I can see it out of Jessica's point of view that Paulo actually did put up quite a show on Tess' behalf at the
pep rally. On top of that he was acting very defensive of her earlier the same chapter, logically spicing up any school gossips involving their relation. Between Paulo and Tess, there was never really any commitment declared, due to Tess rejecting him until her change of heart at Acapulco. Though, as pin-pointed by wacko, Paulo having thoughts of Daisy ruined that chance. Despite Paulo denies being together with Tess, isn't Jessica as easily convinced and appears to still persist with the idea in "Back and Forth" that they got something
together. Of course, it could been simply good enough for Jessica to assume that Tess has feelings for Paulo, depending on him for information during that exchange wacko also did note.
Typical for Paulo, he expresses a rather one-sided rivalry against Mike. Despite Mike's popularity with girls dropped back at the freshman year because of Paulo's crusade against Mike's "
unfaithfulness", he still appears to have fan-girl loyalists admiring him and possibly cheering up his reputation since that incident. It certainly rubs into Paulo's ego to hear from a girl he's barely familiar with to proclaim Mike's popularity among the girls. It's amusing to think of while Paulo puts so much effort into his behavior, Mike just simply is being himself to get the girls to fancy him, something he doesn't even strives. On top of that, there is Lucy, the girl who is the biggest reason behind Paulo's envy on Mike. It's indeed understandable in Paulo's eyes that Mike gets to have the hottest girl in his year clinging onto him but yet only to hear he doesn't appreciates her "attention", something Paulo takes Mike for being too selfish to understand. Only to push his envy even further, he finds out on the next day that Mike has rejected Lucy for his "imaginary" girlfriend Sandy, which he gets to learn is infact a successful model. Paulo sees her as even more
gorgeous than Lucy! When even David comes to question Paulo's "
honor" for failing to fulfill his supposed expectations and combining the factor of him being jealous on Mike's "gift" with the ladies, but being completely content with not using it. But then, based on that logic, I'm not sure what Paulo really would show to Mike by making out with any random girl he wanted. Is it just simply Paulo being too grudgefull and stubborn to realize that Mike is too naïve to even notice his rivalry? I would certainly not be surprised if I got something wrong.
Well, I feels like my wordiness on Paulo's complex got kinda off-topic and should have been made more concise and possibly less speculative. Nerveless is the point nothing more than I can see some insight on how this contributed on triggering Paulo in "Back and Forth" to make him become the most famous manwhore in the school.
