Intermission: Starting Over

Interesting. In the BCB chronology, the previous time we saw Jessica and Rachel would've been in chapter 47, "New Beginnings". Prior to that, they'd only appeared in a couple of chapters, and pretty much just hung out with Daisy (since they were all cheerleaders). I wonder exactly who will tell them about Daisy's friends? Certainly not Tess, that's for sure. Abbey is the only other person who's really met Jessica and Rachel at this point, although he looked slightly embarrassed when they showed up at the lunch table that first day of sophomore year. Another possibility would be Augustus, who as we know has been taking notes on everyone.

Yeah, it's a long ways to go without advancing the plot, but I imagine Taeshi must be pretty overwhelmed with work at this point. It's a lot of work to edit previous pages and come up with new pages for Volume Two, not to mention designing merchandise and creating character portraits and all that jazz. Hopefully she's not feeling too stressed out!

I'm impressed with how clean this page looks. I like the direction Teashi's art has been taking.

If we look back at chapter 51, most of Daisy's friends were fine with Jessica and Rachel joining them at the table, but Tess was clearly uncomfortable. Possibly it was only David's flirting that encouraged Rachel (and by extension, Jessica) to even consider sticking around on that first day.

According to Taeshi, Jessica and Rachel were infrequent visitors to the lunch table.

Waiting for heavy David arc that turns him into a complex character.

Yeah, that'll probably happen after the Daisy pregnancy arc. ;) Actually David could possibly be developed if Paulo stood up to him a bit more, but we aren't at that point yet.

Interesting that it was really Paulo who got Rachel to consider sticking around a little longer. But perhaps that should have been expected: according to the relationship chart, Rachel has a crush on Paulo. She certainly got her way with him later on, didn't she? Taught him a few tricks too. XD

I thought we needed clear-headed comic relief.

David's always good for comic relief, yes. But as for him being clear-headed, I have my doubts. :smirk: Occasionally he does pull astute observations from out of nowhere, though. For example, I think he's spot-on about Paulo×Daisy.

You just want to believe that.

It's too inconsistent, though. I think it's hard to create a comedic-relief and then have him/her enter the drama suddenly introspective without the turn seemingly being superficial.

Yes, David is usually silly, and I think this is precisely why his insights easily get overlooked by many readers. In "Intervention", David suggested various girls to Paulo, putting Daisy last, and we saw from Paulo's reaction that he did indeed harbour some feelings for Daisy. Then right after that, David made a great analogy with his tale of the two princesses. Altogether Taeshi spent, what, 14 pages developing that scene? Those 14 pages aren't in the story for nothing; I really do think David hit upon something important there. Sure, that scene has now been overshadowed by later events, yet Paulo's affection for Daisy still lurks beneath the surface (and it's been hinted at elsewhere too). So while Paulo may be with Jasmine for the moment, and while he may soon drift closer to his crush Lucy, I think in the end it will be Daisy upon whom he settles.

Of course it's possible that David will never really change as a person, that he'll always be that bastion of chipper immaturity even as his friends sink deeper into the drama mire. Yet in the end, even David could be dragged into the angst. One possible situation might be if Paulo were to get tired of having to continually impress his best friend, and decide to push back for a change. Facing sudden resistance and friction in his relationship with his best friend, David might actually be compelled to stop and reconsider his actions. So yes, there's also the chance that even David could grow organically as a character. And in that respect, he'd merely be following in the footsteps of Yashy, who has just now been pulled into the drama.

Also, Purin, weren't you gonna quit reading the comic for a while? Or are you just that irresistibly attracted to my posts? :P

Rachel's hit on a sore spot, and she knows it. :smirk: Sorry, Daisy, you're still infatuated with Mike, new relationship with Abbey notwithstanding. At least Abbey gives you the attention you crave, unlike a certain little grey-haired cat.

Daisy thinks Mike smells nice, and not for time first time either. She must be really into his pheromones. Either that, or Mike's wearing a dab of catnip cologne. That might explain why half the girls are into him. :smirk:

Rachel speaks the truth: Abbey is merely Daisy's second-best choice. He knows it full well too, yet still he tries to make the relationship with her work. In the end, Abbey will do whatever makes Daisy happy, even if that means letting her go so she can chase after Mike. Poor Abbey, no one deserves to be second-fiddle in a relationship like that.

Lucy may be competition now, but in four months she won't be.

Sandy will always be the real competition for anyone seeking Mike's affections! Although that's really only been the case since third grade, so Rachel exaggerates slightly.

Now that the bell has rung, I presume lunchtime is over? Run, Daisy, run; work yourself up into a hot mess. XD Change of scene next?

I notice that the About page has been redesigned. David and Abbey aren't nearly as important as the main four, while Sue gains a moral victory from being boosted into the second echelon. I especially like the image used for Abbey; it's probably my most favourite Abbey portrait ever. Some of the other characters' pictures aren't really that ideal, but I guess you gotta go with what you have.

