Naoki's Art Thread

HEY, EVERYBODY! I'm back in the forum! ("Who is this kid??")

So I would like to start posting art and such, so I thought it might be cool to do here cuz this forum is really the only one I know of that is actually active anymore. So I can get critiques and all that. ("And that, you will.")

I just got some new pencils and am really excited to share my new stuff! Yay.

I don't want you to be gentle and I certainly don't expect you all to be. ("Sho'll ain't gon be either.") Thank you in advance! :)

Over the Shoulder
Posted Image

So here's my first work posted! It took so long between the first post cuz posting images here is difficult, I found out. AND WHY WON'T IT SHOW THE IMAGE ROTATED. WHYYYY.

Also, I tried to make an effect with my desk lamp light to coincide with the shading... to compensate for the crappy phone camera quality.

Anyway... any critique? c:

I am not discouraged... just yet.

Aww, shame you don't have a scanner. :c They're not that expensive, and they're definitely worth it! Your pencil drawing came out really well, from what I can tell. But because the quality is so low, I can't tell much OTL She has a nice face and the shadows are good.

And don't get discouraged, the Creative Arts thread doesn't get too many comments, but chances are people lurk and check you out. ;) Just keep bringing in the art!
  • #4

Oh, I have one, just not here.

And thank you. I saw that the thread was being viewed, so that made me feel better about no comments.

I have a close-up of her face - should I post that, too?
  • #5

Ah, it's actually pretty nice! I wish you had a scanner; the picture quality is leaps and bounds over the camera. But I like what I see thus far. A close up would be ballin', yo. c:

Her head is ginormous, it's really nicely-shaded though. I think that's my favourite part of it, but it seems like you just kind of gave up when you got to the body? Try to research body proportions, like the shoulder looks really small compared to the head, and raised up unnaturally.

Undone WIP

Yeah, I have a problem with making heads too big and focusing too much on the face. That's usually cuz I draw the head, not planning on even giving it a body till I'm done and feel that it deserves one. I end up making the rest too small, though.

I know how to proportion, but don't really practice it like I should. Like, I gotta plan it out along with the head first. :L
Here's an example of a WIP I started a few weeks ago, but never got back to:
Spoiler

Does that seem like an appropriately sized head to you? I feel it might still be a bit big.

The arm is so small cuz I kinda used myself as a reference and I have the skinniest arms ever. I see now that I prolly shouldn't do that.

I'll be sure to upload the close up of the first work later today!
Edit: I edited it into the post under a spoiler.

Shirtless

Here's another one of my latest drawings. I better laid out the proportions, but I think the head is still a bit too big. :L
Note: I used mechanical pencil initially. So you can see the mistakes through the horrid shading.

Critique?

Time for some updates on art!
I've been doing some editing for a couple of my pieces, so I wanted to post a "before and after" post. Maybe tell me what you guys think about my editing?

Also, got to my scanner finally! :D But, oop, I forgot about redoing the ones I already have up, so those will be up... later.
Also, also, I've stopped worrying about the big head thing because I realized that it's really not that big a deal due to it simply being my style- which I would say is cartoony, based on my influences. It's not like I'm doing like portraiture or anything, so no more questioning myself of the proportions, which will do me some good.

Before and After

These are a couple of simple sketches I ended up editing for fun.

So this first one's a self-cartoon...
I originally drew it with an ebony pencil, I think, but couldn't get it to be as dark as I wanted when shading the skin and darkening the hair and shoes- though the hair and shoes could be due to fading over time. But add a lil Dodge and Burn and BAM- it's perfect! Though, that hoodie could a bit more work...

Spoiler

The same stuff can be said for the next piece, except I used sketching pencils (HB, 2B, 4B & 6B), but I still couldn't get my desired darkness and contrast when "shading" originally.
This girl is a character I named Natalie (Nat), who was originally created as a fan character for BCB some years ago (German Shepherd).
I really liked the character, so I redid her as a person and am planning on putting her into a comic I'd like to do. She also has a twin brother, Nathaniel (Nate), who has the matching other half of to her Yin/Yang necklace.

Spoiler

Any comments on my editing..?

More Edits
So these, I either accidentally saved over or deleted the original from my USB.

I enjoy drawing interactions of siblings. Here's a lil sketch I did for fun, then liked so much, I edited it.
Bro & Sis Edit:

This was a bit of practice I decided to do with body orientation a while back. This is very relevant to the comic, too. LOOK THERE'S A KITTY.

COMMENTS?? I NEED CRITIQUE, PLS.

Ok I'll try, but I'm a newbie, so take my critique with a grain of salt. Or two.

I'm not an expert about editing, but from the looks of it I'd say you basically increased the contrast, which worked fine... You clearly did more than that or the necklace would appear darker, but that is the overall impression.

In Nat's picture I think the naked shoulder is a little odd, maybe exaggerated. Generally speaking broad shoulders are more of a masculine feature, but the overall look of it is not displeasing, and you might work on it (exaggerating some features a little into more prominent curves) to make it part of your style if you don't mind leaning a bit away from realistic proportions and toward the caricature.

Both in Nat and Bro & Sis the mouths are a bit too simplified. You can do very well when the perspective is almost frontal, but you'll have to work out something different for the 3/4 perspective because the two styles (simple and caricatural in Nat and Bro & sis, complex and realistic in Girl Cat & Bed) wouldn't eventually fit together in the same picture.

If you think proportions are part of your style then it's allright, but while I don't think the heads are that much too big, the hands and feet do look too small to me. If you mean to achieve a cartoony look I think both head and hands/feet should be a little oversized, but even if you want to draw them in a realistic style, they should be larger than they are now.
Of course if you draw a comic instead of a single picture, o lot of things will be overlooked and you don't need to be that perfect, but even so there are things that are pretty visible. The point is that from the way you draw the faces, especially regarding the size of the eyes, it would seem that you are researching a realistic style, but that sets a context where any semplification you indulge yourself with stands out more.

Ok I hope I didn't just say a bunch of nonsense, but that's my 5 cents. I won't praise since you asked for critique, not flattery! ;)

Yeah, I pretty much just really wanted to show more contrast since it's not colored. That was my main focus, besides cleaning it up a bit.
Shoot forgot about the necklace while editing!! Gonna go back and do that...

It's supposed to be lifted a bit is prolly why it looks weird?- it's not relaxed. I usually use myself for those kind of references so I guess I have broad shoulders?

Girl, Cat & Bed is supposed to be more realistic, while Nat and the sibs are to be more cartoonish. Thank you for noticing the difference in those lil giveaways. But they are all separate ideas with no relation to each other, which is why they differ in some instances. Overall, though, there will almost always be some cartoony aspect to my work.

No, you're cool and your critique was helpful. Thank you.

A Change of Pace (Classroom Stuff)

So here's a self portrait of myself... on Halloween...as a mime. That background was coincidence- I'd made it the week before with no thought of the upcoming "holiday". I had no idea we'd be assigned a self portrait on Halloween and that we'd have only have black and white oil pastels to use- WHAT A COINCIDENTAL DAY FOR ME.

Spoiler

Also, sorry for terrifying you and giving you nightmares about my mime face.

Here's a scratchboard assignment I had. It was for an exquisite corpse collaboration. We all had either head, body or legs/feet/bottom and, when we were done, the teacher put them together based on whose parts went well together. This was my piece. I'm really, very proud of it!

Spoiler

I had actually had legs originally, but traded with a classmate cuz I'm ace at faces/heads and such. Because of my idea, I had to study how the brain looked, so because of this assignment, I can draw brains without reference pretty well!
