haha, what? how is typing the Pokemon a flaw in the game design? if anything, it's the typing of pokemon that gives Pokemon a one-up in the strategy department when it comes to most turn-based RPGs. the typing of pokemon determines weaknesses, strengths, and move effectiveness, which requires a different approach when it comes to fighting when compared to other RPGs. if you'd rather your strategy be "equip all the mega items", that's fine and dandy, but in all honesty, also very boring.

and i'm confused with the whole mixing of species and elemental types comment. what exactly do you mean there? that all pokemon of the same type are somehow a shared species or something? because that's complete bollocks.

as for "bland" normal types, i'm not gonna argue with that one, because they're.... normal. that's exactly what they are. flying types, however, not bland. up until Black and White, there were no pure flying type pokemon. flying would be only a secondary type, meaning that the pokemon would have a primary type (normal, water, steel, etc.) and then flying as a secondary type. there aren't even any pokemon that have flying for their primary type, unless you're willing to count Pokéstar Studios opponents - Bulbapedia, the community-driven Pokémon encyclopedia from Pokestar Studios, which obviously no one does because that'd be incredibly stupid. As for ground types, you're talking about a group of pokemon that includes Swampert and Quagsire, the biggest middle finger to electric type moves ever.

er, that's practically the entire battle system.

also, new info on Ninfia, it's English name will be Sylveon. still betting on flying type

Sylveon makes me think of silver, which makes me think of steel

even though it's kawaii and pink
  • #104

I think that might be possible, but the only reason it's thought of in a way different from that is because of the color scheme.
  • #105

i just think Sylveon might just be derivative of "Sylph" which in many European mythos is an air elemental spriti type thing.

I keep thinking that would be kinda cool, but the problem is every other eevee evolution name has been so plain and obvious? That's sort of why I'm thinking so simple and assuming sylveon = silver = steel, sylph associating with flight just seems way too clever for people who name their pokemon caterpie and meowth and purugly
  • #107

but these are also the same people who came up with Marill (based on "maris" that means "marine"), Latios and Latias (the latin word "lateo" means "hidden") and Vespiqueen's name refers to the word "vespine" which literally means "relating to wasps". not to mention how the legendary trios for practically each game are just number puns.

All steel type Pokemon are silver or gray so I doubt that it's a steel type.

What about syther's evolution? It's a steel/bug type pokemon thats coloured red. By that logic, you could argue that it was a bug/fire type.

Kaxbe: I'm mainly talking about the eevee evolution names themselves, they are all really obvious. It's almost like making a fourth legendary bird and using a completely different pun on its number rather than using "cuatro" to follow on the pattern of "uno, dos, tres"

I guess I shouldn't have mentioned other simple pokemon names, since I was mainly referring to the pattern of the eevee names.

Scizor is a bug type first and a steel type second but I'm rely surprised it's not a grass type.

Taeshi: but yet the dark type isn't given an obvious name. Umbreon. unless you already know that the umbra is the darkest part of a shadow, you're shit outta luck there. Umbreon is pretty much the exception to the "obvious name" rule for eeveelutions. it wouldn't be too weird of them to do it again with Sylveon.

Reply toward Kaxbe.

It's a flaw because many of the monsters can be percieved to have more than two types. The non-Dragon Dragons are the most obvious example.

Dragon, Ghost, and Bug are the only three types directly related to what type of monster the, monster, is.
Flying- spoilered
Spoiler

Flying, Ground and Normal, bland. As they aren't very specific in what they are. What is Normal? It's the akin to "not special in any way", but for them to be paired with Flying whenever they are a bird without any other specialties, Skarmory Murkrow ArticZapMol etc., further pushes my beleif that it is intended as a Species type rather than a Elemental. With Normal being the Element placeholder for them.

Ground are just dirt/sand element types. It's a bland type because what is Ground when you don't really have that dirt/sand elemtalness to you? You're either Rock or Normal. This could have been better expressed as an "Earth" type and included the Rock group. Rock and Ground share many weaknesses and many resistances in the real world, but in the game, not so much. My suspension of disbeleif is showing.

