In my country 99% of tv shows are dubbed, and they are usually done very well, professionally, and sometimes with real movie actors lending their voices to their foreign counterparts. Those times I watched stuff in original language it was either american movies/series or japanese anime with english subtitles, therefore I seldom watched anything dubbed in english.
Recently I was looking for a scene from an old anime and could only find dubbed it in english, but the piece I watched was really embarassing, with totally anonymous and flat voices and very little intensity... Sounded like cheap porn to be blunt.
So I was wondering if the average dubbing is just average, or if I have just been unlucky with the things I have seen.

It depends what you've seen. For your old anime, Japan allows more perverted things in their anime than in North America. Sometimes for english versions they remove somethings and replace them with a new scene, thats more toned down from what it was originally.

Yeah, One Peace was butchered to hell when 4kids had them. Of course one of the worst dubs for any anime I've ever heard has got to be the American Dub for Eyeshield 21. I can't believe how much they butchered that anime just so they could put it on NFL's kid site.

You can't blame them for most of the stuff they did to the anime. The censorship was necessary or else all the parents would get pissed. They knew from the beginning that One Piece was just to get the contract for Pokemon. Their job was to make money, which is fine.

People have argued that the 4kids dub of One Piece has ruined a good first impression of it, which I would agree, but I would also say it was good for spreading awareness of how bad 4kids is, and how subs are superior to dubs.

The market for good voice actors is really small for anime because it's pretty niche. So dubs will never get the same consistent quality as raw voice acting does. Even Cowboy Bebop has to struggle with passing without any bad voice actors.

Yeah. It took years until I thought about watching one piece because it seemed lame.

It's worth noting that most voice-actors over in Japan are hailed as gods, whereas over here they're people who can't find work as proper actors; hence, the quality isn't likely to be as good as it is over there. There are some exceptions where the studios are well-funded - step forward Miyazaki- but mostly, they're sub-par.

Most often, the voice actors are annoying. Other times, the dialogue sounds really unnatural. And then 4kids fucks it all to hell.
But sometimes the show sucks anyway.

I'm looking at you, Mr. "CARD GAMES ON MOTORCYCLES"