Speaking on the current page, I now picture Daisy as a mindless robot only focused on school work the moment the bell rings, God have mercy on the poor souls that try to distract her and make her late for class.

If the school is based off of American schools (or to be more accurate to say, from what I experienced in high school), the passing period isn't substantial, like 5 minutes. If the class was further away, you could talk for a minute or two, then power walk to your destination. Being habitually late to a class could possibly lead to a student being forced to drop that specific course or the obvious detention/whatever.
  • #21

Well, five minutes is neither too little or too much time.
  • #22

Went to CG.

I never want to be away from those people again.
  • #23

Five minutes is standard and if the cafeteria is on one side of the building and her class on the other I could see Daisy having to rush, but I was more just kidding around since she left in the middle of a conversation and did not even say good bye to her friends she was talking to nor her flipin' boyfriend!

Oh dear, did I forget to post the page images? This hath now been rectified.

Rachel sure is a fan of harems, and an even bigger fan of Paulo. I agree on panel five: her eyes seem a little too wide-open.

Lucy might still be pissed off at Paulo from earlier in the day. Wonder if Jessica is starting to feel the hots for her?
  • #27

You can tell she's in love with him because she's back to being a cunt.

I'm sure those lockers are made of METAL and Lucy cracked it with Paulo's face! Either Paulo has a thick skull or Lucy is rediculously strong.

I don't think they're too wide opened, they seem to be about the same diameter of her eyes in other situations, but for that one second they were devoid of light. Nothing was there...except lust!

  • #32

Scandalous? Nah, who wouldn't like to have Paulo's face stamped onto the door of their locker? I'm certain Rachel is thinking of asking for one on hers as well. :P
Imagine it as an already established business featuring a wide array of different motives. Though, asking for a Lucy motive will probably only get the client's own face printed onto the locker (hence the wide array of existing motives).

I sees also Rachel the slut is taking Mike's relationship for being pretty romantic. Certainly she gotta be a sucker for those love stories about the two inseparable couples that are physically separated but can never let go of each other, waiting for the day they finally unites.

Paulo is not amused.
  • #34

Rachel easily sees through that ladies' man act Paulo puts up as nothing more than a mere facade. Must been experience that taught her that.

Asides from her obvious instant crush on Paulo, Rachel is also quick at conceiving a counterplay against Tess.

Paulo is not actually seeing Tess, though he might've gotten back with her if not for thoughts of Daisy. Can't blame him for still feeling conflicted regarding Tess though, they were awesome together.

Rachel really wants to get back at Tess, as does Jessica. This exchange may be where Jessica got the idea in "Back and Forth".

Lol, I love Rachel's face in the second panel. It looks like Jessica isn't fond of Paulo, either.
  • #37

I can see it out of Jessica's point of view that Paulo actually did put up quite a show on Tess' behalf at the pep rally. On top of that he was acting very defensive of her earlier the same chapter, logically spicing up any school gossips involving their relation. Between Paulo and Tess, there was never really any commitment declared, due to Tess rejecting him until her change of heart at Acapulco. Though, as pin-pointed by wacko, Paulo having thoughts of Daisy ruined that chance. Despite Paulo denies being together with Tess, isn't Jessica as easily convinced and appears to still persist with the idea in "Back and Forth" that they got something together. Of course, it could been simply good enough for Jessica to assume that Tess has feelings for Paulo, depending on him for information during that exchange wacko also did note.

Typical for Paulo, he expresses a rather one-sided rivalry against Mike. Despite Mike's popularity with girls dropped back at the freshman year because of Paulo's crusade against Mike's "unfaithfulness", he still appears to have fan-girl loyalists admiring him and possibly cheering up his reputation since that incident. It certainly rubs into Paulo's ego to hear from a girl he's barely familiar with to proclaim Mike's popularity among the girls. It's amusing to think of while Paulo puts so much effort into his behavior, Mike just simply is being himself to get the girls to fancy him, something he doesn't even strives. On top of that, there is Lucy, the girl who is the biggest reason behind Paulo's envy on Mike. It's indeed understandable in Paulo's eyes that Mike gets to have the hottest girl in his year clinging onto him but yet only to hear he doesn't appreciates her "attention", something Paulo takes Mike for being too selfish to understand. Only to push his envy even further, he finds out on the next day that Mike has rejected Lucy for his "imaginary" girlfriend Sandy, which he gets to learn is infact a successful model. Paulo sees her as even more gorgeous than Lucy! When even David comes to question Paulo's "honor" for failing to fulfill his supposed expectations and combining the factor of him being jealous on Mike's "gift" with the ladies, but being completely content with not using it. But then, based on that logic, I'm not sure what Paulo really would show to Mike by making out with any random girl he wanted. Is it just simply Paulo being too grudgefull and stubborn to realize that Mike is too naïve to even notice his rivalry? I would certainly not be surprised if I got something wrong.