~~
Furthermore on the Sylpheon thing, I can't really see it being a normal type eevee evolution. You would need some new gimmick to make it NOT evolve into an Umbreon/Espeon.

still not really seeing how this is a flaw since there really isn't a need for a "creature type" in Pokemon. it honestly sounds like you're griping about Pokemon not being like other video games. the battle system they have works and works well.

Personally I prefer Gen I, I think simpy because I'm most used to it. Also, Mistys appearance wasn't changed back then and I don't really like her second one. But my favourite sprites (of all and the GenI pokemon specifically) are from Generation III. Still 2d but with all colors you could possibly want. The animation when you encounter one is nice for kids, but it doesn't adds anything to the game experience at all. Battle animations are always solid, but were never in combination with the attacking pokemon, which is a bit sad. At least they managed to change the battle animation when it comes to 2vs2 (or 3vs3).

The zooming effect or half 3d introduced in Gen IV was awful. What exactly do you get from seeing the pixels bigger? That plus the fact I neither like Pearl or Diamond (as characters), neither in the game nor the manga. In the manga (Adventures), these puns just annoy me by now. But Platinum Berlitz (Dawn) is cute and cool.

I guess that pretty much sums it up.

Regarding Sylveon: Bug type confirmed B-)

My favorite Pokemon game was Pokemon silver (2nd Gen). it was my first Pokemon game and I loved it, another good thing about it other then the nostalgia is the fact that the Pokemon weren't obvious they didn't look like animals from a weird Pimp my ride episode but they also didn't look like office items that had been put through the pokemaker app. I'm sure now Nintendo have reached the point where they've made a ice cream Pokemon ,that's third evo is a double scoop cone, There going to have to start to be creative again. And if the next games starters are anything to go by my wish will come true

Ice cream Pokemon (Vanillish) evo's in spoiler

we had balls with eyes for pokemon before. we literally had the entire alphabet as a pokemon.

ice cream pokemon isn't any more stupid than a dumbell or a bell for a pokemon is... both of which we've had before. we've had three pokemon based off of bells for crying out loud.
  • #119

And a rock with arms, litterally.

while i get what you're saying the bell pokemon just didn't feel as stupid as the ice cream Pokemon and i quite liked the unknowns. while they where beginning running out of ideas then, its started to feel like there out of ideas and just don't want to admit it.

I like Pokemon when they look natural like they could evolve in nature. I always thought the show would be better if they went in a different direction and made the Pokemon look more realistic. My suspension of disbelief has no problem with most Pokemon but will not let me enjoy a ice cream Pokemon I can't help but wonder how the hell it evolved to look like an ice cream cone. I know this has been said before but a lot of these new ones look like Digimon.

I pretty much agree with you, but I did like some of the weird Pokemon like unknown. He couldn't of evolved in nature but it was nice that they had a Pokemon (IE: collectable) with collectable variations. However Pokemon like unknown where good because they where crazyish Pokemon amongst normal Pokemon that made sense. And from the look of things all of the Gen 5 Pokemon are stupid household items put through a pokemaker app. Hopefully, like I said in a earlier post, Nintendo's run out of random crap to turn into Pokemon and there going to start thinking again.

I also like the Unknown. If you believe what little canon there is on the origins of Pokemon then they came to earth of a meteorite so I think something like the Unknown could evolve on another planet and I'd like to explain there shape by saying that they were the inspiration for the English alphabet but that will probable never be canon.
  • #124

several of the object based Pokemon are canonically stated to have been aliens.

The greatest pokemon ever known to the pokemon world.
  • #126

I really can't choose between all of them. I was a fan of pokemon games since i was five or six years old. Yellow was my first and I have purchased all the others and even though I enjoy the newer ones I feel like I'm cheating on the others if I pick sides. I like them all equally and sometimes I look back at the first ones just so I can be amazed with how much they have changed over the years. The tv series however is different, I can easily choose a favorite and that is when Misty was in the series. Once Misty was gone for good I watched an episode with Dawn and haven't gone back since. They ruined it for me once they took her out because Misty was a favorite for girls and she had a very likable character to her. Oh, how I miss the good old days. *Sigh*
