost certain event that it is judged inappropriate for the boruu I'll see if there's some other way to make it available, so that I can ask tuition on that as well.
Stay tuned. :-*

UPDATE:
Ok, I posted it and it is available now.
It's a SandyxDaisy questionable situation, and
Beware: it is NSFW!

Is that site just full of loli style stuff or am I imagining things? Why not host it on a deviantart page? Or mayhaps a free image host site?

It's for weeaboos

Not solely for weeaboos, given that it's a Japanese-owned site.

your eyes are better. Daisy's head looks flat, somehow, but I can't really figure it out.

Put your NSFW pictures in the secret BCB image board instead.
  • #34

I have been biased against deviantart in the past since the first things I looked up there were all marvel/dc/superhuman style and I prefer a style that indulges into some cuteness. Anyway, since I had this old account on Pixiv (it's a nice source for unknown fanart if you take the time to translate the tags into japanese) I thought it could have been useful to post my pics there, as a small advertisement to bcb in a different place. I have no idea if anyone reads the comments to the pictures, where I put the link to bcb, but I figured it was worth trying.

About free image host sites, I was just about checking their faqs (many specifically prohibit furry content) when a little bird suggested me e621 and it looks like it's just THE right place. It just requires a week for an account to be able to upload, so.. see you later, I guess.

P.S.: thanks for the advice and sorry for bothering for the approval.

Ok I must change something, because drawing has been taking increasing amounts of time and this last one took me an eternity to complete. Plus, there's still some of my usual mistakes. ._.
I am so jealous of those who can create awesome art in a matter of minutes.. I guess that's the big difference between an artist and a wannabe...
Anyway here it is:

  • #36

I went for a quick doodle this time.
It's a parody from an old love of mine, back in teenage years when the show was going for the first time.

EDIT: It didn't occur to me that it is basically like a fancharacter and it shouldn't be posted in the boruu. My apologies. I changed the links in this post to pixiv.
I am currently whipping my back in repentance.

Quick and dirty.
Lucy again

  • #38

Boop boop so cute. 8-D

I love the coloring/shading you did for the picture of the guys playing pool.
  • #39

Thanks Tiggy!

And, here's a new pic. It's a lot smaller that the original, but I think Suitcase would have killed me if I posted the original. :P

YES

JUST YES

I created an account in DeviantArt as well, but I'm not sure if it makes sense to post pictures there as well. Any advice is welcome about how to use it.

Another fanart.
And guess what? It's Lucy again!

Wow! Mike better run! What are the orange things? Are those other people in the background, or some monster thing of Lucy's?

Those are more people if I got it right from "End of Evangelion"!
... but come on, is there anyone that understood anything at all in "EoE"? XD

(basically it's just a joke about BCB's finale... Evangelion's final episode was something that left you like.. "dafuq did I just watch?")