Well, I feels like my wordiness on Paulo's complex got kinda off-topic and should have been made more concise and possibly less speculative. Nerveless is the point nothing more than I can see some insight on how this contributed on triggering Paulo in "Back and Forth" to make him become the most famous manwhore in the school.

In "Back and Forth", Paulo went out with Jessica and Rachel more to prove himself to David than to Mike. Though really, Paulo shouldn't feel like he has to impress his own best friend.

You are right though, Paulo is jealous of Mike. Not only that, he's insecure about himself. That's why he's always putting Mike down and creating this one-sided rivalry. And Mike doesn't like that.

I bet Rachel secretly thinks Paulo×Mike would be pretty hot. And even hotter if she could join in. Dem cat dicks.

People are being bizarre as hell in the comments thinking there's some sort of contradiction or altering of the story going on. Jessica hasn't liked Paulo since the beginning and Rachel has thought he was cute, also they've been invited to the table since the beginning so that means there would have been interaction between the three prior to Back and Forth?? It's not like Paulo was under a box before Jessica and Rachel showed up.

And Jessica doesn't even imply any scheming, just that Paulo is a brown-nosing idiot to Tess.. whereas Rachel just thinks he's cute and the statement about it being better to date him while he's still with Tess is less of a scheme and more of a "tee hee i am better than you", it probably would have influenced Jessica's later idea.

also implying paulo would be some sort of sherlock and not reject the dates of two lovely ladies because HMM MAYBE IT'S A PLOY ABOUT TESS, he was too busy feeling insecure and wanting to go on dates

  • #42

Comments by some people tends to be pretty confused, coming up with all kind of stuff. I likes myself to read different point of views, until too much far-fetched assumptions starts to appear. For me it's pretty clear that Tess' victims simply sees Paulo as her little oblivious apple-polisher, especially since that little show he did infront of everybody during that earlier mentioned pep rally. It's natural those people sees him as an idiot, especially that even his own friends considers him crude by default. Certainly there is no conspiracy going on between Rachel and Jessica, nor either of them having a plot on their own. They indeed just simply sees an opportunity they might take advantage of.

Also, clearly did Paulo at some point had some of Mike's bone by implying "HEY!! He's not that great!". As it wasn't enough with the first night at Acapulco. It's fact that Paulo had snatched some rohypnol from his depressed father and dosed Mike's drinking water. As the drug started to have effect, Paulo would proceed to rape Mike in a graceless sodomy using toothpaste as an improvised lubrication. Rachel would totally want to be there.

If you stopped to get angry over every fan that displayed the qualities of subhuman intelligence, your heart problems would be as bad as mine. No one with with the capacity to analyze even cares. It's just a matter of good art, good setting, relatable characters and the kind of love that passes into your readers through the comic. You can't pick your fans but you can embrace the ones capable of seeing your intentions through the comic.

I guess you already know all this though.

By the way, did Suitcase do this entire website on his own? I thought he did and if that's true he really deserves more gratitude than he gets from us. It really is very nice and I keep forgetting how much so until I return after being gone for a little while.
  • #44

Were you reminded to say that because of the yellow "we've kept your place!" banner?
  • #45

Nothing reminded me to say that; it was really just kind of a spur-of-the-moment observation. I didn't even know about the banner. I visit the front page sparingly and I still remember who it had been designed like its own general webcomics front page so I keep forgetting how inviting it is and convenient. I just felt that you or whoever did that deserved proper credit by way of compliment. I didn't know if you do that all on your own or with help but I really like it and I feel it warrants due credit. It only seemed like the polite thing to do.

To be honest, I haven't backread in awhile. I have my own personal reasons for it, namely that it hits kind of close to home for me emotionally which may be kind of stupid I suppose. Personally, I think that's a testament to how well its written that it could affect me so. The other reason that I don't backread is because I want the experience to be special when I finally buy the books, like I started over again from a point that the author wanted me to see. Maybe that's stupid too, but I hope it makes some kind of sense.

I promise you I'm not trying to be a kissass. I've been going out of my way to try to be more polite, appreciative and candid lately. If I appreciate something, I want whoever did it to know that the effort was neither worthless nor ignored. That's all.
  • #46

Well, thanks!

I think the book will be a great read, but so will the site. I can't wait for the day this chapter is fully posted so I can reorganize the archives, much as I did when volume one shipped. It's going to be a much more inviting thing for new readers.

I've heard that a female goldfish, when choosing between two equal males, will go to the male which already has the most females interested.

Funny that.
  • #48

When I first read Back&Forth I was kind of surprised of how Paulo approached Jessica in a way that somehow implied they already knew each other, but I just figured BCB doesn't cover everything about the characters and it's obvious they know more people than we'll ever actually see in the comic.
Thus, this intermission is filling that little gap for me rather than creating any kind of issues with the canon.

In my country they say "customer is always right", but besides carring some truth, it's just not true.
